Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23 with 20 multiplayer maps: 12 core 6v6 maps, three 32v32 Ground War maps, four 2v2 Gunfight maps and Kill Block, a modular arena that rebuilds itself between rounds. Shipment is the 21st, and it arrives as a free post-launch 6v6 map on Tuesday, October 27.
This MW4 maps list covers every map by mode, where each one is set, which modes they run, and what has been officially dated for the week after launch. Map names and descriptions come from Activision’s Ready for Launch maps and modes post and the MW4 launch patch notes (checked October 24, 06:50 UTC).

MW4 core 6v6 maps
The 12 core maps run the standard respawn and round-based playlists, from Team Deathmatch and Hardpoint to Search & Destroy and the new Collateral mode. Activision’s blog links an interactive Tac-Map for each one, which is the quickest way to learn lanes before you load in.
The settings lean heavily on Korea, matching the campaign and DMZ. Lotus, Nautical, Reactor U92 and Silkworm are all South Korean locations, and Munition is a North Korean base. The rest are spread across France (Cachette), Mexico (Lithium), India (Mumbai and Transit 213), New York (Rooftops) and Russia (Coal and Sentry).
One small catch if you read the official blog: its text entry for Coal repeats Cachette’s description word for word. Activision’s own map card for Coal, shown above, gives the real setting: the remains of a Soviet coal processing plant in a remote mountain area, with a fallen smokestack, ore chutes and a slurry-filled river.
Smaller maps suit fast modes, and that’s where your loadout matters most. Our MW4 perks list and MW4 killstreaks guide cover which picks pay off on tight lanes like Rooftops and Silkworm.
When does Shipment come out in MW4?
Shipment arrives on Tuesday, October 27. Activision lists it as a post-launch 6v6 map “arriving shortly after launch on October 27”. No start time has been announced yet (checked October 24, 06:50 UTC).
The new version is set on a Russian harbor, boxed in between the water and concrete panel apartment blocks. Activision says the layout stays “true to form” with the classic design, updated with Modern Warfare 4’s visuals and movement. It’s the only post-launch map date Activision has confirmed in writing so far. Our MW4 Season 1 roadmap tracks the rest of the post-launch dates.
MW4 Ground War maps (32v32)
Three large maps carry Ground War, and all of them sit in or next to Hajin, the Korean exclusion zone you explore in DMZ. If you’ve already learned Hajin’s points of interest from our MW4 DMZ beginner guide, some of that knowledge carries over.
- Imjin Farmland: open fields, waterways, scattered farms and a large mill. Activision describes it as built for long sightlines and vehicle play.
- Wolves Stadium: dense downtown Hajin with multi-story buildings, transit lines, tunnels and rooftops around the stadium.
- Forest: a wooded hillside between the other two, with a guard tower at the top, a gas station and barracks as key objectives.
Ground War’s new mode is Combat Outpost, a 20-minute, 1,500-point take on Domination. Capturing an outpost adds a spawn point for your team. Reinforcing it unlocks team rewards, from a local UAV and a JLTV airdrop up to a Light Tank delivered to your headquarters.

MW4 Gunfight maps and Kill Block
The four 2v2 Gunfight maps are compact arenas built around a central feature:
- Cafe: a Paris courtyard where a fountain blocks the middle. A statue on top gives the high ground, and the edges offer longer sightlines with little cover.
- Library: bookshelves to hide behind and a center walkway with views over both halves.
- NYC: a winter concert stage surrounded by stands and vendor stalls, with scattered vantage points.
- Smuggler: train cars you can fight in, around and on top of, with warehouses on either side for close-range fights.
Gunfight rounds last 50 seconds and the first side to six round wins takes the match. Everyone gets the same loadout, which changes every two rounds, and an Overtime flag decides stalled rounds.
What is Kill Block in MW4?
Kill Block is the Westbridge Training Facility, a modular live-fire range that reconfigures between rounds. Activision says it has more than 500 layout combinations. Some sections are new, while others borrow from classic Modern Warfare maps: Crash, Highrise and Shoot House, placed at random each match.
At launch Kill Block supports 3v3 and 10v10 Gunfight. The launch patch notes add two promises: 6v6 modes are coming to Kill Block after launch, and so are new “Slabs” (sections) and configurations. No date has been given for either.

Which modes are in MW4 multiplayer?
Activision lists over a dozen modes at launch, most with Hardcore variants. Hardcore means a limited HUD, friendly fire and reduced health with no regeneration. Here are the official match settings:
| Mode | Type | Match time | Score limit | Hardcore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Inflation (new) | Respawn | 10 min | Most cash wins | Yes |
| Hijack (new) | Respawn | 4 min per round | 300 | Yes |
| Frontline | Respawn | 10 min | 100 | No |
| Team Deathmatch | Respawn | 10 min | 100 | Yes |
| Domination | Respawn | Unlimited | 200 | Yes |
| Hardpoint | Respawn | 5 min | 250 | Yes |
| Kill Confirmed | Respawn | 10 min | 75 | Yes |
| Free-For-All | Respawn | 10 min | 30 | Yes |
| Collateral (new) | Round-based | 2 min per round | 6 rounds | No |
| Search & Destroy | Round-based | 2 min per round | 6 rounds | Yes |
| Gunfight | Round-based | 50 sec per round | 6 rounds | No |
| Combat Outpost (new) | Ground War | 20 min | 1,500 | No |
| Gun Game | Party | 10 min | 15 weapons | No |
The four new modes in short:
- Inflation: kills drop cash. Carry enough and you become a High Value Target whose position is revealed to everyone. Overtime in the final minutes raises the cash multipliers, and the team with the most money wins.
- Hijack: carry, throw or pass a Data Spike to the enemy Comm Station, plant it to score over time, and defend the upload for a bonus. Teams swap sides each round.
- Collateral: Search & Destroy with a buy phase. Everyone starts with a pistol and $800, earns cash for kills and objectives, and buys gear between rounds. Teams can pool money for a UAV. You lose your gear when you die but keep your cash.
- Combat Outpost: Ground War’s Domination variant, covered above.
There’s also the Proving Grounds Mobility Course, a training area with movement tutorials and timed courses you can S-rank. It is worth a run before your first match, and our MW4 best settings guide covers the movement and controller options to set first.
When do Possession and Infected come to MW4?
Activision’s patch notes say Infected and the new Possession mode are “dropping next week as a Halloween treat”, meaning the week of October 26. Inven Global read the exact days from Activision’s October 14 roadmap graphic: Possession on October 29 and Infected on October 30. Activision hasn’t repeated those days in text.
- Possession (new): killing an enemy moves you into their body and gives you their loadout, wherever they were standing. Activision warns you’ll always possess whoever you eliminate, so a kill can drop you somewhere bad.
- Infected (returning): one random player starts Infected, and every Survivor they kill joins the horde.
These two party modes are as close as MW4 gets to a Halloween zombie mode. Our explainer on whether MW4 has Zombies covers the rest.
