The Sims 4 has no ready-made Halloween holiday. If you own the Seasons expansion, you create a Sims 4 Spooky Day holiday yourself in the calendar and give it the traditions Trick or Treat, Wear Costumes, Spooky Spirit and Decorate. The Spooky Stuff pack adds the candy bowl, pumpkin carving, the Spooky Party and most of the costumes. This guide covers the setup step by step, why trick-or-treaters sometimes never show up, what each pack adds, and what EA has actually released for Halloween 2026 (checked October 30, 2026, 04:30 UTC).
- Is there Halloween? Not as a pre-made holiday. Seasons ships four (Love Day, Harvestfest, Winterfest, New Year’s Eve), and you add Spooky Day with Add Holiday.
- Trick-or-treating is a Seasons tradition. Costumed kids and teens come to your door. Your own Sims can’t go door to door without a mod.
- Spooky Stuff ($9.99) is optional but adds the most Halloween in one pack: candy bowl, carving station, Spooky Party, costumes and makeup.
- EA’s Halloween 2026: a 31-task Simstober challenge list (October 1) and five paid Halloween Maker Packs on the Marketplace. The October 27 update notes contain no free Halloween gift.

Is there Halloween in The Sims 4?
Not out of the box. The calendar has been in the base game since patch 115, the Cottage Living update, but only for parties and events. The Add Holiday button needs The Sims 4 Seasons. According to The Sims Wiki’s holiday page, Seasons comes with four pre-made holidays: Love Day, Harvestfest, Winterfest and New Year’s Eve. There’s no Halloween among them.
That gap is by design. When Seasons was revealed in June 2018, SimGuru George Pigula answered a fan question with “You create your own spooky day. We give you the tools”, as Sims Community’s Q&A roundup records. Every Halloween tradition already exists in the game. You just have to put them on a day.

How to make Spooky Day in the Sims 4 calendar
This needs Seasons (PC, Mac, PlayStation or Xbox).
- Click Show Calendar, the button under the active Sim’s portrait at the bottom left.
- Pick a day in Fall and choose Add Holiday.
- Name it (Spooky Day is what most players use) and set the decoration theme to Spooky. Neighboring houses then decorate themselves automatically. Your own household decorates through the Attic Stack Decoration Box in Build Mode.
- Add traditions. A holiday can have up to five. The core four are Trick or Treat, Wear Costumes, Spooky Spirit and Decorate.
- Save it. Holidays repeat every in-game year across the whole save and run from 6:00 AM to 2:00 AM the next day. When the holiday ends, each Sim gets a happy or sad moodlet depending on how many traditions they completed.
Custom holidays belong to the save you make them in, so you can run different holidays in different saves.
Spooky Day traditions: what to add and how to complete them
These are the in-game tradition instructions as listed on The Sims Wiki. Sims with the “loved by” traits enjoy them more. Sims in the “ignored by” groups don’t take part.

A note on the fifth slot: Remembrance fits a household with ghosts or a family graveyard. Mischief Spirit suits kid-heavy households, because children love it.
How trick-or-treating works in The Sims 4
When the Trick or Treat tradition is active, the game spawns child and teen Sims in costumes. They walk up to your house and wait at the door. Click one and you get two choices. Trick! makes your Sim scare them, and Sims Community’s guide says it builds a little Mischief skill. Treat! hands over a piece of candy. Ignore them and they leave after a while.
With Spooky Stuff installed, trick-or-treaters can take candy from the Spooky Candy Bowl themselves. Pigula confirmed this in 2018: kids “can take candy from there”, and without the pack “they knock on your door and you have to trick or treat them”. If you don’t want strangers walking inside, put the bowl outside by the door.

