MW4 camo challenges run on one ladder per gun: eight Military camos from weapon levels, three Special camo challenges, then Gold, Platinum and Harmonic Break, then the account-wide Divergence camo that opens the Mastery camos. Activision’s official progression blog lists nine Mastery camos, three each for Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, and only six of them can be earned before Season 1. Requirements below were checked against Activision’s blog, the launch patch notes and two community trackers on October 26, 2026 (UTC).
Table of Contents
Quick answer
- Camo order: Military (8) > Special (3) > Gold > Platinum > Harmonic Break > Divergence > Mastery.
- Platinum needs Gold on every weapon in that class. Harmonic Break needs Platinum on all 33 launch weapons.
- Divergence is awarded for completing 33 Harmonic Break challenges and unlocks the first Mastery challenge.
- Mastery camos: 9 in Activision’s breakdown. Multiplayer: Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged, Orion Reforged. DMZ: Chiral, Ripple Tide, Helio. Warzone: Parallax, Damascus Reforged, Empyros (challenges classified until Season 1).
- One shared grind: Multiplayer and DMZ progress count toward the same camos, and Warzone joins in Season 1. DMZ targets are higher because AI enemies count.
- Weapon Prestige adds four Pyroclast camos. They sit outside the challenge ladder.
The full MW4 camo ladder, step by step
Every tier gates the next one, and from Platinum onward the gate stops being about one gun and starts being about your whole arsenal. Here is the ladder as Activision describes it.
| Tier | Camos | Scope | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Military | 8 per weapon | Per weapon | Reach set weapon levels. No challenge. Han 86 example: levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57, 65 |
| Special | 3 per weapon | Per weapon, then shared | Challenges that open at set weapon levels (mounted kills, suppressed kills, ADS kills and so on). Once earned, each joins a pool usable on every gun |
| Gold | 1 | Per weapon | All Military and Special camos on that gun, then 15 kills in one Multiplayer match or 100 in one DMZ match |
| Platinum | 1 | Per weapon, class-gated | Gold on every weapon in the class, then a class-specific challenge |
| Harmonic Break (animated) | 1 | Per weapon, game-gated | Platinum on all 33 weapons, then a class-specific challenge |
| Divergence | 1 | Account | Complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges |
| Mastery | 3 per mode | Mode-specific | Divergence opens Mastery 1; each Mastery challenge opens the next |
The Military unlock levels differ per weapon because they scale with each gun’s max level. The Han 86 tops out at 72, while the Sang 9mm caps at 38, so the pistol reaches its eighth Military camo far sooner. You can see the exact levels for any gun in its Gunsmith Progression tab. Our MW4 Prestige guide covers how weapon levels interact with player Prestige.
Special camo challenges: how they work
Each weapon has three Special camos unique to it. Their challenges open at set weapon levels and ask for a specific kind of kill. The challenge text adjusts to the mode you’re playing, and finishing it in either mode unlocks the camo everywhere. Two official examples show the pattern:
| Weapon | Special camo | Opens at weapon level | Multiplayer | DMZ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Han 86 | Smoke | 25 | 20 mounted kills | 75 mounted kills |
| Han 86 | Stormwave | 46 | 50 suppressed kills | 125 suppressed kills |
| Han 86 | Red | 72 (max) | 3 kills without dying | 3 kills without taking damage, 50 times |
| Sang 9mm | Autumn | 13 | 25 ADS kills | 75 ADS kills |
| Sang 9mm | Snakeskin | 25 | 3 kills without dying, 5 times | 3 kills without taking damage, 15 times |
| Sang 9mm | Space Time | 38 (max) | 50 Akimbo kills | 125 Akimbo kills |
Note the trade-off in that table: DMZ asks for roughly 2.5 to 4 times the kill count, but AI enemies count. Whether DMZ is faster for you depends on how quickly you clear AI compared with how many player kills you get per Multiplayer match. Activision’s blog doesn’t print the Multiplayer target for the Han 86’s Red camo as a repeat count, so check the in-game text for that one.
Gold camo requirements
Gold is the same challenge on almost every gun: 15 kills in a single Multiplayer match, or 100 enemy kills in a single DMZ match. CODMunity’s tracker lists a lower DMZ target for launchers (50 kills in a match). Small, busy maps make the 15-kill version much easier; our MW4 maps list has every launch map plus the Shipment date.
