Does MW4 Have Zombies? Modes, Possession and Infected Explained

MW4 launched with Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, and no Zombies or MWZ. Halloween’s Possession and Infected are PvP party modes, not undead PvE.

Does MW4 have Zombies? No. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launched on October 23 with three modes, Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, and none of them is a round-based Zombies mode or an open-world MWZ follow-up. Activision has not announced Zombies for any later season either.

The two Halloween modes arriving next week, Possession and Infected, are player-versus-player party modes. Neither one adds undead enemies. Here’s what the official posts say, and where the Zombies question stands on launch day.

Does MW4 have Zombies? What the official mode list says

Activision’s own reveal post is clear on the lineup. On May 28, the PlayStation Blog announcement, written by Activision, ran under the headline “Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ launches October 23” and promised intel on “all three modes”. It describes a single-player Campaign in which war erupts on the Korean Peninsula after a North Korean invasion, “grounded, precise combat” in Multiplayer, and the return of DMZ as “the definitive Call of Duty extraction mode”. Zombies isn’t mentioned.

Outlets that covered the reveal read it the same way. Dexerto’s MW4 wiki says the game “will not have a Zombies mode of any sort, including MWZ”, the open-world mode from Modern Warfare 3. Insider Gaming adds that there’s no round-based option either. Note that neither outlet quotes a direct Activision statement ruling Zombies out. Their conclusion rests on the official three-mode lineup.

Mode In MW4 at launch? What it is
Campaign Yes Single-player story with Captain Price
Multiplayer Yes 6v6, Ground War, Gunfight, Kill Block
DMZ Yes PvPvE extraction against AI soldiers and other squads
Round-based Zombies No Last seen in Black Ops 7
MWZ (open-world Zombies) No Was in Modern Warfare 3 (2023)

If you want PvE action this year, DMZ comes closest. Its enemies are human AI soldiers, not zombies. Our MW4 DMZ beginner guide covers the Hajin map, exfil and what you keep. For a story-first option, see our MW4 campaign length and missions guide.

Are Possession and Infected Zombies modes?

No. Both modes are multiplayer modes in which players fight other players. The launch patch notes say “Infected and the new Possession mode are also dropping next week as a Halloween treat.” Activision’s Maps & Modes blog describes them like this:

  • Possession (new): a “party mode moshpit”. When you eliminate an enemy, you possess them: you jump to their spot on the map and take over their loadout. That lets you hop onto a Hardpoint or clear a Search and Destroy bombsite. The catch is that every kill moves you, so pick your targets carefully.
  • Infected (returning): Survivors vs. the Infected. One player starts on the Infected team at random, and every Survivor they eliminate joins them. Survivors try to hold out as long as possible.

On the roadmap Activision shared on October 14, Possession is dated October 29 and Infected October 30, according to Inven Global’s transcription. Activision’s written posts only say “next week”. Our MW4 Season 1 release date and roadmap post has the full schedule.

Will MW4 get Zombies later?

Nothing official points that way. The roadmap’s post-launch items are Shipment, Possession, Infected and then Season 1 with the new Warzone (November 6, per Inven Global and Insider Gaming). None of them is Zombies. As of October 23, neither the Call of Duty blog’s MW4 posts nor the launch patch notes mention Zombies for MW4, and neither do the recent @CallofDuty posts we checked. We also found no credible report or leak pointing to a Zombies mode. Anything you see claiming otherwise is unconfirmed until Activision posts it.

What’s next: Possession and Infected arrive next week, followed by Season 1 and the new Warzone on November 6 (roadmap date per outlets). We’ll update this post if Zombies or any other PvE mode appears in the Season 1 notes. Until then, round-based Zombies is in Black Ops 7.
