The best MW4 loadouts on launch weekend are built around four guns: the Han 86 and M4 assault rifles and the VEL 46 and ISO Nightshade SMGs. Every major meta tracker we checked puts them at or near the top. The Han 86 leads three of the four rankings, and you have it from the moment Create-a-Class opens at Player Level 4. Below you’ll find how each tracker ranks the guns, two competing builds per weapon with the unlock level of every attachment, and perk sets that fit MW4’s launch perk slots. Rankings and builds were checked on October 24, 2026 at 10:50 UTC. Infinity Ward says weapon tuning could arrive as soon as next week.
Table of Contents
Quick answer
- Best overall: Han 86. It’s S tier on Dexerto, #1 on WZStats and WarzoneLoadout, and has a 36.6% pick rate on CODMunity, more than double any other gun. It unlocks at Level 4.
- Best SMG: VEL 46 or ISO Nightshade. Both are S tier on Dexerto. WarzoneLoadout ranks the VEL 46 higher, and WZStats ranks the ISO higher. The ISO unlocks at Level 4.
- Best second AR: M4 (Level 14), with the Kastov 762 (Level 34) as the hard-hitting option for players who can handle its recoil.
- Best sniper: KG-7 Vulcan. It’s the only sniper above B tier on Dexerto, and you have it from Level 4.
- Perks: one per slot. Ninja, Fast Hands, Bomb Squad and Blood Rush all compete for Perk 2, so some guides’ “meta” perk lists can’t be equipped together.
Our full MW4 weapons and Operators list covers all 33 launch weapons. This guide covers only the ones worth building first.
MW4 meta guns: how four trackers rank them
Each source measures something different. Dexerto’s tier list (updated October 23) is an editorial ranking. WZStats (updated October 24) and WarzoneLoadout (updated October 23) publish their own ranked meta lists. CODMunity shows a pick rate for each gun across the loadouts it tracks. Where all four agree, the pick is safe. Where they split, you’re making a playstyle choice.
| Gun | Class | Unlocks at | Dexerto | WZStats | WarzoneLoadout | CODMunity pick rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Han 86 | Assault rifle | Level 4 | S | Meta, #1 AR | #1 | 36.6% |
| VEL 46 | SMG | Level 5 or 13* | S | Meta, #2 SMG | #2 | 17.6% |
| M4 | Assault rifle | Level 14 | S | Meta, #2 AR | #4 | 16.5% |
| ISO Nightshade | SMG | Level 4 | S | Meta, #1 SMG | #5 | 7.1% |
| KG-7 Vulcan | Sniper rifle | Level 4 | A | A, #1 sniper | #3 | 5.1% |
| Kastov 762 | Assault rifle | Level 34 | S | Meta, #3 AR | #9 | 3.8% |
| X-58 Nyx | SMG | Level 34 or 46* | A | Meta, #3 SMG | #6 | 1.1% |
| Mosin-Nagant | Marksman rifle | Level 36 | S | Meta, #1 marksman | #18 | 0.4% |
*Unlock levels come from Activision’s Ready for Launch: Weapons Detail post. Its summary table and its per-weapon entries disagree on a few guns: Level 5 vs 13 for the VEL 46, and 46 vs 34 for the X-58 Nyx. Activision’s own progression screenshot lists the VEL 46 among the Level 1-5 rewards. Check your Progression menu to be sure.
Two points stand out. The Han 86’s lead in pick rate is huge. Partly that’s because it’s a starter gun, and many players haven’t unlocked the M4 or Kastov yet. The Mosin-Nagant is the opposite: two editorial lists rate it top tier, but hardly anyone runs it. It’s a 5-round marksman rifle firing 44 rounds per minute, so it only rewards players who land their shots.

Best Han 86 loadout
The Han 86 fires at 740 RPM from a 30-round magazine. Activision describes it as a 5.56 rifle with “moderate damage” that’s capable both up close and at range. The weapon tops out at level 72. Its three builds have one clear point of agreement:
| Slot | Activision Gunny “Balanced” | CODMunity (Oct 22) | Insider Gaming (Oct 23) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Muzzle | – | XRK Mil-Tac Suppressor | FTAC Dominion Compensator (Lv 24) |
| Barrel | SA H86 465mm | SA H86 465mm (Lv 68) | – |
| Optic | IOTA-D Mini Reflex | ZLR Type C | FJX 708 PRO (Lv 66) |
| Underbarrel | FSS Fireline Grip | – | GW DOMI-9 Front Grip (Lv 22) |
| Rear grip | Tactical rear grip | XRK Justice II Grip | Hanbit H86 Grip (Lv 34) |
| Laser | Schlager Visiv-5 | XRK Clutch-LS | – |
| Stock | – | – | Meiko L9P-Fold Stock (Lv 45) |
The SA H86 465mm long barrel appears in both Activision’s Gunny suggestion and CODMunity’s build. In Activision’s screenshot of the Balanced build, the five attachments add +14 range and +9 accuracy and cost 4 mobility and 4 handling. The catch is that CODMunity lists the barrel at weapon level 68 of 72, so you won’t have it at first. Insider Gaming’s build gets by without it, using a compensator and two grips for recoil control at mid to long range. Expect to run something like it until the barrel unlocks. The levels in these tables are the attachment unlock levels that CODMunity’s attachment lists show.
