A Retail Tycoon 2 manager sits at a desk and buys stock for you whenever a shelf isn’t full. The “Amount to Stock” slider (50% to 200%) sets how much stock they aim to own compared with what your shelves can display, and the spending limit caps how fast they buy, rising 10% per level up to +40% at level 5. If your manager isn’t buying, it’s almost always one of five things: no reachable desk, cash at $0, orders stuck at the loading dock, the item isn’t on a display shelf, or the worker is on break or stuck.
This page goes deeper than the managers section of our Retail Tycoon 2 guide with the best things to sell. Mechanics come from Secondhand Studios’ official Retail Tycoon 2 changelog and the two community wikis. Checked November 1, 2026 UTC against version 1.8.2.8, the latest patch (April 8, 2026).

Retail Tycoon 2 manager quick answer
- What they do: automatically buy goods for every item type on your display shelves, as long as your cash is above $0.
- What you need: a manager ($400 to hire) and a reachable desk ($3,000 in the Retail Tycoon Wiki’s furniture list).
- Amount to Stock: 100% means “enough to fill my shelves once”. Everything above 100% sits in storage for restockers. The default is 125%.
- Instant delivery: off by default. When on, goods skip the loading dock but cost 25% more (wiki figure), which turns economy cars into a loss.
- Spending limit: each manager can only spend so much per few seconds (about $1,500 per 10 seconds when managers launched in 2021). Levels add +10%, +20%, +30% and +40%.
- Not buying? Work through the troubleshooting table below. Start with the loading dock.
How do managers work in Retail Tycoon 2?
Managers arrived in beta update 0.6.5 (May 22, 2021). The official notes describe them as workers “that buy inventory for your store automatically” from a desk.
The loop works like this:
- The manager checks your display shelves. The Retail Tycoon Wiki says they buy “when a shelf in the store is not full”.
- They order enough of each item to reach your Amount to Stock target. When the order goes through, their desk monitor shows something like “Ordered Fruit x12”.
- With instant delivery off, the order lands at the loading dock, and you or a delivery driver haul it to your store’s unloading dock (official notes, update 1.2).
- Restockers move goods from storage shelves onto display shelves. Without at least one storage shelf, restockers can’t work.
A full setup is a manager plus restockers plus either delivery drivers or instant delivery. While the manager is filling up to the target for the first time, your profit will look low. The Retail Tycoon Wiki says that’s normal: the money is going into stock, and it comes back as the stock sells.

Amount to Stock: what the percentages mean
The slider is a percentage of your display capacity, not of your storage. The Retail Tycoon 2 Wiki’s example: with four shelves showing one large furniture item each, a 125% target means the manager keeps all four on display plus one spare in storage. The official notes say managers originally aimed for 150%, dropped to 125% in beta 0.6.6.1 (June 1, 2021), and became adjustable up to 200% in 1.3.3 (November 19, 2021).
Here’s how that plays out for an item type whose display shelves hold 40 units in total:
| Amount to Stock | Units the manager aims to own | On display | In storage | What it’s for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50% (minimum) | 20 | 20 | 0 | Shelves stay half empty. Only for a store you’re winding down |
| 100% | 40 | 40 | 0 | No buffer: shelves empty out between orders |
| 125% (default) | 50 | 40 | 10 | Small buffer for fast deliveries |
| 150% | 60 | 40 | 20 | Middle ground while you hire your first drivers |
| 200% (maximum) | 80 | 40 | 40 | A full second set waiting in storage while trucks are on the road |
Anything above 100% needs room on your storage shelves. Each storage shelf costs $500, adds 500 storage and has -10 decoration (Retail Tycoon Wiki), so keep them in a back room behind an employee-only door.
How much should you stock?
Our main guide already lists the wiki’s ranges (125-135% with instant delivery, 185-200% with delivery drivers), so here’s how to choose inside those ranges:
- Go to the top of the range if customers keep thinking “I couldn’t find everything I wanted”. That’s the in-game sign that shelves are running dry.
- Drop toward 100-110% when you’re saving for a big purchase such as land or a vehicle. The wiki advises lowering the target “slightly” when you want cash, because less money is tied up in boxes.
- Raise it after adding shelves. The percentage scales with display space, so ten new shelves at 200% means a lot of new stock at once. If cash is tight, step the slider up gradually.
Instant delivery: when it’s worth 25% more
Instant delivery has been off by default since update 1.2 (September 3, 2021). The wikis say it adds 25% to the purchase price. That cost comes straight out of your profit per unit, so the lower an item’s margin, the more it hurts. Prices below come from the community wiki’s profit table (the same one used in our main guide), before any money-tree bonus:
| Item | Buy / sell | Profit per unit | Buy price with instant delivery | Profit with instant delivery | Profit kept |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beverages (soda) | $8 / $18 | $10 | $10 | $8 | 80% |
| Toys | $20 / $45 | $25 | $25 | $20 | 80% |
| Large furniture | $450 / $1,000 | $550 | $562.50 | $437.50 | 80% |
| Exercise equipment | $560 / $1,200 | $640 | $700 | $500 | 78% |
| Small electronics | $400 / $700 | $300 | $500 | $200 | 67% |
| Jewelry | $850 / $1,200 | $350 | $1,062.50 | $137.50 | 39% |
| Economy cars | $13,000 / $15,000 | $2,000 | $16,250 | -$1,250 | Loss |
The rule of thumb: instant delivery only makes sense for items with a margin well above 25%. Toys, soda, furniture and exercise equipment keep about 80% of their profit, which is fine early on when you don’t have trucks yet. Jewelry loses most of its profit, and economy cars lose money on every sale (the Retail Tycoon Wiki uses this exact example). Turn instant delivery off before you stock those items, and use delivery drivers instead.
Retail Tycoon 2 manager spending limit
When managers launched, the official notes said “each manager is limited to buying about $1500 worth of items per 10s”. Secondhand Studios hasn’t posted a new base figure since. According to the Retail Tycoon Wiki, you can edit how much a manager spends in the employee window, and the cap rises as they level up. Both wikis list the same level bonuses:
| Manager level | XP bar (wiki) | Spending limit bonus | If the 2021 base still applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | None | About $1,500 per 10 s |
| 2 | 400 | +10% | About $1,650 per 10 s |
| 3 | 1,600 | +20% | About $1,800 per 10 s |
| 4 | 6,400 | +30% | About $1,950 per 10 s |
| 5 | Max | +40% | About $2,100 per 10 s |
What this means in practice:
- The limit applies to each manager separately. A big store that empties shelves faster than one manager can buy is the case for a second manager. Desks have had two seats since update 1.3.
- Expensive goods take patience. At the 2021 figure, one $13,000 car is more than a level 1 manager can spend in a single 10-second window. Since update 1.3.2 (November 2021), managers no longer “wait forever to save up for expensive things”, but big-ticket orders still go through more slowly than cheap ones.
- Don’t fire a levelled manager to save money. Since update 1.0.2, you can put workers on break instead. They don’t work, get half pay, and keep their XP and hiring cost. You’d lose both if you fired them.
- Watch your cash for the first few minutes. The Retail Tycoon 2 Wiki notes managers keep buying while your money is above $0, even if you can’t afford the whole order. The Retail Tycoon Wiki warns this can push a low-profit store toward bankruptcy.

