Dried ghast to flying mount: where to find or craft one, how long hydration takes, snowball growth in Java vs Bedrock, the harness recipe and a stable plan.

To get a Minecraft happy ghast, find or craft a dried ghast block, put it in water and wait about 20 minutes until it turns into a ghastling. The ghastling grows into a full happy ghast in another 20 minutes, or faster if you feed it snowballs. Put a harness on the adult (3 leather, 2 glass, 1 wool) and up to four players can fly on it. This guide walks through every step for Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.60, with the Java vs Bedrock differences and our own stable layout. Checked November 4, 2026 against the Minecraft Wiki and Mojang’s changelogs.

Minecraft happy ghast quick answer

  • Dried ghast: found next to Nether fossils in soul sand valleys (1 in 3 fossils), bartered from piglins, or crafted from 8 ghast tears around 1 soul sand.
  • Hydrate it: waterlog the block in the Overworld or the End. It shows three hydration stages and spawns a ghastling after about 20 minutes.
  • Grow it: a ghastling becomes an adult after 20 minutes (24,000 ticks). Snowballs speed this up: 10 snowballs do it in Bedrock, and each snowball cuts 10% of the remaining time in Java.
  • “Tame” it: there’s no taming step. Happy ghasts are passive from the start. A harness on an adult is all you need to ride it.
  • Harness recipe: 3 leather on top, then glass, wool, glass in the middle row. The wool color sets the harness color.
  • Ride it: up to 4 players. The first one to mount steers it. Jump goes up, and you go down by looking down and pressing forward.
  • Speed and health: about 3.6 m/s, which is slower than walking, and 20 HP (10 hearts). It can’t be bred.

Is there a happy ghast saddle? No, it’s a harness

A lot of players search for a “happy ghast saddle,” but saddles don’t work on happy ghasts. The ridable gear is the harness, added with happy ghasts in the Chase the Skies drop (Java 1.21.6 and Bedrock 1.21.90, both released June 17, 2025). Mojang’s Java 1.21.6 notes say the harness “can only be equipped on a Happy Ghast” and comes in 16 colors. It doesn’t act as armor either. The wiki notes that a harness can’t be enchanted in Survival.

How to get a dried ghast (the ghastling “egg”)

You can get a dried ghast in three ways. Pick whichever suits your world:

Method What you need Odds / cost Best for
Find one in a soul sand valley Get to the Nether, look around Nether fossils (big bone structures) 1 in 3 fossils has a dried ghast next to it Early game, no ghast fighting
Barter with piglins Gold ingots 10 in 469 (about 2.1%) per ingot, per the wiki’s bartering table Players with a gold farm
Craft it 8 ghast tears + 1 soul sand A ghast drops 0-1 tear without Looting Making several ghasts

Crafting recipe: put the soul sand in the center of a crafting table and fill the other 8 slots with ghast tears. Mojang’s changelogs list the same recipe for both editions.

Ghast tear drops differ by edition. In Java, Looting adds tears: the wiki’s average goes from 0.5 per ghast with no Looting to 2 with Looting III. In Bedrock the chance stays at 50% and only the maximum goes up, so Looting III averages 1.25 tears. The full Looting list is in our Minecraft enchantments guide.

A dried ghast breaks instantly by hand and always drops itself, so you can carry one home safely. When it sits dry on soul sand or soul soil, it makes cracking sounds, which can help you track one down in a soul sand valley.

How to hydrate a dried ghast

  1. Bring it out of the Nether. Water vanishes in the Nether when you pour it from a bucket, so hydrate the block in the Overworld or the End.
  2. Waterlog the block. Place the dried ghast in a water source block, or use a water bucket on it. That also earns the “Stay Hydrated!” advancement in Java and the achievement in Bedrock.
  3. Wait about 20 minutes. Mojang’s notes say it goes through 3 hydration states over roughly 20 minutes. The wiki gives the stages as about 5 minutes (partly hydrated), 10 (mostly hydrated) and 15 (fully hydrated), with the ghastling spawning around minute 20.
  4. Don’t drain or break it. If the water is removed, the block dries back out at the same speed it hydrated. If you mine it, it drops in its dry state and you start over.

