The Borderlands series has sold more than 100 million units, Gearbox Software announced on November 2, and the studio is marking it with a free SHiFT code worth 20 Golden Keys in each of the five mainline games: Borderlands 1, 2, The Pre-Sequel, 3 and 4. The Borderlands golden keys code is CZKJJ-35RH6-T9K9C-9TJJT-SXRCT and, according to the official artwork, it expires on November 16, 2026.
The milestone came in a message to the Borderlands community posted on Steam and the official Borderlands channels, which also confirms more Borderlands 4 content for 2027 and a doubled charity drive starting November 6.

The code was posted by the official Borderlands accounts on X and Bluesky on November 2. The fine print on the image says it requires a copy of a participating game, is limited to one redemption per account and that terms apply. It does not give an expiry time or time zone, so redeem it before November 16 to be safe. We checked the official posts on November 3 at 11:40 UTC.
How to redeem a SHiFT code
SHiFT codes are entered in the Rewards section of Gearbox’s SHiFT website after you sign in to your SHiFT account and choose the platform you play on, and the keys then show up in-game the next time you log in, as Shacknews explains. In Borderlands 4, Golden Keys open the golden chests marked with a skull icon on the map. The same guide notes that the loot scales to your level and suggests saving keys until you reach the max level.
Borderlands sales: what 100 million means
“The Borderlands franchise has officially crossed 100 million units sold,” Gearbox wrote, adding that “there aren’t many franchises that have ever hit that milestone”. The count covers every game since the first Borderlands in 2009. Gearbox did not give a sales figure for any single game, including Borderlands 4, which launched in September 2025.
That context matters. Publisher Take-Two had called Borderlands 4’s launch softer than expected, partly because of its troubled PC performance, Eurogamer notes, and the promised Switch 2 version was delayed indefinitely earlier this year. Is there more Borderlands 4 content coming?
Yes. Gearbox says it has wrapped its Year 1 roadmap, which brought two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs and two new Vault Hunters, and that the team is “cooking hard on more Borderlands 4 content for next year.” Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges continue in the meantime. The studio is also “taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole” and asked players which characters and stories they want next, but said it will share plans “when the time is right”. No new game was announced.
The Hunt charity event and the 2K match
The community fundraiser The Hunt starts November 6. Last year it raised a record $118,995.80 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This time 2K Foundations and Gearbox will match every dollar donated up to that amount, which Gearbox says could push the total past $230,000. Details are on the official Borderlands Hunt site.
