MW4 caps at Level 55, then 10 Prestige levels and 1,000 Prestige Master levels. Classic vs Regular Prestige, every reward, icons, and the camo grind.

MW4 prestige starts once you reach Level 55, the multiplayer max level (Commander). From there Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has 10 Prestige levels, then 1,000 Prestige Master levels. For the first time in the series you pick between two paths each time you Prestige: Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks for a 20% XP boost and a Permanent Unlock Token, while Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 but keeps everything you’ve unlocked. All numbers here come from Activision’s Ready for Launch: Progression and Prestige post (October 19), ahead of the game’s October 23 launch.

Quick answer: MW4 progression at a glance

  • Max level: 55 in multiplayer (Private I to Commander). DMZ has its own separate track of 70 levels.
  • Prestige: 10 Prestige levels, each themed on an older Infinity Ward game, with a reward every 10 levels.
  • Prestige Master: Levels 56 to 1,000. Level 1,000 is “Prestige Legend”, and Activision is keeping its rewards secret.
  • Classic vs Regular: You choose at Level 55 and again at every new Prestige. Classic resets level unlocks and Create-a-Class, Regular keeps them.
  • Prestige icons: From Prestige Master Level 100, and every 100 levels after that, you unlock sets of legacy Prestige icons from past Call of Duty games plus the new MW4 icons.
  • Weapons: Every gun has its own level, eight Military camos, three Special camos, then the Completionist and Mastery camo chain. A separate Weapon Prestige adds four “Pyroclast” camos.
  • Season 1: Activision’s post only says “shortly after launch”. Insider Gaming reports Activision has set it for November 6. Warzone joins MW4 progression from then.

What is the max level in MW4?

The multiplayer player level runs from 1 to 55. You earn XP for matches, eliminations, playing the objective and completing challenges, and Activision says every level from 1 to 55 gives at least one unlock: weapons, Lethal and Tactical equipment, Field Upgrades, Perks, Killstreaks and Create-a-Class itself (Level 4). The last unlocks at Level 55 are the Cronen Squall assault rifle and the Air Lockdown Killstreak. Our MW4 launch weapons and Operators guide covers the 33 guns and their unlock levels.

The XP sources feeding that 1-55 track:

  • Multiplayer: counts from launch.
  • DMZ: counts toward the 1-55 level as well as DMZ’s own 70-level track.
  • Warzone: counts from Season 1, when MW4 level unlocks also become usable in Warzone.

It doesn’t work the other way round: XP from multiplayer or Warzone does not raise your DMZ level. DMZ’s 70 levels unlock FOB Stations, Station upgrades, 3D Printer recipes, Operator skins and Fire Support. Our MW4 DMZ beginner guide explains how that mode works.

How MW4 Prestige works: Classic vs Regular

When you finish Level 55, the game asks you to pick a track for Prestige 1. You get the same choice every time you complete a Prestige level, so picking Classic once doesn’t lock you in. Activision says most Prestige rewards are shared by both tracks, with extra rewards for players on Classic.

Classic Prestige Regular Prestige
Player level Back to Level 1 Back to Level 1
Level unlocks (guns, Perks, Killstreaks, equipment) Reset: you re-unlock them as you level Kept
Create-a-Class progress Reset Kept
XP boost 20% None listed
Permanent Unlock Token 1 None
Final reward of each Prestige Classic version (e.g. The Vet Prime) Regular version (e.g. The Vet)
Other Prestige rewards Shared, plus bonus cosmetics Shared

Pick Classic if you want the traditional reset-and-rebuild grind and the faster leveling from the XP boost. Pick Regular if you’d rather keep your full loadout options while you climb toward Prestige Master.

Permanent Unlock Tokens: what to spend them on

Each Classic Prestige gives you one Permanent Unlock Token. Spend it on any single level-unlock item and that item stays unlocked for the rest of your career, even through later Classic resets. Activision’s example: the Throwing Knife normally unlocks at Level 48, so a token saves you from re-earning it every Prestige.

Activision’s own tip is to spend tokens on Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and equipment rather than weapons. Any weapon blueprint you get from the Store or a Battle Pass makes that gun’s base version permanently available anyway.

What resets and what carries over when you Prestige

Activision’s post names only two things that Classic Prestige resets: level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress. Regular Prestige resets just the level number and keeps both. The post doesn’t say that player Prestige touches your camos, calling cards or weapon levels; resetting a gun is a separate, optional system (Weapon Prestige, covered below). Anything you spent a Permanent Unlock Token on, and the base version of any weapon you own a blueprint for, stays available through every reset.

Carry-forward from earlier games is a different question. In short, Black Ops 7 levels, Prestige, weapons and camos don’t come into MW4 multiplayer. Our MW4 carry-forward guide has the full list of what does move over, including COD Points and 2XP tokens. One extra from this post: players who played the Modern Warfare II DMZ Beta on the same Activision account get emblem and calling card sets, available since DMZ early access on October 20.

