Sony has shipped 97.9 million PS5s, 2.6 million of them in July-September. Wolverine passed 2.4 million and PSN hit 127 million monthly users. PS6 is on track.

PS5 sales have reached 97.9 million units shipped worldwide, Sony said in its financial results for the July-September quarter, published on Thursday, November 5. The console shipped 2.6 million units in the three months to September 30, Marvel’s Wolverine has passed 2.4 million copies, and PlayStation Network hit 127 million monthly active users, according to Gematsu and VGC.

The headline for players is not the hardware number, though. Sony’s finance chief also said work on the next PlayStation is “progressing as scheduled”, and that the company has already lined up the memory chips it needs for next year.

PS5 sales and PlayStation numbers for July-September 2026

Metric Figure Period
PS5 shipped (lifetime) 97.9 million As of Sept 30, 2026
PS5 shipped in the quarter 2.6 million July-Sept 2026
Marvel’s Wolverine sales 2.4 million+ As of Nov 4, 2026
PlayStation Network monthly active users 127 million September 2026
PS5 + PS4 software sold 88.2 million July-Sept 2026
First-party software 8.2 million July-Sept 2026
Digital share of full-game sales 78% July-Sept 2026

For context, Sony Interactive’s own business data page, which has not yet been updated for this quarter, puts the April-June quarter at 1.6 million PS5 units, lifetime shipments at “more than 95 million” as of June 30, and monthly active users at 125 million. The same table lists 80.3 million PS5 and PS4 games sold in July-September 2025, so the 88.2 million figure is a gain of about 7.9 million units, matching what Gematsu reported.

Marvel’s Wolverine passes 2.4 million

Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine launched worldwide on September 15 as a PS5 exclusive, made with Marvel Games. Gematsu reports it had sold 2.4 million units by November 4, about seven weeks after release. VGC notes that Sony credited first-party games, alongside third-party sales, for its improved outlook. Wolverine was already the most downloaded PS5 game in the US and Canada in September, as we covered in our PS Store September 2026 top downloads report.

Game business up, forecast raised

According to VGC, Sony’s game segment grew sales 9% and operating income 89% year on year. The company raised its full-year forecasts for both, citing stronger third-party sales (VGC names GTA 6 specifically), first-party releases and cost improvements.

On the global component shortage and rising memory costs, Sony said it had offset higher prices “through adjustments to promotions and pricing, as well as additional cost reductions”, and expects PS5 hardware profitability to stay in line with last year. Looking further out, it said: “Regarding memory procurement for the next fiscal year, based on discussions held so far with various suppliers, we have aligned on the quantity of memory needed for our projected unit sales.” Sony’s next fiscal year starts in April 2027.

What Sony said about PlayStation 6

CFO Lin Tao said during a web call for the results that development of the next-generation platform is “progressing as scheduled”, VGC reports. “Although new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining as expected at this stage of the console life cycle, the PlayStation platform continues to expand and grow in a stable manner,” Tao said. “Looking ahead to the next fiscal year, we aim to continue to enhance user engagement and further strengthen monetization through the release of strong titles and the expansion of our service. We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform.”

That is not a release date. VGC points out that CEO Hiroki Totoki said on an earlier call this year that Sony had not decided when PlayStation 6 will launch. What the comments do show is that Sony treats the year starting April 2027 as one of preparation for PS6, with memory supply already agreed for its projected unit sales.

What it means for players

PS5 is now a little over 2 million units short of 100 million shipped, a mark the holiday quarter could cross: Sony shipped 7.9 million PS5s in October-December 2025, according to its business data table. With new PS5 sales slowing as Sony expected, Tao’s own focus is engagement, strong releases and services, and the 78% digital share and 127 million monthly users show where that money now comes from. The Nintendo side of today’s results is in our Switch 2 sales and Nintendo earnings report, and Microsoft’s latest quarter is in our Xbox Q1 FY27 earnings breakdown.

What’s next

Sony’s next report covers October-December, the quarter that includes the PS Store Black Friday sale, GTA 6’s launch (see our GTA 6 countdown) and the new PS5 Prism Collection controllers and covers. That is when we will know whether PS5 crossed 100 million shipped.
