GTA 6’s boxed copy holds a download code, not a disc. What’s inside, the Nov 12 date, Standard-only pricing, region locks and which bonuses it gets.

The GTA 6 physical copy has no disc. Rockstar’s own store says the box holds “only” a download code, so you still download the whole game on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The box comes out on November 12, 2026, a week before launch, so you can pre-load. It’s the Standard Edition only, at $79.99 in the US, and the game unlocks on November 19.

Quick answer (Rockstar Store, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store and retailer listings checked November 2, 2026, 14:30 UTC):

  • Disc or download code? A download code. Rockstar: “A disc will not be included in the box.” No disc version has been announced.
  • What’s in the box: one code for the Standard Edition. Copies bought before November 20 also get the Vintage Vice City Pack. The free GTA+ month is only for digital pre-orders.
  • Physical release date: November 12, 2026, to support pre-loading. The game is playable from November 19.
  • Price: $79.99 (Rockstar Store, P.C. Richard), CA$109.99 (Best Buy Canada), €79.99 (Coolblue). That’s the same as the digital Standard Edition.
  • Ultimate Edition: there’s no physical version. Box owners can buy the upgrade digitally ($20 on the Microsoft Store).
  • Region lock: PlayStation codes only work on PSN accounts from the region the box was sold for.

Does GTA 6 come on a disc?

No. When pre-orders opened in June, Rockstar’s pre-order press release described the boxed game as “the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box”. The Rockstar Store is even plainer: “Physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12. A disc will not be included in the box.” The US retailer listings we checked use the same wording.

What about a disc later? Rockstar hasn’t announced one for any date. A claim that a disc edition would follow in December 2026 spread in June. A few days later, VGC reported that The Hollywood Reporter, citing a source “with knowledge of… plans”, said there were “no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after.” That isn’t an official Rockstar statement either. Officially, the code-in-box is the only physical version Rockstar has announced.

The decision upset some shops. Push Square reported in June that two independent stores in the US and Canada, Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming, refused to stock it. The major chains below all list it. It also fits a wider shift away from discs that Sony’s former boss has talked about, which we covered in Ken Kutaragi on PlayStation’s move away from discs.

What’s in the GTA 6 physical box?

Rockstar describes the contents in one line: a download code inside the box. Its store lists no disc, map or other printed extras, so don’t count on any. Target’s listing gives the format as “Download Code in Box” and the edition as “Standard”. Here’s how the box compares with buying the same edition digitally:

What you get Physical (code in box) Digital Standard (PS Store / Microsoft Store)
Game disc No No
Edition Standard only Standard or Ultimate
US price $79.99 $79.99
Vintage Vice City Pack Yes, if bought before November 20 Yes, if bought before November 20
Free month of GTA+ No (digital store pre-orders only) Yes, for pre-orders before November 20
Pre-load From November 12, after redeeming the code From November 12
Download needed Yes, the full game Yes, the full game

The bonus rules come from Rockstar’s press release: “All Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders and purchases before November 20, 2026, will include the Vintage Vice City Pack,” with “a free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders.” The Rockstar Store adds that GTA+ redemption needs a pre-order “from PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.” Boxed copies don’t get it. The store also marks its Vintage Vice City Pack offer “while supplies last.” Rockstar’s GTA VI site lists what the pack contains: a two-tone ’55 Vapid Stanier with a garage, retro outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern. For the full edition and bonus breakdown, see our GTA 6 pre-order and editions guide.

GTA 6 physical copy release date

The box comes out a week before the game. Rockstar says the physical version “will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading”. The Rockstar Store adds: “After game launch, physical orders will ship in an estimated 1–7 days.” Retailers list the same November 12 date:

Store (checked Nov 2, 14:30 UTC) Listing Price Date shown
Rockstar Store Physical (Code-in-Box), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S $79.99 Shipping from Nov 12
Target Code in Box, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Standard (not in page data) “Delivers 11/12/26, Playable 11/19/26”
P.C. Richard & Son Code in Box, PS5 $79.99 Release Date: 11/12/26
Best Buy Canada PS5 Code in Box (Xbox listing too) CA$109.99 Release Date: November 12
Coolblue (Netherlands) PS5 Code in the Box €79.99 Pre-order

Owning the box on November 12 doesn’t let you play early. The code lets you download the game, which then stays locked until your region’s unlock time on November 19. That’s midnight local time in most regions on the console stores, or 12:00 am ET (9:00 pm PT on November 18) in the US. Our GTA 6 release time and pre-load guide has every regional time and the current file-size status.