Stay nearby, within simulation distance, so the block keeps getting random ticks. One water source block is enough; you don’t need a pool.

Ghastling: how to grow it fast (or keep it small)

A ghastling is the baby happy ghast. It’s tiny (0.95 blocks), follows nearby players within 16 blocks, and also follows adult passive mobs like cows, horses, villagers and other happy ghasts. If nothing is nearby, it roams within 32 blocks of its home spot. Unlike adults, ghastlings don’t drown underwater.

Growth Java 26.3 Bedrock 26.60
Natural growth time 20 minutes (24,000 ticks) 20 minutes
Snowballs Each snowball cuts 10% of the remaining time 10 snowballs grow a newly spawned ghastling
Spawn egg Use the egg on an existing happy ghast or ghastling to get a baby Same, plus a 5% chance that any happy ghast egg spawns a ghastling
Freeze its age Golden dandelion (since 26.1) Golden dandelion (since 26.10)

Snowballs: feed them by using a snowball on the ghastling. Get them by digging snow with a shovel. In Java, a stack of snowballs gets you close to an adult quickly, but the 10% rule means each snowball removes less time than the one before.

Want a pet ghastling forever? Craft a golden dandelion (a dandelion surrounded by 8 gold nuggets) and use it on the ghastling. Mojang added it in the Tiny Takeover drop (Java 26.1, Bedrock 26.10) and lists the ghastling as one of the babies it works on. Use a second golden dandelion to let it grow again. The wandering trader sometimes sells them for 2 emeralds. If you’re short on emeralds, our Minecraft villager trades chart lists what every profession buys.

Harness recipe: how to craft a happy ghast harness

Row Left Middle Right
Top Leather Leather Leather
Middle Glass Wool (any color) Glass
Bottom Empty Empty Empty
  • Color: the harness matches the wool, so there are 16 colors. You can re-dye a harness by crafting it with any dye.
  • Equip: use the harness on an adult happy ghast. A dispenser can equip one too. Ghastlings can’t wear a harness.
  • Remove: use shears on the happy ghast. This only works when nobody is riding it and you aren’t sneaking.
  • Lure: an unharnessed happy ghast follows a player holding a harness or snowballs, so you can lead it to your base before you put the harness on.

How to ride a happy ghast

  • Mount: use the harnessed ghast. The first rider sits in front above its face and steers. Up to three more players take the side seats, filling them clockwise. The goggles drop over its eyes when someone is steering.
  • Controls: press forward to fly the way you’re looking, and press jump to go straight up. There’s no “down” key, so look down and press forward (or look up and press back). Strafe left or right to stay level.
  • Dismount: press sneak. You land on top of the ghast. While a player stands on it, the ghast stops moving and turns to face the nearest cardinal direction, so it works as a floating platform for building. You can even throw an ender pearl onto it.

How fast is a happy ghast?

Way to travel Speed (wiki, flat or level)
Happy ghast, level flight 3.611 m/s
Player walking 4.317 m/s
Player sprinting 5.612 m/s
Average horse 9.49 m/s
Elytra, gliding level 30.0 m/s

The Speed effect doesn’t affect a happy ghast. It’s a slow, social mount for building and sightseeing, not a racing mount. For long trips, an elytra is about eight times faster. In Java, the wiki measured climbing at about 1.75 m/s and descending at about 3.5 m/s.

Carrying boats, horses and friends with a happy ghast

Hold a lead attached to a boat or a large mob, sneak, and use the happy ghast to hang it underneath. Boats, chest boats, horses, donkeys, mules, camels and sniffers hang from four ropes, and other leashable mobs hang from one. There’s no limit on how many you can attach. Shears on the ghast cut every lead at once. A happy ghast’s lead stretches 16 blocks before it snaps, compared with 12 for other mobs.

