Village in the Shade unlocks Oct 27 at 9 a.m. ET on PS5, with Switch, Switch 2 and an English Steam patch the same day. $49.99, Limited Edition $89.99.

Village in the Shade, Nippon Ichi Software’s horror-tinged farming sim, launches in English on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC. The US PlayStation Store lists the unlock at 13:00 UTC (9 a.m. ET), the digital game costs $49.99 on Steam and the US Nintendo eShop, and the $89.99 Limited Edition is the version to watch if you want the collector’s box. On PC the game is already out in Asian languages, so English arrives as a free patch, and that changes how you should start your save.

This guide covers the release time on each platform, every edition and what’s in it, the separate Switch and Switch 2 versions, the new content coming with the English launch, and who this unusual cozy game is really for. Prices and store details were checked on October 24, 2026 at 13:50 UTC.

Quick answer

  • Release date: October 27, 2026 in North America and Europe on PS5, Switch 2, Switch and PC (Steam), per NIS America’s announcement.
  • Release time: the US PlayStation Store lists 13:00 UTC (9 a.m. ET, 6 a.m. PT). Nintendo and Steam haven’t published an exact time.
  • Price: $49.99 digital on Steam and the US eShop (Switch and Switch 2). The physical Limited Edition is $89.99 at the NIS America store.
  • PC players: the Steam version has been out since July 29 in Japanese, Korean and Chinese. English, French and Spanish arrive in a free language patch on October 27, and the language is locked per save file.
  • Not a fan of horror? The “Village in the Sunshine” mode removes the scares so you can just farm, fish and hunt.
  • Rating: ESRB T for Teen (Violence, Blood, Language, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco). Single player only.

What is Village in the Shade?

You move to Kagatsu, a hand-painted Japanese mountain village, where you plant crops, raise livestock, decorate your home and get to know your neighbours. NIS America’s store text sums up the twist in three rules: “don’t talk to strangers, don’t leave the village, and, whatever you do, don’t go out at night.” Breaking those rules is how you uncover what Kagatsu is hiding.

The game first launched in Japan and Asia on July 30, and NIS America says it passed 100,000 units in shipments and digital sales in Japan alone, according to Gematsu’s report on the announcement. The western reviews are now landing: Nintendo Life scored the Switch 2 version 9/10 on October 23, calling it “one of the better cosy titles to come out in the past few years”.

Village in the Shade release time on every platform

Platform Date Time (where listed) Digital price (US)
PS5 Oct 27, 2026 13:00 UTC / 9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT (US PS Store listing) Not shown on the US PS Store at check time
Nintendo Switch 2 Oct 27, 2026 Not published $49.99
Nintendo Switch Oct 27, 2026 Not published $49.99
PC (Steam) Out since July 29; English patch Oct 27 Not published $49.99

The dates come from NIS America’s official game listing, which shows “Coming 10/27/2026” for all four platforms in North America and Europe. The PS5 time is the release timestamp on the US PlayStation Store page. Neither Nintendo nor Valve lists a time, and the US eShop pages weren’t taking digital pre-orders when we checked, so expect the game to appear on the eShop on launch day rather than preloading early.

Editions and prices: Standard, Deluxe and Limited

Edition What’s included Price Where
Standard (digital) The game $49.99 Steam, Nintendo eShop, PS Store
Deluxe (physical) The game, digital soundtrack, mini art book £49.99 / €49.99 at NIS America Europe; US retailers set their own price GameStop, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Amazon (US); NISA Europe store
Limited Edition (physical) The game (a game-key card on Switch 2), collector’s box, art book, DigiPak soundtrack, peg-type acrylic stand, five enamel pins, sticker sheet $89.99 (£79.99 / €89.99 in Europe) NIS America Online Store
Steam extras Touring Kagatsu Artbook and the 38-track soundtrack “Sounds from the Shade” $9.99 each, or in the Steam Deluxe Edition Steam

The Limited Edition contents are from NIS America’s August announcement, and all three versions (PS5, Switch, Switch 2) were still listed as available on the US NIS America store when we checked. One thing to know before you order: the Switch 2 Limited Edition is a game-key card, meaning the cartridge is a key that downloads the game, not the full game on the card. NIS America only flags the Switch 2 version as a game-key card, and the Switch 1 version also runs on Switch 2 (Nintendo lists it as “Supported”), so that’s the alternative if you’d rather avoid key cards.

The NIS America store’s banner also says its shipping resumes on October 27 after a warehouse move, so Limited Edition orders may arrive a little after launch day.

