Royal Kingdom is Dream Games’ second match-3 game and plays almost exactly like Royal Match: same swipe-to-match levels, same power-up combos, same “+5 moves” pressure. The real differences sit around the puzzles. You build a whole kingdom instead of redecorating a castle, King Richard replaces King Robert as the hero, and every ten levels you get harder Kingdom levels where your matches attack the Dark King’s castle. Here’s Royal Kingdom vs Royal Match side by side, plus how to get off to a fast start in Royal Kingdom.
Quick answer
- Same studio, same core: both are made by Dream Games, and the analysts at Naavik describe Royal Kingdom as “effectively Royal Match 2.0”, with the same core gameplay and the same boosters.
- The big new thing: Kingdom levels. According to Naavik, there are two of these “attack the Dark King” stages in every ten levels, and they are harder than normal hard levels.
- Meta game: Royal Match has you restore King Robert’s castle room by room; Royal Kingdom has you build districts such as Parliament Square, the University and the Princess Tower (App Store listing).
- Power-up names change, rules don’t: Royal Match’s Propeller, TNT and Light Ball are the Spinner, Dynamite and Electro Ball in Royal Kingdom, and the combos work the same way.
- Top tip: save power-ups for the Kingdom levels’ armored targets. Some, like the Metal Tower, can only be destroyed with power-ups.

What’s different in Royal Kingdom
A bigger meta: districts instead of rooms
Royal Match’s loop is simple: beat levels, earn stars, spend them on castle tasks. Royal Kingdom keeps the task button but widens the map. You work with the Builder to unlock districts, and the latest update (October 2026) added a new one, the Cistern, alongside 100 new levels, a new Rubber Duck item and a new enemy called the Pounder, according to the patch notes on Google Play. A BlueStacks beginner guide says levels pay out potions, which you spend on district-building tasks.
Game designer Tom Froud, speaking to Mobilegamer.biz during the soft launch, put the difference neatly: every addition in Royal Kingdom makes a big visual change, while “sometimes in Royal Match all you get is a vase.”
Kingdom levels: match-3 meets castle siege
This is the part Royal Match players haven’t seen. In a Kingdom level, the board sits under a battlefield. Matches made in front of an enemy damage it, and power-ups hit harder. The castle only becomes vulnerable once its towers are gone, as Apple’s App Store editors explain in their Royal Kingdom feature. Naavik compares the structure to Empires & Puzzles, where your matches fire at targets above the board.
Early versions of Royal Kingdom were built around PvP attacks on other players, Coin Master style. Naavik reports that Dream Games dropped that loop in April 2024, reset player progress and switched to the current player-versus-Dark-King format before the global launch. So older guides that talk about raiding other players’ kingdoms describe a version of the game that no longer exists.
Harder and stingier, by design
Naavik’s analysis of the soft launch found Royal Kingdom harder than Royal Match and less generous with coins, while giving more event tokens per ten levels. The extra difficulty comes mostly from the Kingdom levels, which the analysts call ideal for pushing players to the “out of moves” screen. Expect to lean on events, team help and saved boosters more than you did in Royal Match.
Power-ups and boosters compared
If you’ve played Royal Match, you already know how to make every power-up in Royal Kingdom. Only the names change. The combo rules listed in BlueStacks’ Royal Kingdom booster guide match Pocket Gamer’s Royal Match combo list one to one: Rocket + Rocket clears a row and a column, Rocket + Dynamite/TNT clears three rows and three columns, and two Electro Balls/Light Balls clear the whole board and remove one layer from every obstacle.
| How to make it | Royal Match | Royal Kingdom | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 in a line | Rocket | Rocket | Clears a full row or column |
| 4 in a 2×2 square | Propeller | Spinner | Flies to a random target and clears around its take-off spot |
| L or T shape | TNT | Dynamite | Clears everything within two tiles |
| 5 in a line | Light Ball | Electro Ball | Clears every item of one color |

Boosters line up the same way. The Royal Match wiki lists Rocket, TNT and Light Ball as pre-level boosters, plus four in-level boosters: Royal Hammer (one tile), Arrow (a row), Cannon (a column) and Jester Hat (shuffles the board). BlueStacks lists Royal Kingdom’s set as Rocket, Dynamite and Electro Ball before a level, then Hammer, Battle Ram (a row), Drill (a column), Wizard Hat (recolors items to create power-ups) and Bomber Plane (drops three bombs). That guide was written during the soft launch, so check your own booster bar: Dream Games adds and renames items in updates.
