GTA 6 storage comes down to one number: clear at least 212 GB of free space on your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S before pre-loading opens on November 10. PlayStation’s November 3 post asks PS5 owners to start by “clearing a minimum of 212GB of storage space”, and Rockstar says the download is up to 212 GB, depending on your console. That space has to be on storage the game can actually run from. On PS5 that means the internal SSD or an M.2 SSD; on Xbox it’s the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive works only as a parking spot for other games.
This guide is about making room. For pre-load times by region, the unlock hour and the rest of the size details, see our GTA 6 release time, pre-load and file size page.
Quick answer (official sources checked November 3, 2026, 17:00 UTC):
- Space needed: up to 212 GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S (Rockstar Newswire, Nov 3). PlayStation says to clear “a minimum of 212GB”.
- Deadline: digital pre-load starts November 10 (PS5 at local midnight, Xbox at 00:00 GMT worldwide).
- Fastest free fix: delete or move games you’re not playing. Your purchases can be downloaded again later.
- USB drives: you can store other games on them to free space, but you can’t play GTA 6 from them.
- PS5 upgrade: an M.2 SSD with a PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe interface, 250 GB to 8 TB, 5,500 MB/s read speed or faster recommended, and a heatsink.
- Xbox upgrade: a Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, which plugs into the port on the back.

An M.2 SSD needs a heatsink or heat transfer sheet, and Sony caps the total thickness at 11.25 mm. AI-generated illustration

How much storage does GTA 6 need?
Rockstar’s November 3 Newswire post, “Grand Theft Auto VI Pre-Load Begins on November 10”, gives a single maximum for both consoles: up to 212 GB. VGC reports that the pre-load file is up to 212 GB “depending on the device”, and Pure Xbox quotes Rockstar as saying the size may change “depending on your device”. Sony’s PlayStation Blog post, published the same day, puts it as a to-do: “Get ready by clearing a minimum of 212GB of storage space on your PS5.”
No day-one patch size has been announced. Our advice is to free a bit more than 212 GB so a launch update doesn’t stall your install.
How much space does your console have?
The figures below are the built-in SSD sizes Sony and Microsoft list for each console. You can’t use all of it. Sony says “a portion of the SSD is reserved for system software and other functions so the available SSD capacity may vary”, and Microsoft doesn’t list a usable figure on its console pages either. The number that matters is the free space your own console shows: Settings > Storage on PS5, or Settings > System > Storage devices on Xbox.
| Console | Built-in SSD (official) | Where GTA 6 can run from | Storage for parking other games |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (disc model) | 1 TB | Internal SSD or M.2 SSD | USB extended storage |
| PS5 Digital Edition | 825 GB | Internal SSD or M.2 SSD | USB extended storage |
| PS5 Pro | 2 TB | Internal SSD or M.2 SSD | USB extended storage |
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB (2 TB Galaxy Black Special Edition) | Internal SSD or Storage Expansion Card | USB 3.1 external drive |
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB (1 TB models also sold) | Internal SSD or Storage Expansion Card | USB 3.1 external drive |
Capacities come from PlayStation’s PS5 page, the PS5 Pro page and Xbox’s Series X and Series S spec pages, checked November 3. On a 512 GB Series S, GTA 6 takes more than 40% of the drive’s listed size before the system’s share is even counted, so that’s the console where clearing space matters most.
How to free up space for GTA 6 on PS5
Sony’s storage help page gives you three ways to make room: delete, move or customize.
- Check your free space: go to Settings > Storage.
- Delete games you’ve finished: Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select them and pick Delete. Sony says you won’t lose access, because purchases can be downloaded again from your Game Library.
- Trim big games instead of deleting them: if a game shows Customize next to its title, you can delete parts you don’t use, such as add-ons or modes you’ve finished, and keep playing the rest.
- Back up saves first: PlayStation Plus members can upload saved data under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings before deleting a game.
- Move games to USB extended storage: in Game Library, highlight a game, press Options, then pick Move Games and Apps.
Moving to USB is a good way to free up space, but there’s a catch. Sony’s USB extended storage page says PS5 games “can’t be played directly from USB extended storage”. You copy them back to the console when you want to play. GTA 6 is a PS5 game, so it has to sit on the internal SSD or an M.2 SSD. Sony’s requirements for the USB drive: SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster, 250 GB to 8 TB, plugged straight into the console (no hub), and one drive in use at a time.
Add an M.2 SSD to your PS5: the official requirements
If deleting games isn’t enough, a PS5 can take a second internal drive. These are Sony’s requirements from its M.2 SSD support page, checked November 3:
| Spec | Sony’s requirement |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCI-Express Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (Key M). M.2 SATA drives are not supported |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Sequential read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended |
| Form factor | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 |
| Size with heatsink | Up to 25 mm wide, up to 11.25 mm thick (8.0 mm above the board, 2.45 mm below) |
| Socket | Socket 3 (Key M) |
| Cooling | Required: a heatsink or heat transfer sheet, either built in or added yourself |
Sony adds a few warnings worth reading before you buy:
- It can’t guarantee every drive that meets the spec will work.
- Some games may not perform exactly as they do on the internal SSD, even on a drive faster than 5,500 MB/s.
- Heatsink sizes vary a lot, so check the drive’s dimensions against the table above. Don’t add a second heatsink to a drive that already has one.
- The PS5 doesn’t support Host Memory Buffer (HMB), so HMB drives may run slower than expected.
Size-wise, Sony’s 250 GB minimum barely fits a 212 GB game. A 1 TB or larger drive leaves room for GTA 6 plus a few other big games. That’s our judgment, not Sony’s.
The install itself takes a #1 Phillips screwdriver, and the console must be off and cooled down. On current models you take off the cover, unscrew the expansion slot cover, move the spacer to match your drive’s length, insert the drive at an angle, screw it down and put the covers back. When the console restarts, it formats the drive (this erases the drive). Sony also tells you to update the console’s system software first. Sony says installing a drive that meets the spec, following its instructions, shouldn’t affect your warranty.
To put GTA 6 straight onto the new drive, go to Settings > Storage > Installation Location before November 10. Sony says a game’s data can’t be split, so the whole 212 GB has to fit on one drive.