Retail Tycoon 2 manager not working: fixes
Run through these in order. The first three cause most “my manager isn’t buying” complaints.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Shelves empty, but the desk monitor shows orders | Instant delivery is off and the orders are waiting at the loading dock | Collect it with your truck, hire a delivery driver, or turn instant delivery on for high-margin goods |
| Manager stands around or never reaches the desk | No desk, or the path to it is blocked | Place a desk ($3,000) with a clear path. Workers can use employee-only doors, customers can’t (0.6.9) |
| No orders at all | Your cash is at $0 or below | Sell some stock or lower the Amount to Stock until cash is positive again |
| One item never gets reordered | It’s only in storage, not on a display shelf, or it needs a game pass | Put at least one shelf of it on display. Military goods need Military Clearance (managers stopped buying pass-locked items in 1.3.1.1) |
| Manager stopped after you rebuilt the store | Worker stuck or on break | Check the worker menu: take them off break, or use the respawn option for stuck workers (added in 1.8.1, January 2025) |
| Orders arrive but shelves stay empty | No restockers, or no storage shelf for them to use | Hire restockers and place at least one storage shelf near the unloading dock |
| Expensive items never arrive | Spending limit too low for the item | Give it time, level the manager, or add a second manager |
One more check from the official notes: since 1.2.0.3, managers count goods sitting in your own truck. If you bought a load and left it in the truck, the manager treats that stock as already owned and won’t order more. Unload at your store’s unloading dock and the orders will start again.
Delivery drivers: the partner managers need
Delivery drivers (update 1.2) are what let a manager run without instant delivery. The official notes say each driver must be assigned a truck and needs an unloading dock with enough room to park it. Drivers cost $300 to hire, and they deliver faster as they level up (+5% per level, up to +20% at level 5, per the wikis).
Truck size decides how much a driver brings per trip. These figures come from the Retail Tycoon 2 Wiki’s delivery table:
| Truck | Capacity | Price | Items per minute (wiki estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup truck | 300 | $5,000 | 150 |
| Small box truck | 1,200 | $17,500 | 600 |
| Large box truck | 2,500 | $30,000 | 1,200 |
| Semi | 6,000 | $60,000 | 3,000 |
| Electric Semi | 6,000 | 299 Robux game pass | 4,500 |
A good order to set things up, based on these mechanics: hire a manager with instant delivery on while you only sell high-margin goods, then buy a bigger truck, hire a driver, switch instant delivery off and raise the target toward 185-200%.

FAQ
How do you get a manager desk in Retail Tycoon 2?
Open build mode and place a Desk from the furniture items. The Retail Tycoon Wiki lists it at $3,000. Then hire a manager from the worker menu. The wikis say managers need an accessible desk to buy anything, so leave a clear walking path to it.
What is the best manager setting in Retail Tycoon 2?
Use 125% with instant delivery while you sell only cheap, high-margin goods. Once you have delivery drivers and enough storage, switch instant delivery off and use 185-200%. Lower the target a bit when you’re saving cash.
Why is my Retail Tycoon 2 manager spending so much money?
They’re filling your shelves and storage up to the Amount to Stock target, and with instant delivery on they pay 25% extra. Lower the percentage, switch instant delivery off, or remove item types you don’t need. The spending settles down once the target is reached.