MW4 camo challenges by class: Platinum and Harmonic Break
Activision’s blog names the challenge type per class; the counts come from CODMunity’s MW4 camo guide, which lists every weapon’s text. The launch update on October 23 fixed “an issue where several camo unlock requirements were inaccurate,” according to the MW4 launch patch notes, so treat the in-game text as final if a number differs.
| Class (weapons) | Platinum challenge (MP / DMZ) | Harmonic Break challenge (MP / DMZ) |
|---|---|---|
| Assault rifles (8) | Headshots: 50 / 100 | Double kills: 25 / 50 |
| SMGs (5) | Kills from behind: 25 / 75 | Hipfire kills: 50 / 100 |
| Shotguns (2) | Hipfire kills: 50 / 125 | 2 kills without reloading: 25 / 50 times |
| LMGs (3) | 3 kills without dying: 15 times / 3 kills without taking damage: 50 times | 2 kills without releasing the trigger: 25 / 75 times |
| Marksman rifles (3) | Prone kills: 75 / 150 | One-shot kills: 75 / 150 |
| Sniper rifles (3) | Prone kills: 75 / 150-200 | One-shot kills: 75 / 150-200 |
| Pistols (4) | Kills from behind: 20 / 75 | Hipfire kills: 40 / 100 |
| Launchers (4) | 2 kills without taking damage: 15 / 50 times | 10 kills in a match: 7 / 15 times |
| Melee (1) | 3 kills without dying: 15 times / 3 kills without taking damage: 50 times | Kills from behind: 25 / 75 |

Two discrepancies worth knowing. Activision describes the launcher Harmonic Break challenge simply as “Get Player Kills,” while CODMunity lists the much harder “10 kills in a match” repeat, and the sniper DMZ targets vary by gun (150 or 200) in CODMunity’s data. The Platinum text for the Han 86 matches across both sources: 50 headshots in Multiplayer or 100 in DMZ.
Every weapon that counts toward Platinum and Harmonic Break
Platinum is tracked per class, so this is your checklist. The right-hand column matters: you can’t finish a class until you own its last gun, and some arrive near the level cap. Unlock levels are from Activision’s launch weapons blog.
| Class | Weapons | Last gun unlocks at |
|---|---|---|
| Assault rifles | Han 86, M4, Hyeon Burst, Patriot XMR, Kastov 762, Oden, Axion, Cronen Squall | Level 55 (Cronen Squall) |
| SMGs | ISO Nightshade, VEL 46, Wz.55 Striga, PPSh-41, X-58 Nyx | Level 46 (X-58 Nyx) |
| Shotguns | Rezi 12, Warlord | Level 32 (Warlord) |
| LMGs | Finn LMG, Type 73, APOC-338 | Level 44 (APOC-338) |
| Marksman rifles | MAR-9, Oris 8.6, Mosin-Nagant | Level 36 (Mosin-Nagant) |
| Sniper rifles | KG-7 Vulcan, Astaroth .57, Signal 50 | Level 50 (Signal 50) |
| Pistols | Sang 9mm, Krait P68, .50 GS, Mojave .357 | Level 48 (Mojave .357) |
| Launchers | PILA, RPG-8, JOKR, PM-40 Anvil | Level 54 (PM-40 Anvil) |
| Melee | FSS Carbon Edge 1095 knife | Level 4 |

All MW4 mastery camos and their challenges
Once Divergence is unlocked, the grind splits by mode. Each mode’s three Mastery camos unlock in order, and the requirements below are Activision’s own wording.

