Quick answer
- Job blocks: an unemployed adult villager takes the profession of the free job site block it claims (lectern = librarian, composter = farmer, and so on; full list below).
- Levels: Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Master, at 0, 10, 70, 150 and 250 villager XP. Each level adds up to 2 trades in Java (3 slots in Bedrock).
- Librarian books: 5 to 64 emeralds plus a book. Level I costs 5-19 emeralds, treasure books like Mending cost double (10-38 at level I). Default librarians can roll any enchantment except Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst.
- Reroll: break and replace the job block while the villager is still a Novice that you have never traded with. After the first trade, its profession and trades are locked forever.
- Rebalance experiment: librarian books depend on the village biome (swamp sells Mending, snowy sells Silk Touch). It is still an experiment in 26.3; the cartographer and wandering trader parts became default in Java 1.21.5 and Bedrock 1.21.70.
- Cheaper prices: curing a zombie villager gives a permanent discount (first cure only), and Hero of the Village cuts prices 30% at level I, up to 55% at level V.

Not every villager offers every trade on its row: in Java a level with more than two options picks two at random (a Novice farmer picks 2 of 5), and in Bedrock each slot draws from its own pool. Nitwits (green coats), unemployed villagers and babies never trade.
Best villager trades (GamingRoute picks)
Our picks from the numbers above, not an official ranking: cheap farmable inputs and buys that are hard to get elsewhere.
- Librarian enchanted books (Mending above all): the only renewable way to pick a specific enchantment, at 5-64 emeralds each.
- Fletcher, 32 Sticks for 1 emerald: sticks come from any tree farm, and the trade has 16 uses per restock.
- Farmer, 6 Pumpkins or 4 Melons for 1 emerald: both regrow from stems, so a small farm feeds this forever.
- Cleric, Bottle o’ Enchanting for 3 emeralds (Master): XP in a bottle for repairing Mending gear.
- Toolsmith and Armorer enchanted diamond gear: a full enchanted diamond kit without mining a single diamond.
- Cartographer explorer maps: the Buried Trial Chambers Map is the shortcut to the heavy core you need for crafting the Minecraft mace.
Minecraft librarian trades: enchanted book prices
A default librarian can offer an enchanted book at Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman and Expert, so one villager can have up to four book trades. In Java each of those book trades has a 67% chance at the first three levels and 50% at Expert; in Bedrock it is 50% at Novice, Apprentice and Journeyman and 33% at Expert, because it shares a slot with other trades. Each book trade has 12 uses.
The enchantment is picked at random with equal chances from every enchantment except Soul Speed, Swift Sneak and Wind Burst, then a random level. By that rule, mace books like Density and Breach can appear, but Wind Burst still has to come from ominous vaults (our full Minecraft enchantments list shows where each one comes from). A librarian can offer the same book twice.
| Enchantment level | Normal book price (emeralds) | Treasure book price (e.g. Mending) |
|---|---|---|
| I | 5-19 | 10-38 |
| II | 8-32 | 16-64 |
| III | 11-45 | 22-64 |
| IV | 14-58 | 28-64 |
| V | 17-64 | 34-64 |
Per the wiki, the price runs from 2 + 3 x level to 6 + 13 x level (doubled for treasure books), capped at 64 before discounts. Every book trade also needs one plain book.
Master librarians no longer sell name tags. Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 replaced that trade with Red and Yellow Candles (3 emeralds, per the wiki), made name tags craftable from paper and any metal nugget, and moved them to the wandering trader for 1 emerald (Bedrock lists 5 in stock), according to Mojang’s Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 changelogs.
Villager Trade Rebalance: experimental vs default
Mojang started the rebalance as an experiment in Java 1.20.2 (snapshot 23w31a) and Bedrock 1.20.30. In its Bedrock preview notes, Mojang said a novice librarian selling “the best enchantment in the game” felt too random, and that “Players will have to work towards getting the best trades instead of relying on random chance.”
Where it stands in 26.3:
- Now default: the cartographer and wandering trader changes (seven biome-specific maps, better wandering trader prices and stock, and wandering traders buying items from you). They left the experiment in Java 1.21.5 and Bedrock 1.21.70.
- Still experimental: biome-locked librarian books and the armorer changes. Turn on “Villager Trade Rebalance” (Java) or “Villager Trade Rebalancing” (Bedrock) under Experiments when you create a world. Per the wiki, an experiment can’t be turned off once a world has it, and in Bedrock it disables achievements.

