The trending puzzle games on phones right now are led by Meowdoku!, Block Out! and Magic Sort!, which hold the top three spots of Apple’s US Top Free Games chart. Puzzle games fill most of that chart’s top 20, so here are the 12 worth knowing: what each one asks you to do, what the stores say about ads and in-app purchases, and how they rate on iPhone and Android. All chart positions, ratings and prices were checked at 16:20 UTC on October 18, 2026.

Quick answer
- The breakout hit: Meowdoku! (#1), a cat-themed logic grid that only launched on iOS in May 2026.
- Best for pure logic: Meowdoku!, CubeAway and Amaze GO!, which are all about working out the right order, not reflexes.
- Most relaxing: Vita Mahjong (large tiles, no time limits) and Colony Flow! (no timers, no lives).
- Biggest player bases: Block Blast! (1B+ downloads on Google Play), then Vita Mahjong and Amaze GO! (100M+ each).
- Cheapest way to drop ads: Vita Mahjong’s one-off “Ads Remove” purchase is $5.99 on iOS. Most others charge $7.99 to $9.99.
- Every game here is free and every one shows ads. Rotate Rings and Amaze GO! are the only two that list no in-app purchases on iPhone.

The subscriptions in Meowdoku! and Block Blast! are listed without a description of what they unlock, so don’t assume they remove every ad until the in-game store says so.
1. Meowdoku! (#1): the logic puzzle everyone is seeing ads for
Meowdoku! by Oakever Games puts one cat in each colored region of a grid. Cats can’t share a row or column, and they can’t touch, not even diagonally. If that sounds familiar, it’s the same rule set as LinkedIn’s daily Queens puzzle, only with cats. A wrong cat costs one of your three hearts, and there’s a fresh Daily Puzzle every day.
Fastest way to improve: start with the smallest region, because it has the fewest legal squares. Every time you place a cat, cross out its whole row, its whole column and the eight squares around it. The listing says the game plays offline.
The catch is the ads. Android Central’s write-up (September 20) loved the puzzles but counted a mandatory ad after almost every level, with no ad-free option on Android at the time. On iPhone, the store now lists Meowdoku Premium at $3.99 a week, $7.99 a month or $34.99 a year, and Premium Plus at $6.99 a week up to $69.99 a year.
2. Block Out! (#2): slide blocks to matching doors
Grand Games’ Block Out! has you slide colored blocks out through doors of the same color, with elevators and block generators reshaping the board as you go. Levels are timed (the store screenshots show a countdown). Its October update added a new area called Dino Chase. The store sells coins and boosters but lists no ad-removal item.
3. Magic Sort! (#3): the water-sort classic
Also from Grand Games, Magic Sort! is the bottle game: pour colored water until every bottle holds one color. You can only pour onto a matching top color, and only if there’s room. Plan backwards from the emptiest bottle, and use Undo before you trap yourself. Its latest update added 100 levels.
4. Vita Mahjong (#5): big tiles, no rush
Vita Mahjong is classic mahjong solitaire (match free pairs until the board is clear), built around large tiles, no time limits and offline play. With 1.8 million ratings on iOS and 6.4 million on Google Play, only Block Blast! comes close in sheer number of reviews. It’s also the cheapest one to go ad-free, with a $5.99 one-off purchase.

5. Bus Fever Party! (#6): parking-jam color matching
Bus Fever Party! mixes a parking jam with color sorting: free each bus from the jam and fill it with passengers of its color. It rates 4.7 on iPhone but only 4.0 on Google Play, the widest gap here, so Android players may want to read recent reviews first. An Ad-Free Pass costs $7.99.
6. Rotate Rings (#7): line up the gaps
Released in August 2026, Rotate Rings asks you to spin interlocked rings until their gaps line up and they come apart, layer by layer. It’s the newest game in the top ten, rated 4.8 on both stores. The iPhone version is free with ads and no in-app purchases, while Google Play lists in-app purchases.
7. Block Blast! (#8): the long-running 8×8 favorite
Block Blast! from Hungry Studio is the veteran here, with over a billion Google Play downloads. Drop the pieces onto an 8×8 board and clear full rows or columns. There’s an endless high-score mode, an Adventure mode and daily puzzles. Combos score big, so keep the middle of the board open for the larger pieces instead of filling it up early.
8. Smash Fest! (#9): aim, fire, smash
Flow Games’ Smash Fest! is the odd one out: a physics game where you set your cannon’s angle and power to smash jars and stones. We couldn’t find an official Android version on Google Play on October 18. Apps with similar names there come from other developers, so check the publisher name before you install. No Ads costs $9.99 on iOS.
9. CubeAway (#10): arrows on a 3D cube
CubeAway – 3DPuzzle by GOODROID covers all six sides of a cube in arrows. Tap them out in an order where none hits another. Check every side of the cube for arrows with a clear path before you tap anything. Its September update added a Cube Pass and Leagues. No Ads is $7.99.

10. Sand Blocks: Drop Puzzle (#14): the newest climber
Rollic’s Sand Blocks uses real sand physics: pull colored sand into matching Tetris-shaped pits before the timer runs out. It’s still much smaller on Android (100K+ downloads, 4.3 stars from 1.8K ratings) than on iPhone.
11. Colony Flow! (#16): ants, slots and pixel art
Colony Flow! gives you a stack of ant boxes and five open slots. Each box releases ants that carry away every matching block in a pixel picture. The developer’s own tip is the key one: don’t open a color that has nothing left to carry, because it clogs a slot. There are no timers or lives, and the October 17 update added a Spooky Event. No Ads is $7.99.
12. Amaze GO! (#17): calm arrow escapes
Oakever’s second hit, Amaze GO!, is a minimalist arrow puzzle: send each arrow out along its lane in the right order. It plays offline, shows ads, and lists no in-app purchases on either store. It’s rated 4.9 from 419K ratings on Google Play.
What we left out
Apple’s Puzzle chart also features “Mahjong Clash” and “Mahjong Rumble”, both subtitled “Win Real Cash”. They’re real-money games, not casual puzzles, so they aren’t on this list. Merge games like Township and Gossip Harbor were left out too, since they’re closer to tycoon games. Our best tycoon games on mobile list covers that side.
Want something with no ads at all? Our best offline mobile games list includes paid puzzle picks like Monument Valley and Mini Metro. If you’re more into match-3, start with our games like Candy Crush roundup. Life-sim fans can try the games like BitLife list.
FAQ
How do you play Meowdoku?
Place exactly one cat in each colored region. No two cats can share a row or column, or touch each other, including diagonally. Double-tap a square to place a cat. Three wrong guesses end the level.
How do I get rid of ads in Meowdoku?
On iPhone, the App Store lists Meowdoku Premium subscriptions from $3.99 a week, but the listing doesn’t spell out what Premium includes. Check the in-game store before you pay. Android Central also notes that hints can be earned back by watching ads.
What is the number one puzzle game on the App Store right now?
Meowdoku! was #1 on Apple’s US Top Free Games chart and its Puzzle chart when we checked at 16:20 UTC on October 18, 2026. Block Out! and Magic Sort! were #2 and #3. Charts update constantly, so the order can change within hours.
Are these puzzle games free?
Yes. All 12 are free to download, and all of them show ads. The only paid items are optional in-app purchases (coins, boosters, passes or ad removal).