Mercurial Drift, the first Multiplayer Mastery camo: 10 kills in a match, 250 times. Image: Activision
| Mode | Mastery camo | Challenge |
|---|---|---|
| Multiplayer | 1. Mercurial Drift | 10 kills in a match, 250 times |
| Multiplayer | 2. Polyatomic Reforged | 3 kills without taking damage, 300 times |
| Multiplayer | 3. Orion Reforged | 5 kills without dying, 500 times |
| DMZ | 1. Chiral | 2,500 Tier 3+ enemy kills |
| DMZ | 2. Ripple Tide | Exfil 2 LT dog tags in a single deployment, 50 times |
| DMZ | 3. Helio | 25,000 kills with Legendary weapons on a max-level Operator |
| Warzone | 1. Parallax | Classified until Season 1 |
| Warzone | 2. Damascus Reforged | Classified until Season 1 |
| Warzone | 3. Empyros | Classified until Season 1 |
The DMZ path rewards a different player than the Multiplayer path. Chiral and Helio are volume grinds against AI, while Ripple Tide hinges on extracting with two LT dog tags in one deployment, which suits squads that already hunt DMZ’s tougher targets. The Multiplayer path is pure performance: Orion Reforged’s 500 five-kill streaks without dying is the longest single requirement on the list.

How many mastery camos are in MW4? Why the counts differ
Sources disagree, so here is where each number comes from:
- 9: Activision’s blog (three per mode, including Warzone). AllThingsHow uses the same count and the same names.
- 6: CODMunity’s mastery tracker lists only the Multiplayer and DMZ camos, because those are the only ones earnable before Season 1.
- Higher counts, such as 12: check what’s being counted. Activision files Divergence under Completionist camos and the four Pyroclast camos under Weapon Prestige. Neither set is a Mastery camo in the official breakdown.
There is also a disagreement on scope. CODMunity treats Divergence and each Mastery camo as account-wide (one challenge unlocks the camo for every weapon). AllThingsHow describes the Mastery camos as unlocking class by class. Activision’s text (“awarded for completing 33 Harmonic Break Challenges”) fits the account-wide reading but doesn’t say so outright, so we’ll update this guide once Activision clarifies.
Pyroclast Weapon Prestige camos
Weapon Prestige is optional and starts once a gun hits max level. It resets the weapon level (blueprint attachments and Apex Attachments stay, and camos are kept) and pays out four stages of the evolving Pyroclast camo:
| Camo | Unlock (Activision) |
|---|---|
| Pyroclast | Weapon Prestige 1, level 1 |
| Pyroclast Terminus | Weapon Prestige 1, max level |
| Pyroclast Scatter | Weapon Prestige Master level 150 |
| Pyroclast Cascade | Weapon Prestige Master level 250 |
CODMunity lists Pyroclast Scatter at level 160 rather than 150, and AllThingsHow also calls the second stage “Pyroclast Verge.” Activision’s blog says 150 and Terminus.
Fastest order for the MW4 camo grind
These follow from the rules above rather than from any secret method:
- Start Platinum with shotguns. Two guns, both owned by level 32. Marksman rifles (three guns, all by level 36) come next.
- Leave assault rifles and launchers for last. Their Platinum can’t start until levels 55 and 54. Level the early guns in those classes meanwhile so they’re at Gold when the last one unlocks.
- Stack Special challenges with leveling. A challenge only opens at its weapon level, so read all three on a new gun and build a class that hits them (a suppressor for Stormwave, Akimbo for Space Time).
- Use Double Weapon XP tokens while leveling. Activision recommends them for the weapon-level grind, and Military camos are the only tier that depends on weapon level alone.
- Pick a Mastery path, not both. Multiplayer and DMZ Mastery are separate tracks with no overlap, and the Warzone set adds a third in Season 1.
Weapon choice matters too: the guns that already win gunfights get to Gold fastest. Our MW4 best loadouts and MW4 perks list cover the current meta. For the pre-order camos that work on MW4 weapons (Moonlit Pearl and Gilded Ruin), see our MW4 carry-forward guide.
FAQ
How many camos are in MW4?
Each weapon has 14 ladder camos: 8 Military, 3 Special, Gold, Platinum and Harmonic Break. On top of that come Divergence, 9 Mastery camos (3 per mode) and 4 Pyroclast Weapon Prestige camos.
Does DMZ count for MW4 camos?
Yes. Camo progress is shared between Multiplayer and DMZ, and Warzone joins in Season 1. DMZ challenges need more kills because AI enemies count.
How do you unlock mastery camos in MW4?
Get Harmonic Break on all 33 weapons to earn Divergence. That opens Mastery 1 in each mode (Mercurial Drift in Multiplayer, Chiral in DMZ); each Mastery challenge then opens the next.
When can you earn the Warzone mastery camos?
Not yet. Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros are listed, but Activision says their challenges will be revealed in Season 1.
