All 18 Modern Warfare 4 perks by slot with unlock levels and official effects, why there are no Wildcards, and suggested Pick 3 perk sets for each playstyle.

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 18 multiplayer perks in a Pick 3 system: you equip exactly one perk from each of three slots, and each slot holds six perks. Six of them are ready the moment Create-a-Class opens at Player Level 4, and the last one, Kill Chain, unlocks at Level 48. Below is the full MW4 perks list with Activision’s launch slot, unlock level and official description for every perk, then suggested perk sets built from what each one officially does. Checked October 23, 2026 UTC against the launch patch notes.

Quick answer

  • 18 perks, 3 slots, 6 per slot. Pick 3 means one perk from Perk 1, one from Perk 2 and one from Perk 3. Nothing lets you stack two from the same slot.
  • No Wildcards at launch. Activision’s Create-a-Class breakdown lists no Wildcard slot. Overkill, a Wildcard in Black Ops 6, is an ordinary Perk 1 option in MW4.
  • Tactical Sprint is a perk now. It lives only on Blood Rush (Perk 2, Level 4).
  • The hardest choice is Perk 2: Hardline (cheaper killstreaks), Blood Rush (Tactical Sprint), Fast Hands (faster reloads and swaps) and Ninja (quiet footsteps) all compete for it.
  • Stealth core: Ghost (Perk 1, Level 24) hides you from UAVs, Portable Radars, Heartbeat Sensors and callouts. Cold-Blooded (Perk 3, Level 36) covers AI targeting, thermals and drones.

Slots and descriptions come from Activision’s Ready for Launch: Weapons Detail post (October 19). The launch patch notes give the same slot placement. The description column quotes Activision’s in-game wording.

Perk 1 (6 perks)

Perk Unlock Official description
Quick Fix Level 4 “Killing players and capturing or holding objectives immediately triggers health regeneration.”
Overkill Level 4 “Carry two primary weapons.”
High Alert Level 8 “Vision pulses when spotted by an enemy player outside of view.”
Ghost Level 24 “Undetectable by Enemy Callouts, UAVs, Portable Radars, and Heartbeat Sensors.”
Resupply Level 31 “Equipment recharges over time and maximum capacity is increased by 1. Field Upgrade earn rate increased.”
Kill Chain Level 48 “Kills from Killstreaks and award half streak points.”

Perk 2 (6 perks)

Perk Unlock Official description
Hardline Level 4 “Reduce Killstreak cost by 1.”
Blood Rush Level 4 “Enables Tactical Sprint for a burst of speed. Kills replenish your stamina.”
Bomb Squad Level 16 “Take reduced damage from non-Killstreak explosives. Reset fuse timers when picking up live grenades. Immune to Knockdown.”
Fast Hands Level 20 “Reload, use equipment, and swap weapons faster.”
Ninja Level 30 “Your footsteps are quieter, with significantly reduced range.”
Birdseye Level 40 “Zoomed out minimap. UAV and Radar pings reveal the enemy’s direction.”

Perk 3 (6 perks)

Perk Unlock Official description
Lethal Reach Level 4 “Throw equipment farther with a visible trajectory. Automatically use your dedicated melee attack when you perform a weapon butt.”
Combat Grid Level 4 “Spot enemy Equipment, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks, and vehicles through walls. Friendly players are also highlighted.”
Battle Hardened Level 12 “Reduce the effect of enemy Tacticals.”
Scavenger Level 28 “Enemies drop a retrievable ammo cache on death. Launcher ammo is not included.”
Tracker Level 32 “Enemies leave behind a footprint trail and their Death markers become visible. Kill markers are hidden.”
Cold-Blooded Level 36 “Undetectable by AI Targeting Systems, Thermal Optics, Recon Drones, Spotter Scopes, Snapshot Grenades, and High Alert.”

Kill Chain’s description is printed exactly as Activision wrote it, and the sentence is missing a word. Read literally, kills from your killstreaks count for half credit toward your next streak, which is how most killstreak games have used the name. Check the tooltip in your Create-a-Class menu before you build around it.

What changed from the beta

Infinity Ward says in the launch patch notes that it “reconfigured our Perk distribution” after the beta to balance speed, durability, utility and stealth across the three slots. Some guide wikis still show older placements, so trust the table above or your in-game menu. The launch changes Activision lists:

  • Blood Rush moved to the second tier. Tactical Sprint stays off by default and only Blood Rush grants it. Because the perk now costs you a Perk 2 slot, the extra sprint-out penalty that Tactical Sprint usually carries was removed.
  • Blood Rush input: with the perk equipped, pressing sprint triggers Tactical Sprint by default (“single tap run”). “Double tap” and “single tap sprint” are still in the Movement Advanced Settings.
  • Battle Hardened buff: it now negates most of the effect of Flash, Concussion and Screamer Mine tacticals more effectively.
  • Resupply buff: your first recharge arrives faster.

Does MW4 have Wildcards? Pick 3 and Overkill explained

No. Activision’s launch Create-a-Class breakdown covers Operators, weapons, Gunsmith, Tacticals, Lethals, Field Upgrades, killstreaks and perks, and none of those sections mentions Wildcards. The beta weekend two guide describes the Pick 3 Perk System as “equipping one Perk from each of three Perk slots”. That gives you three perks per loadout with no slot bending.

