How to breed Grumpyre on Cold Island
Grumpyre is a Single-Element Ethereal with the Shadow element, and Cold Island is where it’s born. It doesn’t follow the normal “add up the elements” rule. Instead, the wiki lists four combos, each pairing the Quad-Element Deedge with one of Cold Island’s four Triples:

Breeding doesn’t use up either parent, so once you own a Deedge and a Triple you can retry as often as you like. Getting there from scratch takes a few steps:
- Reach level 9. Deedge, Spunge, Thumpies and Bowgart all unlock at level 9 (Congle at level 7).
- Breed a Triple. Congle comes from Toe Jammer + Pango, the wiki’s best combo. Each Triple takes 12h (9h enhanced). For Bowgart, see our Bowgart breeding guide.
- Breed a Deedge. The best combo is Thumpies + Toe Jammer, because a failed try that gives Toe Jammer can be repeated almost at once. Spunge + Mammott is a close second. Deedge takes 1 day (18h enhanced) and needs a 3×3 space.
- Pair Deedge with your Triple and check the timer (table below).
- Keep the failures moving. Sell or feed spare Congles to Zynth, or keep a second Deedge to run two attempts at once if you own a second Breeding Structure.
You can swap any parent for its Rare version, the wiki notes, if you happen to own one. Wishing Torches also tilt results toward the rarest outcome of a pair. Big Blue Bubble doesn’t publish the odds.

The timer on the Breeding Structure tells you what’s in the egg before it hatches. These are the wiki’s Cold Island times for every result you can get from the four combos:

Incubation in the Nursery takes as long as breeding, so a default-speed Grumpyre holds the Nursery for another 36 hours. The Enhanced Breeding Structure and Enhanced Nursery each cut time by 25%.
How to breed Grumpyre on Ethereal Island
Ethereal Island is free and opens at level 4, but you can’t breed your first Grumpyre there. Single-Element Ethereals reach it in one of two ways, according to the wiki’s Teleporting and Ethereal Island pages:
- Teleport it: feed a Cold Island Grumpyre to level 15 (1,310,640 treats in total) and teleport it. It leaves Cold Island for good, turns back into an egg in the Ethereal Island Nursery, and restarts at level 1. Teleporting can’t be undone.
- Buy it: 1,500 Diamonds in the Ethereal Island Market (750 at 50% off).
Once it’s there, Grumpyre’s timer drops to 10h (7h 30m enhanced, 9h boosted, 6h 30m enhanced and boosted). You don’t breed a Grumpyre on Ethereal Island directly: you get one back as a “failed” result when you breed it with another Ethereal. The wiki’s best choice is Grumpyre + Rare Grumpyre, a 100% Grumpyre while Rare Grumpyre isn’t available. When Rare Grumpyre is on sale, the same pair can give a Rare instead.
Grumpyre is also one of the five Ethereal Singles you need for Ethereal Island’s Doubles. Pairing it with another Single can give these, though the wiki warns that success is never guaranteed:

- Mirror Cold Island: unlocks at level 20 for 200 Diamonds. The wiki says Mirror Islands are mechanically nearly identical to the originals.
- The Colossingum: teleport a Grumpyre at level 5, or buy one for 1,050 Diamonds.
- Shadow Islet: Grumpyre comes from Dish-Harmonizing a monster with the Dish-Harmonizer, and takes 10 hours to incubate.

Both only breed during limited sales. Neither was listed on the wiki’s live availability tracker at 07:45 UTC on November 2, 2026, when the current sale covered Plant Island Rares and Epics instead. According to the wiki’s Rare and Epic logs, these 2026 sales included them:

On Ethereal Island, the wiki recommends pairing Grumpyre with another Single Ethereal for the Rare, since a Double parent raises the chance of a slow Double-Element result. Once you have one Rare Grumpyre, breeding it with a Common Grumpyre keeps the results to Grumpyres while the Rare is on sale. - Rewards: placing your first Grumpyre completes a goal worth 50,000 coins and gives 375,000 XP on Cold Island.
- Coins: the wiki calls its Cold Island coin rate decent, comparable to Deedge, but not one of the island’s best earners. It sells for 750,000 coins.
- Shards: on Ethereal Island it’s a strong Shard earner, as all Single Ethereals are, slightly behind Reebro, Jeeode and Humbug.
- Ethereal Island progress: it’s required for Whisp, Arackulele, Boodoo and Kazilleon, so most players need at least one.