How to free up space for GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Support’s manage storage page puts it all in one menu:
- Press the Xbox button and go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices.
- Select your internal storage and choose View contents.
- Highlight a game, press the Menu button, then uninstall it, manage its add-ons, or move or copy it to another drive.
- For some games you can customize the installation and remove modes or features you don’t play.
Xbox saves are stored online, so if you uninstall a game, your progress comes back when you reinstall it.
USB drives work as overflow on Xbox too. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire storage primer says a USB 3.1 drive can store any Xbox game and play Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Games optimized for Xbox Series X|S can be stored there but not played. GTA 6 is Series X|S only (there’s no Xbox One version), so plan to run it from the internal SSD or an expansion card. Moving your older backward-compatible games to USB is a good way to free up the internal drive.
Storage Expansion Card for Xbox: what to know
Xbox doesn’t take standard M.2 drives. The upgrade is a Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, which plugs into the Storage Expansion port on the back of either console:
- Performance: Microsoft says the card is designed to “match the exact performance” of the internal SSD (2.4 GB/s raw I/O throughput), so games can be installed to it and played directly from it.
- Compatibility: the same card works in Series X and Series S, needs no setup, and Quick Resume works with games played from it.
- Sizes: Xbox Support lists 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB cards. Xbox Wire’s December 2025 gift guide also lists a 4 TB card from Seagate.
- Examples (not recommendations): Seagate’s cards, which Xbox Wire announced alongside the consoles and in later sizes, and the WD_BLACK C50, which Xbox Wire featured in its 2024 gift guide. Prices change often, so compare them on the maker’s or a retailer’s page on the day you buy. Look for cards sold specifically “for Xbox Series X|S”.
To install GTA 6 straight to the card, set it as the default install location under Storage devices before 00:00 GMT on November 10. That’s 7 pm ET / 4 pm PT on November 9.

FAQ
How much storage does GTA 6 take on PS5?
Up to 212 GB, according to Rockstar, and PlayStation says to clear “a minimum of 212GB”. It has to be free on the internal SSD or an M.2 SSD, not a USB drive.
Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?
Yes, if you have at least 212 GB free on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. The 512 GB Series S has the least room of any console, so check Storage devices and clear space early.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?
No. On PS5, games on USB extended storage have to be copied back before you can play them. On Xbox, USB drives can’t run games optimized for Series X|S. Use the USB drive to hold your other games instead.
What SSD do I need for GTA 6 on PS5?
Any M.2 drive that meets Sony’s spec: PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe, 250 GB to 8 TB, 5,500 MB/s read speed or faster recommended, and a heatsink that fits Sony’s size limits. A drive bigger than the minimum leaves room for more than one big game.
Can I pre-load GTA 6 to an M.2 SSD or expansion card?
Yes. Set it as your installation location before pre-loading starts on November 10, and make sure the whole game fits on that one drive.