Trick or treat not working? Check these first
- Is the tradition actually on the holiday? Custom holidays only do what you add. Open the calendar and check that Trick or Treat is listed on today’s holiday.
- Are you home during the holiday? Trick-or-treaters come to your house, so a household that spends the whole of Spooky Day at a venue or on vacation can miss them.
- Who is doing it? Infants and toddlers ignore this tradition, so have an older Sim answer the door.
- Mods: script mods often break after a patch. If holidays act strangely since the October 27 update, go through our list of Sims 4 mods broken by the October 2026 update before blaming the game.
- Old bug: in 2019 players reported holidays with no trick-or-treaters at all. EA’s bug-report forum marked it fixed in patch 1.58.63 that year. If it happens on a fully updated game, report it on EA’s forums with your platform and patch number.
Can your own Sims go trick-or-treating?
Not in the unmodded game. The tradition only works in one direction. On PC and Mac, the community-made Trick Or Treat mod by Tinycoffeecups adds a “Spooky Day at Home” event and a trick-or-treating event where your Sims visit other houses, plus candy buckets and extra candy bowls. That’s according to Sims Community’s October 21, 2026 walkthrough, which also says it requires Lot51’s Core Library and six packs: Seasons, Get Famous, For Rent, High School Years, Life & Death and Spooky Stuff. It is an unofficial mod, so EA doesn’t support it, it doesn’t work on console, and you should check it’s been updated for patch 1.129 before installing.
Sims 4 Spooky Day costumes: where they come from
- Seasons: the Wear Costume interaction (click the Sim, choose Wear Costume). The tradition’s own text jokes about dressing up “as a Llama or a Fairy”. Sims Community notes that without Spooky Stuff, this uses the base game’s preset costumes.
- Spooky Stuff: costumes “from Pirates to Super Llamas”, according to EA’s pack description. The Sims Wiki counts them per age group. Adult and teen women get 4 hats, 6 outfits, 2 face paints, 8 accessories and 4 pairs of shoes. Men get 4 hats, 5 outfits, 2 face paints and 1 pair of shoes. Children get 2 hats, 3-4 outfits and a face paint each. Guests at a Spooky Party arrive in these costumes.
- Base game (free): Sims Community points to Day of the Dead items (search “Day of the Dead” in Build Mode). In Create a Sim you get a child full-body outfit, a women’s full-body outfit, face paint and a floral hairstyle, plus the base game’s Star Wars and Final Fantasy XV costumes.
- Your own outfit: any Create a Sim outfit works as a costume. EA’s Simstober list has a “Dress to Impress: Create a Costume for a Sim” task for exactly that.

What EA released for Sims 4 Halloween 2026
As of October 30, 2026, this is everything on EA’s Sims 4 news page that relates to Halloween.
- Simstober challenges (October 1): 31 themed tasks, from “Grow a Cowplant” to “Defy Grim and Save a Life”. Screenshots posted in the #simstober-entries channel of the official Sims Discord enter a giveaway for a pack bundle that includes Life & Death, Enchanted by Nature, Realm of Magic and Werewolves. You must be 18 or older, and the full terms are on Discord.
- Halloween Maker Packs (paid, with Moola): these are creator-made packs sold in the official Sims 4 Marketplace. Sims Community reported five in October: Stay Spooky by KendyNambu (10 build items, about $3; October 19), Witching Hour by SolunaRae (10 build items, about $2) and Vamp Glam by LoopZ (8 Create a Sim items, about $2; both October 22), and Autumn Harvest of the Green Witch by ModCollective (about $2) and My Little Vampire Lair by SixamCC (30 objects, about $5; both October 26).
- No free Halloween item in the patch: the October 27 update notes contain bug fixes plus, per Sims Community, free elder Create a Sim and Build items. Nothing in them is spooky. Our October 2026 update breakdown has the details.
- The Spooky Collection is real-world merch on The Sims Shop (October 8): a Grim Reaper cardigan, Bonehilda tees and so on. It isn’t in-game content.

Do you need Spooky Stuff to trick or treat in The Sims 4?

Why can’t my Sims go trick-or-treating?
The tradition only brings costumed kids to your door. Taking your own Sims door to door needs a mod on PC or Mac, such as the Trick Or Treat mod covered above.
Does Spooky Day work on PS5 and Xbox?
Yes. Seasons and Spooky Stuff are on PlayStation and Xbox, and the Marketplace Maker Packs work on console too. Mods don’t.
