God of War Laufey has been delayed. Santa Monica Studio moved the PS5 exclusive from February 16, 2027 to May 20, 2027, three months later than planned. The studio announced the delay in a statement on its official X account at about 17:00 UTC on November 4. It says it needs the extra time for “finishing touches.”
The statement is the only official word so far. It gives a new date and a reason, but says nothing about pre-orders, prices or the Collector Box. Below we cover what changed, what hasn’t, and what Sony still has to confirm.

God of War Laufey delayed: what the studio said
The X post is a single image with the caption “An update regarding God of War Laufey’s release date.” Polygon and Kotaku both print the full text. In it, the studio thanks fans for the excitement around “Faye’s journey through the Everywhen” since the June reveal. Then it says: “we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027.”
The reason is just one line. Santa Monica Studio says it will use the time “putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.” The statement doesn’t name a specific problem, and it gives no sign of a change in scope. It ends with a promise to “be back to share more updates soon.”
What happens to God of War Laufey pre-orders?
Sony hasn’t said yet. When we checked the US PlayStation Store page at 18:01 UTC, about an hour after the announcement, it still showed the old February 16, 2027 date. Pre-orders were open at the prices we recorded in October: $69.99 for the Standard Edition, $79.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition and $10 for the Deluxe upgrade. The PlayStation Direct listing for the $149.99 Collector Box, which doesn’t include the game, also still listed February 16.
Store pages usually catch up with a new date within a day or two. That’s an assumption, though, not something Sony has said. Until Sony confirms otherwise, treat the prices, editions and pre-order bonuses in our God of War Laufey release date, price and editions guide as unchanged. Only the date has moved.

What the delay means for the God of War timeline
Sony revealed Laufey at the end of its June 2 State of Play. Faye, Kratos’s late wife, is the lead, played by Deborah Ann Woll. Her story runs alongside God of War (2018) and Ragnarök, and it takes her to the Everywhen, which Sony calls the afterlife of the gods. Pre-orders opened on September 29, after a PlayStation Blog post confirmed the February date. The Collector Box followed on October 13.
With the delay, the first new God of War since 2022’s Ragnarök lands three months later. It moves out of the first quarter of 2027 and into late spring. Kotaku and Polygon also note that Santa Monica Studio has confirmed a new Kratos-led game is in development. Kotaku says that game ties into Laufey’s events. Sony hasn’t given that game a name or a date. For the studio’s history, our archive has a 2021 report on a second Santa Monica project made alongside Ragnarök.
Laufey isn’t the only big game to slip lately. FromSoftware recently delayed The Duskbloods to 2027. Our list of games coming out in 2027 has every confirmed date for the year.
What’s next
The things to watch are the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Direct listings switching to May 20, and any word from Sony on pre-orders or the Collector Box’s shipping date. Santa Monica Studio hasn’t said when its next update will come. We’ll update this story when Sony confirms more.