The catch: mobs can ride along in a carried boat, but players can’t. If a player gets into the boat, the ghast can’t move it and the lead eventually snaps. The wiki notes that a player riding a pig or an unsaddled horse that’s hanging from the ghast does get carried.

Happy ghast stable: how home, healing and size work

Four mechanics from the wiki and Mojang’s notes shape a good stable:

  • Home spot: a happy ghast’s home resets to where it is whenever you put on or remove its harness, detach a lead, dismount, or stop tempting it. Unharnessed ghasts roam 64 blocks from home, and harnessed ones roam 32. Mojang’s Java notes add that a leashed ghast roams only 10 blocks.
  • Size: an adult’s hitbox is 4 x 4 x 4 blocks.
  • Healing: it heals 1 HP every 30 seconds. In rain or snow, or between Y 187 and 196 in the Overworld (cloud height), it heals 1 HP per second instead. The rain bonus needs open sky above it, and it can’t be touching water. Iron bars and signs overhead count as blocking the sky; string doesn’t.
  • Hazards: unlike normal ghasts, happy ghasts take fire and lava damage. Adults also drop riders underwater and can drown. Only ghastlings are safe underwater.

Our stable layout (GamingRoute’s suggestion, not an official design)

These tips are ours, built on the mechanics above. They aren’t from Mojang.

Part Our pick Why
Bay size 6 x 6 floor, 6 blocks tall, open on one side Room for the 4-block ghast plus a block of space on each side, so it doesn’t snag on walls
Parking A fence post in the bay, with the ghast leashed to it A leashed ghast roams only 10 blocks (Java), and detaching the lead later sets its home in the bay
Roof Open beams or a string net over the bay Keeps the faster rain healing; iron bars and signs would block it
Boarding deck A walkway level with the ghast’s top Step onto its back, and it freezes in place while you board (Mojang’s Agnes Larsson suggested building “Ghast Stations” like this during Minecraft LIVE)
Lighting Lanterns, no campfires or lava Happy ghasts aren’t fire-immune
Nursery One water block in a separate corner for the dried ghast Keeps the adult out of the water, where it would drop riders
Height A second stable at Y 187-196 if you build sky bases Parked ghasts heal 30 times faster at cloud height

If you have several ghasts, give each one its own harness color so it’s easy to tell whose is whose. Flying over your base at cloud height looks especially good with one of the packs in our best Minecraft shaders list. If you’re starting a new world for this, our best Minecraft seeds for 26.3 include several village starts that make a good base for a sky dock.

Happy ghast in Creative or with commands

In Creative, use a happy ghast spawn egg. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21.90 changelog gives the command for a baby as /summon happy_ghast ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ minecraft:spawn_baby. In Java, /summon minecraft:happy_ghast spawns an adult. Our Minecraft commands list covers how to turn on cheats first.

FAQ

How do you tame a happy ghast in Minecraft?

You don’t need to. Happy ghasts are passive from birth, and Mojang’s notes describe no taming step. Grow a ghastling into an adult, then put a harness on it to ride it.

How long does a happy ghast take to grow?

About 40 minutes from a fresh dried ghast: roughly 20 minutes to hydrate into a ghastling and 20 more to grow up. Snowballs shorten the second half.

Can you breed happy ghasts?

No. Each happy ghast comes from its own dried ghast, so craft more with ghast tears and soul sand.

How much health does a happy ghast have?

20 HP (10 hearts) in both editions. Bedrock’s first preview gave it 40 HP before Mojang lowered it. It’s immune to fall damage in Java.

Can a happy ghast fight?

No. Happy ghasts are passive, can’t shoot fireballs, and don’t panic when hit. Bring your own weapon for mobs near your stable; a Minecraft mace pairs well with jumping off a ghast’s back.

What happens to the harness if a happy ghast dies?

It drops the harness, plus 1-3 experience if a player or tamed wolf killed it.