MW4 Prestige rewards: levels 1-10

Each Prestige level is themed on a different Infinity Ward game, starting with the original Call of Duty (2003), and gives a new reward every 10 levels. The final reward of each Prestige is a weapon blueprint or Operator skin, with a different version on each track. Prestige 1 in full:

Prestige 1 level Reward Type
Instant Sandstorm Operator skin (Army SF Airborne)
10 Call of Duty (2003) Loading screen
20 Prestige 1 Emblem
30 Engage! Weapon charm
40 Men of Service Large decal
50 The Vet (Regular) / The Vet Prime (Classic) Mosin-Nagant blueprint

For Prestige 2 to 10, Activision has published only the theme and the final reward of each level:

Prestige Inspired by Final reward Regular track Classic track
2 Call of Duty 2 (2005) PPSh-41 SMG blueprint Calm Resolve Trench Fiend
3 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007) SAS Operator skin Watchtower Watchtower Prime

Prestige Master: levels 56 to 1,000

After Prestige 10 you enter Prestige Master, and your level keeps counting past 55 up to 1,000. Rewards come every five to ten levels up to Level 99, then every 25 levels until Level 1,000, where you become a Prestige Legend.

MW4 Prestige icons

This is what most “mw4 prestige icons” searches are after. Starting at Prestige Master Level 100, every 100 levels unlocks another set of legacy Prestige icons from past Call of Duty games across the whole franchise, including the new MW4 icons. Equipping one replaces your current Prestige Master icon. You choose your Prestige icon and Prestige color under Career, Profile, which also holds your emblem, calling card and clan tag. Activision hasn’t said which game’s icons arrive at which level.

MW4 weapon levels and camo progression

Every weapon levels up separately in multiplayer and DMZ (Warzone joins in Season 1) and unlocks a new attachment at each level. Max weapon level varies by gun: Activision’s examples are 72 for the Han 86 assault rifle and 38 for the Sang 9mm pistol. Camo progress is shared across all modes, and challenge targets adjust to the mode, usually asking for more kills in DMZ because AI enemies count there.

Stage Camos How to unlock
Military 8 per weapon Reach set weapon levels (Han 86: 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57, 65)
Special 3 per weapon Challenges that open at set weapon levels, such as mounted or suppressed kills. Once earned, they join a shared pool usable on every gun.
Gold Completionist All Military and Special camos on the gun, then 15 eliminations in one multiplayer match (or 100 in a DMZ match)
Platinum Completionist Gold on every weapon in that class, then a class challenge (Han 86: 50 headshots in multiplayer)
Harmonic Break Completionist Platinum on 33 weapons, then a class challenge (Han 86: 25 double kills in multiplayer)
Divergence Completionist Complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges; opens the Mastery camos
Mastery 3 per mode Mode-specific grinds for multiplayer, DMZ and (from Season 1) Warzone

The Mastery camos, in order:

  • Multiplayer: Mercurial Drift (10 kills in a match, 250 times), Polyatomic Reforged (3 kills without taking damage, 300 times), Orion Reforged (5 kills without dying, 500 times).
  • DMZ: Chiral (2,500 Tier 3+ enemy kills), Ripple Tide (exfil two LT dog tags in one deployment, 50 times), Helio (25,000 kills with Legendary weapons on a max-level Operator).
  • Warzone: Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros. Their challenges stay classified until Season 1.

MW4 Weapon Prestige and the Pyroclast camos

Once a gun hits its max level, you can choose to enter Weapon Prestige. It’s optional. Doing it resets that weapon to Level 1 and relocks its attachments, except Apex attachments and those from weapon blueprints. Your camos, blueprints, reticles, decals and stickers stay, and shared attachments on your other guns aren’t affected. You also get a Weapon Prestige icon shown in Gunsmith and on the Killcam.

Camo Unlock
Pyroclast Reach Weapon Prestige 1, Level 1
Pyroclast Terminus Reach max level in Weapon Prestige 1
Pyroclast Scatter Weapon Prestige Master Level 150
Pyroclast Cascade Weapon Prestige Master Level 250

Reaching max level a second time moves the weapon into Weapon Prestige Master automatically. There’s no second reset: the level keeps climbing and you keep all attachments. Double Weapon XP tokens speed all of this up.

Daily challenges and calling cards

Multiplayer has three Daily Challenges that pay XP, with a bigger bonus for clearing all three. Once a day you can reroll one of them. Warzone gets its own set from Season 1.

Calling card challenges sit under Career, Challenges, Calling Cards. They’re split into Regular sets (multiplayer, DMZ and shared modes) and Elite sets, and finishing whole sets and categories earns animated Mastery calling cards. The Elite list also includes the campaign cards for Veteran, Realism and YOLO, covered in our MW4 YOLO mode guide.

When does MW4 Season 1 start?

Activision’s progression post doesn’t give a date, only “shortly after launch”. Insider Gaming reported on October 14 that Activision had set Season 1 for Friday, November 6. Before that, Activision’s maps and modes post confirms Shipment arriving on October 27, plus two Halloween modes, Possession and Infected, before Season 1. Season 1 is when Warzone XP starts counting, MW4 unlocks reach Warzone, and the Warzone Mastery camos are revealed. If you’re still waiting to play, our MW4 release time guide has the October 23 unlock time for your region.

FAQ

How many Prestige levels are in MW4?

Ten Prestige levels, followed by Prestige Master, which runs from Level 56 to Level 1,000 (Prestige Legend).

Should I pick Classic or Regular Prestige in MW4?

Classic gives a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and Classic-track versions of the final rewards (such as The Vet Prime), but resets your unlocks and classes. Regular keeps your unlocks. You can switch tracks at every new Prestige.

How do you get Prestige icons in MW4?

Reach Prestige Master Level 100. Each 100 levels after that unlocks another set of legacy Prestige icons from older Call of Duty games, alongside the new MW4 icons.

Does Prestiging reset weapon levels in MW4?

Activision lists only level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress as what Classic Prestige resets. Weapon levels reset only if you choose Weapon Prestige for that gun, and even then camos and blueprints stay.