Royal Kingdom tips for beginners
- Read the goal before your first swipe. Apple’s editors warn that a board with only a few obstacles can hide a goal like spreading jelly across every tile. Plan for the real goal, not the obvious one.
- Work from the bottom. Matches low on the board make more tiles fall, so you get more chance cascades and free power-ups. BlueStacks and Pocket Gamer both give this tip, for Royal Kingdom and Royal Match respectively.
- Don’t chase every combo. Spending several moves to line up an Electro Ball with another power-up can cost you the level. Apple’s feature recommends steady, efficient matches over forcing one big combo.
- Use the Hammer to set up combos. If two Electro Balls are close but not touching, hammering the tile between them can drop them together for a board-clearing double. A merged pair also clears all the Ivy on the board, according to Apple’s feature.
- Think twice before buying +5 moves. If the board is still full of obstacles, five more moves usually just delay the fail. Restart and keep your coins for a level you’re one or two moves from winning.
- Protect your win streak. According to BlueStacks, consecutive wins stack free boosters at the start of your next level. Game designer Tom Froud also told Mobilegamer.biz that the streak system gets more emphasis here than in Royal Match. On a hard level, one careful attempt beats three rushed ones.
- Join a team early. BlueStacks says teams unlock at level 21, hold up to 50 players and let you ask teammates for lives. You get 5 lives at most, and each one refills in 30 minutes.
- Bank boosters for Kingdom levels. Boosters don’t use a move and work in every level type, including Kingdom levels, according to BlueStacks. Those levels are the hardest in each ten-level stretch, so that’s where saved boosters pay off.
Kingdom level enemies and how to beat them
Kingdom levels are where most Royal Match veterans get stuck. Here are the main enemies, with descriptions from BlueStacks’ Kingdom items guide and Apple’s feature.
| Enemy | What it does | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Castle and towers | The castle can’t be damaged while towers guard it | Clear the towers first, then focus everything on the castle |
| Metal Tower | Immune to normal matches | Only power-ups hurt it, so build Rockets and Dynamite for it |
| Guard | Raises its shield after every move | Don’t waste moves on it; build a power-up elsewhere and hit it when it’s open |
| Scarecrow | Builds a wall of pumpkins every four moves | Take it out early, before the walls pile up |
| Water Tower | Slides left and right after each move | Rockets that cover a whole row or column are easier to aim at it than single matches |
| Crystal | Shields other targets | Break the crystals first; shielded targets take no damage until then |
| Crate | Releases an Electro Ball when opened | Open it early, then save the ball for a combo |
The Dark Witch also throws obstacles onto the board in some levels. Apple’s advice is the same as for the Guard: keep building power-ups on the open part of the board instead of fighting every obstacle as it lands.
Should you play Royal Kingdom or Royal Match?
Pick Royal Match if you want the calmer game: no Kingdom levels, a cozy castle to decorate and a huge level backlog (new levels arrive every two weeks, according to its store notes). Pick Royal Kingdom if you’ve run out of Royal Match levels or want more tension. The Kingdom levels add a strategy layer, and building districts feels like real progress. Plenty of players run both, since they’re separate apps with separate events. This Halloween, Royal Kingdom’s Google Play page lists a Spooky Collection season and the Kingdom Pass running until October 29, while Royal Match has Pumpkin Party and Spooky Rise until November 2.