That matters for two Wildcard staples from recent Call of Duty games:

  • Overkill is a Perk 1 perk. Activision’s weapons overview says to equip it “if you plan to use another Primary Weapon in your loadout, taking the place of your Secondary Weapon.” It costs you Ghost, Quick Fix and the other Perk 1 options. One launch attachment is built around it: the VEL 46 Snap Apex sling “allows Quick Draw when used with Overkill” and blocks the stock.
  • Perk Greed (a fourth perk) and similar slot-bending options have no equivalent, so every loadout gets exactly three perks.

Perks, killstreaks and Operators are all set per loadout in MW4. Activision’s beta guides allowed up to 12 custom loadouts, each with its own perk set. Our MW4 killstreaks list covers the streak side of each class, including how Hardline changes every kill cost.

Perk unlock order by level

Create-a-Class opens at Level 4 and the main Player Level cap is 55. Here is every perk in the order it unlocks, so you can see where your next pick comes from.

Level Perk unlocked Slot
4 Quick Fix, Overkill Perk 1
4 Hardline, Blood Rush Perk 2
4 Lethal Reach, Combat Grid Perk 3
8 High Alert Perk 1
12 Battle Hardened Perk 3
16 Bomb Squad Perk 2
20 Fast Hands Perk 2
24 Ghost Perk 1
28 Scavenger Perk 3
30 Ninja Perk 2
31 Resupply Perk 1
32 Tracker Perk 3
36 Cold-Blooded Perk 3
40 Birdseye Perk 2
48 Kill Chain Perk 1

Perk unlocks stop at Level 48, but levelling continues past it. See how MW4 Prestige works for what you get after Level 55.

Best MW4 perks: suggested perk sets

No balance data exists yet, since the game only launched today. These combinations follow from Activision’s descriptions and the launch tuning notes. They are starting points, not a verified meta. A launch guide on games.gg (updated October 20) also rates Ghost, Fast Hands and Hardline highly, which agrees with the sets below.

Build Perk 1 Perk 2 Perk 3 Why it fits
Stealth flanker Ghost Ninja Cold-Blooded Hidden from UAVs, radars, heartbeat sensors, thermals, drones and High Alert, and your footsteps are quieter. You give up Fast Hands and Tactical Sprint.
Objective slayer Quick Fix Blood Rush Battle Hardened Health regen on kills and on capturing or holding objectives, Tactical Sprint between points, and less effect from the flashes and stuns thrown at objectives.
Killstreak farmer Ghost or Kill Chain Hardline Combat Grid Every streak costs one kill less, and you see enemy streaks and equipment through walls. Objective play also fills the meter at launch.
Two primaries Overkill Fast Hands Lethal Reach Fast Hands speeds up the weapon swaps that a two-primary class relies on. Pair it with the VEL 46 Snap for Quick Draw.
Equipment spam Resupply Bomb Squad Lethal Reach Equipment recharges with +1 capacity, you take less damage from non-killstreak explosives, and you throw farther with a visible arc.
Hunter High Alert Birdseye Tracker You get warned when you’re spotted, UAV pings show which way enemies face, and enemies leave footprint trails.

Best perk in each slot

  • Perk 1: Ghost for most players once it unlocks at Level 24, because it hides you from UAVs, Portable Radars, Heartbeat Sensors and enemy callouts in one slot. Before then, Quick Fix is the strongest early pick for objective modes. Its regen triggers on captures and holds, not just kills.
  • Perk 2: it depends on your class. Pick Fast Hands for snipers and anyone who swaps weapons often. Hardline suits streak-focused classes: the patch notes put the UAV at 5 kills, or 4 with Hardline. Blood Rush is the only way to Tactical Sprint, and the patch notes removed its usual sprint-out penalty. Ninja is the pick for flanking SMG classes.
  • Perk 3: Cold-Blooded to stay hidden, with Battle Hardened as the alternative after its launch buff against Flash, Concussion and Screamer Mines. Combat Grid is the strongest of the Level 4 options.

Which perk counters what

The descriptions spell out the counters, which helps when a lobby is full of UAVs or heartbeat sensors:

Threat Perk that counters it Slot
UAV, Portable Radar, Heartbeat Sensor, enemy callouts Ghost Perk 1
AI targeting (streaks), thermal optics, Recon Drones, Spotter Scopes, Snapshot Grenades Cold-Blooded Perk 3
Enemy High Alert Cold-Blooded Perk 3
Footstep audio Ninja Perk 2
Flash, Concussion, Screamer Mine and other Tacticals Battle Hardened Perk 3
Grenades, C4 and other non-killstreak explosives, knockdown Bomb Squad Perk 2
Hidden enemy equipment, Field Upgrades and streaks Combat Grid (reveals them) Perk 3

Ghost and Cold-Blooded sit in different slots, so you can run both. Ninja and Fast Hands share Perk 2, which makes it the slot where stealth costs you the most. If you play on PC, our MW4 best settings guide covers the audio and visibility options that decide how much footstep and visual information you get in the first place. FAQ

How many perks are in MW4?

18 multiplayer perks at launch, six in each of the three slots, according to Activision’s launch breakdown.

Does Modern Warfare 4 have Wildcards?

Not at launch. MW4 uses Pick 3, with one perk per slot. Overkill is a Perk 1 perk instead of a Wildcard.

How do you get Tactical Sprint in MW4?

Equip Blood Rush (Perk 2, unlocked at Level 4). Without it you can’t Tactical Sprint. With it, a single press of sprint triggers Tactical Sprint by default.

What level does Ghost unlock in MW4?

Player Level 24. It’s a Perk 1 perk, so it competes with Quick Fix, Overkill, High Alert, Resupply and Kill Chain.

What does Hardline do in MW4?

It cuts every killstreak’s cost by one kill. According to the launch patch notes, that makes the UAV 4 kills instead of 5.
