CD Projekt: Cyberpunk Movie Is a New Story, Hadar Still Early

CD Projekt’s Michał Nowakowski says the Paramount Cyberpunk movie tells a new story, and Project Hadar has its world set but isn’t in pre-production yet.

The live-action Cyberpunk movie that CD Projekt Red is making with Paramount Pictures will tell a new story set in the Cyberpunk world, not a retelling of the game, joint CEO Michał Nowakowski told Polish business agency PAP Biznes in an interview published on October 15. In the same conversation he gave a status update on Project Hadar, the studio’s first original IP: its world is now designed, but the game is still not in pre-production.

The interview ran in Polish across two PAP Biznes articles; the quotes below are our own translations.

What CD Projekt said about the Cyberpunk movie

Nowakowski explained that the film moved to Paramount after an earlier deal lapsed: “Our agreement with Anonymous Content expired, and in the meantime an opportunity came up to work with Paramount Pictures, so we decided to take the live-action Cyberpunk project forward in a new form.”

On the story, his wording was careful: “For now, we can only say that we definitely don’t want to make a screen adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be the game’s story translated one to one.” More details will come when both sides are ready, he said.

That matches the approach CD Projekt took with the anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, whose second season arrives on Netflix on October 20. Deadline broke the Paramount news on October 8, naming Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura; no writer, director or cast is announced.

Where English headlines went further than the quote

English coverage from IGN and Polygon got the movie quote right, but IGN wrote that work on Project Hadar “has officially begun”, which is true only in a narrow sense: in the original Polish, Nowakowski stressed that the team has started on the game “although it’s still not pre-production”. Headlines saying the film “won’t adapt” the game also need a footnote: it is still built on CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk world. What Nowakowski ruled out is a one-to-one retelling of the game’s story.

Project Hadar: world vision locked, prototypes only

In the second PAP Biznes article, Nowakowski said the world-building stage of Hadar is finished: “It has been our biggest undertaking so far, and it took us a good few years, but at this point we can say we have a coherent vision of this world and its key elements.” He went on: “Small prototypes are already being made, and gameplay elements are being tested.”

That is a step on from September, when investor relations VP Karolina Gnaś said on the H1 2026 earnings call that Hadar was “still in the conceptual phase” with over 30 people, rising to up to 50 by the end of 2026. CD Projekt is already planning licensing around Hadar’s universe, as it did for The Witcher and Cyberpunk.

Witcher 3 sales, Witcher 4 platforms and physical copies

Nowakowski said The Witcher 3 is selling above pre-remaster levels even after the autumn sales ended. Steam concurrent players passed 120,000 on the remaster’s September 29 launch day and hit a new record of nearly 138,000 on October 4, according to PAP. He confirmed The Witcher 4 is focused on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and said CD Projekt still wants to release boxed editions, even if a box ends up holding a code and extras rather than a disc. On Project Sirius, he said the recent team-size adjustment happened because the team “simply grew beyond” the stage the multiplayer project is currently at.

What’s next

Edgerunners Season 2 on October 20 is the next Cyberpunk milestone, and Nowakowski said the first season in 2022 kept game sales above pre-premiere levels for months afterwards. (For how far the game has come since launch, see what changed in Cyberpunk 2077.) Movie casting and Hadar’s move into pre-production are the two updates to watch; we’ll track both on our daily gaming news live page.
