Activision’s launch list for MW4 on Oct 23: 33 Operators, 24 primaries, 8 secondaries, 17 Killstreaks, 18 Perks, plus new Apex Attachments and Gunny.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 with 33 Operators and 33 weapons, plus 9 Tactical items, 11 Lethals, 12 Field Upgrades, 17 Killstreaks and 18 Perks, according to a full launch breakdown Activision published on the official Call of Duty blog on October 19. The post also confirms the biggest Create-a-Class changes: one Operator per loadout, Killstreaks attached to each loadout, and attachments you only ever unlock once.

Modern Warfare 4 weapons and equipment at launch

Here is the full launch count by category, as listed by Activision. The weapons are shared across Multiplayer and DMZ; the equipment counts are for Multiplayer, and Activision says DMZ has a different set to discover.

Category Count at launch Breakdown
Operators 33 Usable in Multiplayer and DMZ
Primary weapons 24 8 assault rifles, 5 SMGs, 2 shotguns, 3 LMGs, 3 marksman rifles, 3 sniper rifles
Secondary weapons 8 4 pistols, 4 launchers
Melee 1 FSS Carbon Edge 1095 knife
Tacticals 9 Includes Flash, Smoke, Snapshot, Heartbeat Sensor, Stim
Lethals 11 Includes Frag, Sticky Grenade, Drill Charge, Zip Gun, C4
Field Upgrades 12 Includes DDOS, Trophy System, Riot Shield, Tactical Insertion
Killstreaks 17 From the 4-kill UAV to the 12-kill Gunship and Air Lockdown
Perks 18 Pick 3 system, 6 per category

How the 33 Operators unlock

Only five Operators are available immediately. The rest are split across editions and challenges:

  • Editions: Hunter Killer comes with a Digital Standard or Vault Edition pre-order, and eight more, including Price, Ghost, Valeria and Blix, come with the Vault Edition.
  • Campaign: eight Operators, such as Park, Cho and Dallas, unlock by finishing specific story missions.
  • DMZ: four unlock at DMZ Player Levels 4, 9, 15 and 19.
  • Multiplayer: five unlock through challenges, such as 50 headshot kills for Zimo.
  • Other: Kyle comes with the Call of Duty Endowment Valor Pack, which Activision says arrives in Warzone Season 1, and one Operator, Ju Kwon, is listed as “[CLASSIFIED]”.

If you are still deciding on an edition, our MW4 early access and editions guide covers what each one costs, and the campaign length and missions guide shows how far into the story those mission unlocks sit.

What changes in Create-a-Class

Create-a-Class opens at Player Level 4; before that, players pick from premade loadouts. The weapon unlock tables run up to Player Level 55. The main changes, according to the blog:

  • Operators per loadout: each loadout can now carry its own Operator, picked at the top of the loadout screen.
  • Killstreaks per loadout: every loadout has its own attached Killstreaks. Kills remain the main driver, but objective play also counts toward them.
  • Attachments unlock once: an attachment unlocked on one gun is available on every weapon that can use it. When a weapon level would award an attachment you already own, you skip that level with a Bonus Level Up.
  • Apex Attachments: new to MW4, each supported weapon earns a unique Apex Attachment at max level. It doesn’t use one of the regular slots and changes how the gun works; the Oden becomes a semi-auto sniper, and the Wz.55 Striga goes akimbo.
  • Gunny: an attachment optimizer in Create-a-Class and the DMZ Gunsmith that suggests close-range, balanced or long-range builds from the attachments you have already unlocked.
  • Perks: a return to a streamlined Pick 3 system, with Overkill needed for a second primary weapon.

One caution for anyone planning an unlock path: the blog’s summary tables and its weapon-by-weapon entries give different unlock levels for six guns (the VEL 46, Wz.55 Striga, PPSh-41, X-58 Nyx, Astaroth .57 and Signal 50). The in-game Progression menu should settle it on launch day. Activision also published a separate progression and prestige breakdown.

When you can use it

Multiplayer, and with it the full Create-a-Class system, arrives with the full game on October 23. Digital pre-order owners have been playing the campaign since October 16, and DMZ Early Access opens for them on October 20. Physical pre-orders don’t qualify. Activision says Warzone integration for MW4 weapons comes in Season 1 “later this year.” The campaign is already drawing strong reactions, from early critic reviews to a 92% positive Steam rating, and DMZ got a high-profile showcase this week in the MrBeast DMZ video.

What’s next

Apex Attachments only unlock at max weapon level, so launch week will show how quickly players reach them and whether any dominate. We will follow up once the in-game Progression menu confirms the disputed unlock levels.