Best M4 loadout
The M4 fires faster than the Han 86 (810 RPM vs 740) and unlocks at Player Level 14. Its two leading builds share no attachments, because they solve different problems:
| Slot | CODMunity (Oct 22) | Insider Gaming (Oct 23) |
|---|---|---|
| Muzzle | XRK Mil-Tac Suppressor | FTAC Dominion Compensator (Lv 45) |
| Barrel | 18″ LE Crosswind | – |
| Optic | ZLR Type C | Slimline Elite (Lv 13) |
| Underbarrel | – | FSS Fireline Grip (Lv 38) |
| Rear grip | – | Brace DX Grip (Lv 10) |
| Laser | SA Laz-500 | – |
| Stock | Demo Dozer Stock | PF1 Fixed Stock (Lv 14) |
CODMunity’s build pairs a suppressor with a longer barrel for range. Insider Gaming’s build is the easier one to put together early: four of its five parts unlock by weapon level 38. CODMunity’s calculated time to kill for its build is 296 ms at 0-10 m, against 243 ms for its Han 86 build. That gap helps explain why the trackers keep the Han 86 on top.
Best VEL 46 loadout
The VEL 46 fires at 952 RPM with 40 rounds. Activision says it pairs “exceptional maneuverability with smooth, predictable recoil.” Both builds start from the same two parts: the VB-46 Series 11 barrel (weapon level 3) and the FSS Fireline Grip (level 10). Both unlock early, so a strong VEL 46 comes quickly.
| Slot | CODMunity (Oct 22) | Insider Gaming (Oct 23) |
|---|---|---|
| Barrel | VB-46 Series 11 | VB-46 Series 11 (Lv 3) |
| Underbarrel | FSS Fireline Grip | FSS Fireline Grip (Lv 10) |
| Muzzle | XRK Herder 40 | TA Lightning R3M Flash Hider (Lv 35) |
| Rear grip | V46 R-Skel Grip | – |
| Laser | XRK Clutch-LS | – |
| Magazine | – | 60 Round Drum (Lv 33) |
| Ammunition | – | 4.6x30mm High Velocity (Lv 57) |
| Apex | VEL 46 Snap | – |
Insider Gaming leaves the optic off, saying the iron sights are clean enough. CODMunity adds the VEL 46 Snap Apex Attachment, which you get only at max weapon level (60). Apex Attachments don’t use one of the five attachment slots. The Snap is a tactical sling that blocks the stock. With the Overkill perk it allows Quick Draw, which makes the VEL 46 a fast swap weapon in a two-primary class.

Best ISO Nightshade loadout
The ISO Nightshade is a 923 RPM, 30-round 9mm SMG that you can use from Level 4, so it’s the best SMG for a new account. The two builds overlap only on the 40 Round Mag (weapon level 10), and they suit different players:
| Slot | CODMunity (Oct 22) | Insider Gaming (Oct 23) |
|---|---|---|
| Muzzle | XRK Herder 40 | FSS Crackdown Heavy Silencer (Lv 4) |
| Magazine | 40 Round Mag | 40 Round Mag (Lv 10) |
| Optic | – (blocked by ISO Trace) | Slimline Elite (Lv 18) |
| Underbarrel | FSS Fireline Grip | – |
| Rear grip | Demo STP-1 | Bruen MOD3 (Lv 35) |
| Stock | EXP G2-44 Stock | – |
| Laser | – | QFL-S4.5 (Lv 59) |
| Apex | ISO Trace | – |
The heavy silencer in Insider’s build unlocks at weapon level 4; Insider picks it to stay quiet and off the minimap and to steady the gun at longer ranges. The ISO Trace Apex (max level 64) fires rounds that tag targets and shows their movement on the optic’s display. It blocks the optic and ammunition slots, which is why CODMunity’s build has no sight.