Is there a GTA 6 Ultimate Edition physical copy?

No. On the Rockstar Store, the “Physical (Code-in-Box) Version Available” option appears only under the Standard Edition, at $79.99. Target lists only a Standard edition for both consoles. The Ultimate Edition ($99.99) is digital only.

You can still get the Ultimate content with a boxed copy:

  • Xbox: the Microsoft Store sells the Ultimate Edition Upgrade for $20.00 in the US (checked November 2, 14:33 UTC).
  • PlayStation: Rockstar’s store says you can “upgrade to the Ultimate Edition on PlayStation Store at any time.” The US PlayStation Store listing showed only the full Standard and Ultimate editions when we checked, with no separate upgrade yet. The PS Store also notes that the upgrade is not eligible for the GTA+ offer.

Regional digital prices for both editions are in our GTA 6 price by region table.

Are GTA 6 physical copies region-locked?

PlayStation codes are. The Rockstar Store lists three regions for its boxes:

  • North America: boxes shipped to the US and Canada only work on PlayStation accounts registered in those two countries.
  • United Kingdom: boxes shipped to the UK only work on UK PlayStation accounts.
  • EU and rest of Europe: other Rockstar Store countries’ boxes work on PlayStation accounts in Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden or Switzerland.

The US retail listings say the same thing about PS5 copies: “Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation® registered to the US or Canada.” Rockstar’s store gives no matching rule for Xbox codes. If you’re importing a box or buying one as a gift abroad, check the listing for the recipient’s region first.

Does the physical copy work on PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S?

Yes. There’s no disc in the box, so your console doesn’t need a disc drive. You redeem the code on your account and download the game like any digital purchase. That matters more than you might think: Circana’s Mat Piscatella told VGC that, as of the end of May 2026, 52% of Xbox Series consoles and 27% of PS5s sold in the US had no disc drive. GTA 6 is only on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for now. A PC version hasn’t been announced.

Physical or digital: which GTA 6 copy should you buy?

Both get you the same game for the same US price, so the choice comes down to the extras:

  • Buy digital if you want the free GTA+ month or the Ultimate Edition on day one, or if you just want the download to start on November 12 without waiting for a delivery.
  • Buy the box if you’re giving it as a gift, paying with store credit or a retailer gift card, or you like having a case on the shelf. You still get the Vintage Vice City Pack if you buy before November 20.
  • Don’t expect resale value. Download codes are generally one-use, so once the code is redeemed the game belongs to that account, and the empty case can’t be traded in as a working copy.

Whichever you pick, free up space before November 12. Rockstar hasn’t published a download size yet, and a boxed copy downloads just as much as a digital one.

FAQ

Is GTA 6 coming out on disc in December 2026?

Not according to anything Rockstar has announced. The December disc claim was never confirmed, and The Hollywood Reporter (via VGC) reported in June that there were no plans to print discs “not at launch, and not months after.” The code-in-box is the only physical version Rockstar has announced.

Can you buy the GTA 6 physical copy before November 19?

Yes. Rockstar says the box is available from November 12, 2026, and stores list that date for delivery or release. You can redeem the code and pre-load that day, but you can’t play until November 19.

Does the GTA 6 physical copy come with the pre-order bonus?

Yes, the Vintage Vice City Pack is included if you buy before November 20, 2026. The free month of GTA+ is not: Rockstar reserves it for digital pre-orders on the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store.

Is the GTA 6 physical copy cheaper than digital?

Not at list price. It’s $79.99 at the Rockstar Store and P.C. Richard, the same as the digital Standard Edition. It’s CA$109.99 at Best Buy Canada, the same as the Canadian PlayStation Store, and €79.99 at Coolblue in the Netherlands. Retailer discounts come and go, so check the listing before you order.
