Call of Duty has now earned more than $40 billion in lifetime revenue, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said on October 26, three days after Modern Warfare 4 launched. She announced the milestone on X at 18:35 UTC, calling MW4 “one of the most celebrated Call of Duty games in its 24-year history.” The official Call of Duty account reposted it.
It is the first franchise-wide revenue figure Microsoft has shared since it bought Activision, and it comes during a launch week the publisher is openly celebrating.

What Asha Sharma said about Call of Duty’s lifetime revenue
The whole statement is three sentences: Modern Warfare 4 is one of the series’ most celebrated entries, the franchise has reached “$40B in lifetime franchise revenue,” and she thanks the Activision team and the players. There was no blog post, earnings release or slide with it.
The post leaves several questions open:
- What counts: it doesn’t say whether the total covers only premium game sales, or also Warzone, Call of Duty: Mobile, in-game purchases and licensing.
- Gross or net: no accounting basis is given.
- MW4’s share: there is no sales or player number for Modern Warfare 4 itself.
Read it as a company-stated headline number, not an audited figure.
How the $40 billion compares with earlier numbers
The last public milestone came in June 2022. Activision told The Washington Post that the series had passed 425 million units sold and more than $30 billion in lifetime revenue, as Game World Observer reported at the time. If both figures are measured the same way, the franchise has added roughly $10 billion in about four years and four months. Neither company has confirmed that the two totals use the same method.
Sharma has made this kind of comparison before. In a June 2026 Entertainment Weekly interview, she said Call of Duty is “bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe,” according to Multiplayer.it’s report on the interview.

Why Microsoft is talking about it now
MW4 had a big first weekend. On October 26, the Call of Duty account pointed to Metacritic scores of 89 on PlayStation and 86 on PC. Digital Legends, the Activision studio that built the Switch 2 version, said MW4 brings Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ to Switch 2, the first Call of Duty on that console. Microsoft completed its Activision purchase in October 2023, as Bloomberg Law reported. The milestone puts a public number on what the series is worth to Xbox, in the same week that Xbox staff were reportedly included in a Microsoft voluntary exit offer.
For our take on the game, see our Modern Warfare 4 review on PS5. Activision has also said a new Call of Duty sub-franchise is in the works.

What’s next for Modern Warfare 4
The next content drop is close. Both Call of Duty and Infinity Ward said on October 26 that Shipment “arrives tomorrow,” which is October 27. Neither has given a time or said whether there will be a 24/7 playlist. Our MW4 maps list covers the full launch lineup, and the Season 1 roadmap has the dates announced so far. Microsoft’s next quarterly results cover July to September, so they end before MW4’s October 23 launch. Any official MW4 sales figure will most likely come after that. We’ll update this story if Microsoft or Activision breaks down the $40 billion number.