Kastov 762 and KG-7 Vulcan builds
Kastov 762 (Level 34). It fires 7.62x39mm at 600 RPM. Activision warns of “equally firm recoil”, so every Kastov build is mostly recoil control. Insider Gaming: Usenko 308-1L flash hider (Lv 25), Mire-50 Tac Grip (Lv 38), FJX Kastov Grip (Lv 17), Spetsnaz S10 Stock (Lv 19) and the FJX 708 PRO optic (Lv 69). CODMunity: Ivanov QR600 muzzle, XRK Clutch-LS laser, Hanbit 655L-M Stock, Hanbit TechGrip and FSS Fireline Grip, plus the Kastov ARC Apex, an RF-pulse barrel that blocks the barrel slot.
KG-7 Vulcan (Level 4). It’s a 10-round bolt-action that Activision says has a “higher rate of fire for quickly sending shots downrange”, and it’s free from the start. CODMunity’s sniper build (Oct 23): Ivanov QR600 muzzle, TT Baem 12″ barrel, KT76 Light Bolt, Schlager 7x optic and TT Type 40 Comb, with the KG-7 Drillcharge Apex at weapon level 75. We found only one detailed launch-build source for the KG-7, so treat it as a starting point.
Best perks for these loadouts
MW4 uses Pick 3: one perk from each slot. Infinity Ward moved several perks after the beta, and some launch guides still group them the old way. Insider Gaming’s loadout guides, for example, list Ninja and Quick Fix as Perk 1 options and Blood Rush as Perk 3. At launch, Ninja, Bomb Squad, Fast Hands and Blood Rush all sit in Perk 2, and Quick Fix is Perk 1. Here are sets that actually fit the launch slots. Our MW4 perks list has the full slot chart and every unlock level.
| Loadout | Perk 1 | Perk 2 | Perk 3 | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VEL 46 / ISO flanker | Ghost (Lv 24) | Ninja (Lv 30) | Battle Hardened (Lv 12) | Hidden from UAVs and radar, quiet footsteps, less effect from flashes and stuns |
| SMG objective player | Quick Fix (Lv 4) | Blood Rush (Lv 4) | Battle Hardened (Lv 12) | Health regen on kills and captures, plus Tactical Sprint (only Blood Rush grants it) |
| Han 86 / M4 anchor | Ghost (Lv 24) | Fast Hands (Lv 20) | Cold-Blooded (Lv 36) | Faster reloads and swaps for long fights, hidden from thermals and AI targeting |
| KG-7 sniper | Ghost (Lv 24) | Fast Hands (Lv 20) | Combat Grid (Lv 4) | Quicker swaps to your sidearm, and you see enemy equipment through walls |
| VEL 46 Snap two-primary | Overkill (Lv 4) | Fast Hands (Lv 20) | Battle Hardened (Lv 12) | Overkill enables the Snap’s Quick Draw. Fast Hands speeds up the swap |
These sets follow Activision’s official perk descriptions. They aren’t measured win rates. If you play for streaks, swap Perk 2 to Hardline: according to the launch patch notes, it makes the UAV 4 kills instead of 5 (see our MW4 killstreaks list).
Best loadout before you unlock attachments
Most of the builds above use parts from the second half of a weapon’s levels. Here’s how to get strong sooner, using systems Activision built into MW4:
- Level shared attachments on one gun. In MW4 each attachment unlocks once and then works on every weapon that can use it. When you reach a level that would award an attachment you already own, you get a bonus level-up and skip ahead. The FSS Fireline Grip and XRK Clutch-LS laser show up in builds for five of the six guns above, so unlocking them once pays off on every gun you level afterwards.
- Use Gunny. Activision’s attachment optimizer in Create-a-Class builds Short-Range, Balanced and Long-Range setups from the attachments you’ve already unlocked. It’s a sound default until you reach the parts in the tables above.
- Start with the Han 86 or ISO Nightshade. Both are available at Level 4, both rank in the top group everywhere, and the FSS Crackdown silencer from Insider’s ISO build unlocks at weapon level 4.
- Test in the Firing Range. The Multiplayer range shows a TTK readout and has dummies at 10, 25, 50 and 100 meters with optional armor plates. You can cycle loadouts without leaving it, so compare builds there before you take one into a match.

Will the MW4 meta change soon?
Probably within days. Infinity Ward’s October 23 launch update says the team is “looking closely at weapon performance” and is “already looking at potential weapon tuning for next week.” The pre-launch notes say SMGs were made “more efficient in close to mid-range combat” after the beta, and that one-shot weapons were “tempered with flinch and damage tuning”. That last change may be why few players run the Mosin-Nagant. The same update says the early seasonal Apex Attachments from the beta are gone for now and “will return soon.”
Multiplayer and DMZ also have separate weapon tuning, so a strong multiplayer build won’t automatically carry over into Hajin. For extraction loadouts, start with our MW4 DMZ beginner guide. For more frames per second and better visibility, see our MW4 best settings guide. For upcoming content, see the MW4 Season 1 roadmap. We’ll update this page when the first balance patch lands.