Switch or Switch 2: which version should you buy?

Village in the Shade has two separate eShop listings, both at $49.99, and Nintendo’s store doesn’t list an upgrade path between them. So pick your version up front.

  • Switch 2 version: estimated download size about 6.0 GB on the US eShop. Get this one if you only play on Switch 2.
  • Switch version: estimated download size about 3.5 GB. It plays on Switch 2 too, and it’s the right choice if you share a household with an original Switch.

Both support TV, tabletop and handheld modes, and both are single player. Nintendo Life’s 9/10 review is of the Switch 2 version.

Playing on PC: set the language before you start

This is the detail most likely to trip people up. On Steam, Village in the Shade launched on July 29 with Japanese, Korean and Chinese text. NIS America confirmed in an August 10 Steam post that “the official language patch for English, French, and Spanish will launch on Tuesday 10/27/26”.

The developer’s August 14 notice explains two rules that matter:

  1. The display language can’t be changed in-game once you start a save. It’s stored separately for each save file.
  2. To pick a language, set it in Steam first: right-click the game in your Library, choose Properties, open the Language tab, and pick your language before you launch. If the language you pick isn’t supported, the game falls back to Japanese.

So if you buy now and start playing before the patch, that save stays in another language. To play in English, wait until the October 27 patch is live, set English in Steam, then start a new save. The game needs at least an Intel Core i5-6400, 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce GTX 750 Ti, with 9 GB of storage. The recommended specs are an i5-12500, 16 GB and a GTX 1650.

Who is Village in the Shade for?

It’s worth your time if you like the routine of Stardew Valley or Story of Seasons but want a story that keeps you guessing. Reviews and the developer describe a game that plays straight as a farming sim by day and turns into folk horror at night.

  • Story-first cozy players: Nintendo Life highlights the village’s “increasingly dark lore” and a mystery about your character’s past as the main hook.
  • Farming fans who want depth: the review describes crops, livestock, fishing, hunting, an abandoned quarry with procedurally generated floors for ore (like Stardew’s mines), and a skill system unlocked later.
  • Players who scare easily: NIS America’s “Village in the Sunshine” mode means “you CAN’T break the rules”, so you can farm, hunt and fish at your own pace with no horror. The developer’s patch notes treat the two modes as separate playthroughs with their own unlock conditions, and players in the Nintendo Life comments report that you choose the mode when you start, not mid-game.

It’s less suited to you if you want total freedom from the first minute. Nintendo Life calls the first hour “dialogue heavy and over-tutorialised” and notes that story progression is forced, so the game decides when you learn hunting or other new systems. The game is also ESRB T, with blood and violence, so in its main mode it isn’t a pick for young kids. For gentler options, see our list of cozy Halloween games for a gentle spooky season.

What’s new in the English launch version

The Japanese release has been updated since July, and NIS America posted on Steam on October 22 that new content arrives alongside the English launch (Free Update Patch 2, dated October 27):

Addition How to unlock it
Protagonist’s birthday event (villagers at affection level 3+ wish you happy birthday, some give gifts) Shade mode: reach Year 2, at least one day after finishing the main scenario. Sunshine mode: Year 2, at least one day after Nago moves in. A letter arrives in your mailbox.
Seeder farm tool (sows seeds, plants seedlings and spreads fertilizer over 3 tiles; upgradable at the anvil) Restore the crossroads hokora to at least stage three, then buy it at the General Store
Plumbing Fixture furniture (10 items, including bathtub, shower and sink) Get the Fox Hunting Permit

The first free update (patch 1.20, September 29 on Steam) added 11 Camping furniture pieces, Silkie Chickens, Mallards, Fluffy Cows, Spotted Goats, an extra farmland plot and a Furniture Catalog. NIS America has also announced paid DLC for spring 2027 with “new mechanics, scenarios, maps” and events. It hasn’t confirmed whether the console versions launch with every Steam patch already applied, so check the version number on day one.

Yes. It has its own Switch 2 version for $49.99 digital (about 6.0 GB). The Switch 2 Limited Edition is a game-key card. The Switch 1 version also runs on Switch 2.

Is Village in the Shade scary?

In its main mode it has folk horror, night-time encounters, blood and violence (ESRB T). The “Village in the Sunshine” mode removes the horror and stops you breaking the village rules, so it plays as a plain farming sim.

$89.99 at the NIS America Online Store for PS5, Switch or Switch 2, with a collector’s box, art book, soundtrack, acrylic stand, enamel pins and a sticker sheet.

Can I play Village in the Shade in English on Steam now?
