Capcom’s Street Fighter film won its opening weekend with an estimated $31M in the US, below Resident Evil’s $60.2M and Mortal Kombat II’s $38.5M debuts.

Paramount, Legendary and Capcom’s live-action Street Fighter opened at No. 1 at the North American box office this weekend with an estimated $31 million from 3,575 theaters, Deadline reports. With $20.1 million from 65 international markets, the film’s worldwide opening comes to an estimated $51.1 million. That’s enough to win the weekend, but it’s below what the studios were hoping for, and about half of what Capcom’s other 2026 movie, Resident Evil, made in its first three days.

All Street Fighter movie box office figures here are studio estimates reported on Sunday, October 18. Studios report actual grosses on Monday, and those can come in a little higher or lower.

Street Fighter movie box office: the opening weekend numbers

Figure Estimate
Domestic 3-day (Oct 16-18) $31M (Fri $13M incl. $4M previews, Sat $10.8M, Sun $7.2M)
International (65 markets) $20.1M
Worldwide opening $51.1M (about $70M was hoped for)
IMAX share $7.7M globally, $5.4M of it in North America
Net production cost $82M, co-financed by Legendary and Capcom
CinemaScore B-

According to Deadline’s global report, the PG-13 film was No. 1 in the UK ($3.3M), Mexico ($1.8M) and Australia ($1.6M), but only fifth in Japan, Capcom’s home market, with $875,000. Its audience skewed older: men over 35 made up 45% of US ticket buyers, and kids under 12 with their parents only 11%. Deadline’s sources still expect the $82 million production to turn out fine once home and streaming sales are counted.

How Street Fighter compares with other video game movie openings

Domestic three-day opening weekends for recent game adaptations, from The Numbers. Street Fighter’s figure is the Sunday estimate; the others are final.

Film Opened Domestic opening weekend
A Minecraft Movie Apr 2025 $162.8M
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Apr 2026 $131.7M (Fri-Sun; $190.8M including its Wednesday start)
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Dec 2025 $64.0M
Resident Evil Sep 2026 $60.2M
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Dec 2024 $60.1M
Mortal Kombat II May 2026 $38.5M
Street Fighter Oct 2026 $31M (estimate)
Mortal Kombat Apr 2021 $23.3M (also streaming on HBO Max at launch)

Street Fighter opened about 19% below Mortal Kombat II, the closest comparison, which went on to $79.8 million in North America. Mortal Kombat II also earned a better CinemaScore (B against Street Fighter’s B-). Against the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme film, the reboot already looks like a win: that one opened to $6.8 million and ended with $33.4 million domestic (not adjusted for inflation), a total the new movie nearly matched in three days.

Two Capcom movies in theaters at once

The most telling comparison is in the same top 10. Sony and Constantin’s Resident Evil, a reboot directed by Zach Cregger with an original story, took seventh place in its fifth weekend with $5.5 million. That brings it to $148.5 million domestic and $361.2 million worldwide. Polygon’s Tomas Franzese argues that the gap points to an original story working better than Street Fighter’s fan-service roster of familiar fighters. It’s a fair reading, though the two films are different genres released a month apart, so the comparison isn’t exact. Capcom also brought Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 to Switch 2 this month (here’s how those ports compare on price and performance).

What it means for Street Fighter 6

The movie arrives with Street Fighter 6 in good shape. Capcom’s Platinum Titles list puts it at 7.2 million units sold as of June 30, 2026, not far behind Street Fighter V’s 8 million. For anyone the movie tempts into trying the game, two things are worth knowing:

  • Movie EX colours: free codes give Zangief, E. Honda, Dhalsim and Chun-Li colours based on their film costumes (Nintendo Life has the codes). Guile’s colour was a Twitch viewing reward, and Capcom’s terms say his code works from October 15, 2026 until January 15, 2027. You need to own the character’s Outfit 2, and you redeem codes under Options, then Input Event Code.
  • A cheap way in: on Steam, Street Fighter 6 is 60% off at $15.99 (normally $39.99) in a “special promotion” that ends October 21 (checked October 18, 2026 UTC).

Capcom isn’t the only publisher putting its games on screen. CD Projekt has Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 arriving on Netflix on October 20, and a Cyberpunk movie in development.

What’s next

Actual weekend grosses are due Monday, October 19, but the second weekend is the real test. For comparison, Mortal Kombat II fell 65% in its second weekend, according to The Numbers, and A24’s documentary You Can See Everything, which opened second with $15 million, expands wider next weekend. Capcom’s Guile movie code stays valid until January 15, 2027. For more films and shows based on games, see our list of game adaptations worth watching.