With the experiment on, Novice to Expert librarians draw “common” books from their biome’s pool at a random level, and every Master librarian sells that biome’s special book at a fixed level. Since Java 26.1, master librarians have three trades so the special book is always offered.
| Village biome | Special book (Master) | Common books |
|---|---|---|
| Desert | Efficiency III | Fire Protection, Thorns, Infinity |
| Plains | Protection III | Punch, Smite, Bane of Arthropods |
| Savanna | Sharpness III | Knockback, Curse of Binding, Sweeping Edge (Java only) |
| Snowy | Silk Touch | Aqua Affinity, Looting, Frost Walker |
| Taiga | Fortune II | Blast Protection, Fire Aspect, Flame |
| Jungle | Unbreaking II | Feather Falling, Projectile Protection, Power |
| Swamp | Mending | Depth Strider, Respiration, Curse of Vanishing |
Jungle and swamp villages don’t generate naturally, so for Unbreaking II and Mending you have to breed villagers or cure zombie villagers inside those biomes. The experiment also removes enchantments unique to the crossbow, fishing rod, trident, mace and spear from trading. For armorers, diamond armor costs some diamonds as well as emeralds, chainmail comes only from jungle and swamp armorers, savanna armorers sell cursed diamond armor cheaply, and taiga armorers swap one diamond piece for another. Our best Minecraft seeds for 26.3 include a trading-hall start with four taiga villages close together.
How to reroll villager trades (Java and Bedrock)
- Put the job block (a lectern, for a librarian) near an unemployed adult villager. When it claims the block, both show green particles.
- Open the trading screen and check the offers. Don’t trade yet.
- If the trades are bad, break the job block. A Novice villager that has never traded loses its profession.
- Place the block again and check the new offers. Repeat until you get the book or trade you want.
- Trade once. From then on, the villager keeps its profession and its trades for good.
Since Java 26.1, rerolls are still random but the sequence is set by the world seed (Mojang’s 26.1 notes). In Bedrock, an unemployed villager needs a bed before it claims a job block within 16 blocks, so keep a bed nearby if the reroll seems stuck.

Why villager trades lock, and how restocking works
Every trade has a use limit (often 12 or 16, just 3 for enchanted diamond gear). When you hit it, the trade shows a red X in Java or turns red in Bedrock. Villagers restock by working at their job block, up to twice a day. In Bedrock they also need to be linked to a bed. Heavy use raises a trade’s price at the next restock; leaving it alone brings the price back down.
How to get cheaper villager trades
- Cure a zombie villager: hit it with a Weakness potion (or arrow), then use a plain golden apple on it. Curing takes 3-5 minutes, and a villager that had a profession gives the curer a permanent discount. Since Java 1.20.2 and Bedrock 1.20.30, only the first cure counts, and nearby villagers give smaller discounts.
- Hero of the Village: win a raid to get 30% off at level I plus 6.25% per extra level (55% at level V), based on the original price. The cut is always at least 1 item, and no price drops below 1.
Java vs Bedrock villager trading differences
| Mechanic | Java 26.3 | Bedrock 26.60 |
|---|---|---|
| New trades per level | Up to 2, picked at random from that level’s pool (max 10 total) | Fixed slots, up to 3 per level (7-10 total) |
| Master librarian | Red and Yellow Candle (both) | One slot: Red Candle (75%) or Yellow Candle (25%) |
| Expert librarian Book and Quill trade | Asks for 1 (bug MC-248042) | Asks for 2 |
| Restocking | Works at job block, up to twice a day | Same, but needs a linked bed |
| Negative reputation | Can raise prices | Only cancels discounts |
| Farmer Suspicious Stew effect | One of six effects | Always Night Vision |
| Cake trade | 3 emeralds per cake due to a bug (fix listed for 26.4) | 1 emerald |
Java 26.3 also fixed new trades not appearing until you closed the menu: when a villager levels up, its new trades now show up in the trading screen you already have open, and discounts apply right away. FAQ
What is the best villager trade in Minecraft?
Our pick is the librarian’s enchanted books, especially Mending (10-38 emeralds at level I). For earning emeralds, the fletcher’s 32 sticks and the farmer’s 6 pumpkins or 4 melons are the cheapest inputs to farm.
How do you get Mending from a villager?
Without the experiment, reroll a Novice librarian’s lectern until a Mending book appears, then trade once to lock it. With the Villager Trade Rebalance experiment, only Master librarians from a swamp village sell Mending.
Why are my villager trades locked?
The trade hit its use limit. The villager restocks when it works at its job block, up to twice a day (in Bedrock it also needs a bed).
Can you reroll a villager after trading with it?
No. Once you trade, it keeps its profession and trades forever. Only Novice villagers you have never traded with can be rerolled by breaking their job block.
