Stellar Blade Switch 2 reviews: what critics say

Reviews went up on Nov 2 and 3; Nintendo Life’s round-up collects them. Most critics like the port; the main debate is frame generation.

Outlet Score Verdict in brief
Nintendo Life 7/10 An easy recommendation for its combat, exploration and difficulty, though the story is a bit bland and the visuals aren’t always up to the task.
Nintendo Everything 4/5 One of this generation’s best action games. It calls the game “absolutely unplayable” with frame generation on, but says a few settings tweaks give a fantastic experience, especially handheld.
COGconnected 80/100 Competent, but not as responsive as the original. Still a worthwhile way to play on the go.
The Outerhaven 4.5/5 A properly optimized port and a good time to jump in if you have never played it.
GoNintendo No score A technical review that calls it a showcase of what skilled developers can get out of Switch 2.
Polygon (impressions) No score Some graphical blemishes, but they stop mattering in the middle of combat.

Performance: frame generation on or off?

Nintendo Life reports that the game outputs at 720p handheld and 1080p docked. It hits 60fps only with frame generation; turning that off gives what the reviewer estimates is closer to 40fps, with noticeably more responsive controls. COGconnected credits Nvidia DLSS upscaling and AMD FSR 3.1 frame interpolation for a mostly steady 60fps target in both modes. The Outerhaven reports roughly 45-60fps in handheld, depending on settings.

Is Stellar Blade on Switch 2 worth it?

Worth your time if you want this game portable or skipped it on PS5 and PC. If you already own it and play mostly on a TV, the reviews suggest this version is a compromise, not an upgrade. Our 2024 Stellar Blade review covers the core game, and the free demo is the quickest way to test frame generation for yourself.
