Best free games on Steam to play with friends
All of these list online co-op or team play on their Steam pages. The ones with crossplay also let friends join from consoles.
- Warframe (Digital Extremes): story-driven online co-op with cross-platform play. It has the best review score on this list, and the long-term grind suits a regular group.

- Apex Legends and THE FINALS: both built around squads. Apex mixes hero abilities with battle royale. THE FINALS is a game-show arena shooter where you can destroy the map.
- Destiny 2 and Once Human: PvE co-op with optional PvP. Once Human adds base building in a strange post-apocalyptic world.
- Brawlhalla: up to eight players online, or split-screen on one PC. It also has crossplay with PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android, so it works for mixed groups.

Team Fortress 2 is the safest choice for a very old laptop: Valve still lists Windows XP-era requirements. Brawlhalla is the lightest download by far. Newer games are much heavier. Marvel Rivals asks for 16 GB of RAM and a GTX 1060, and THE FINALS asks for 12 GB and a GTX 1050 Ti.

New free-to-play games on Steam in 2026
Aniimo (Pawprint Studio) launched on September 15, 2026 and topped Steam’s free-to-play top sellers when we checked. You catch and “Twine” with creatures across an open world, with co-op, PvP and crossplay. Reviews are Mostly Positive (71%). We track its codes and best creatures in our Aniimo codes and tier list.
AION 2 (NC) has more players than any other new release: 179,733 at 12:17 UTC. Its reviews are split, though (Mixed, 51% of 20,299). Read reviews before you commit, and see our AION 2 class tier list if you try it.
Where Winds Meet (Everstone Studio, NetEase) arrived on November 14, 2025. It’s an open-world wuxia RPG with crossplay on PC, PS5, Xbox and mobile, and an 86% positive score. Its Steam page says gameplay content is free and monetization is limited to cosmetics.
Free cozy games on Steam
- Palia: crafting, home building, ranch animals and horse riding in a shared world, with online co-op and crossplay.
- The Sims 4: the base game is free. Steam lists 115 paid packs for it, but you don’t need any of them to play. Start with our Sims 4 cheats list.
- Sky: Children of the Light (thatgamecompany): a gentle flying adventure with seasonal events, where you team up with other players without words. It’s 86% positive and needs only 3 GB of storage.

Are free Steam games really free?
You can play all of them without paying. Some keep certain features behind a payment, so here’s what each store page says:
- Rainbow Six Siege: free access covers Quick Match and Unranked with a selection of operators. Ubisoft says Ranked, Siege Cup, extra operators and cosmetics “require payment to unlock”.
- Counter-Strike 2: the optional Prime Status Upgrade costs $14.99. Valve says it matches you with other Prime players and makes you eligible for item drops, weapon cases and Prime-exclusive souvenirs.
- Destiny 2: the base game is free, but story expansions such as The Final Shape and Renegades are sold separately.
- Dota 2: Valve’s page says all heroes are free. You only pay for cosmetics.
- Most of the rest sell cosmetics, battle passes or currency through in-app purchases. Apex Legends’ page warns that some purchases give a random selection of items.
