There are three Shift at Midnight endings in Story Mode: True Ending, Grave Decision and Empty Home. Which one you get comes down to two checks at the end of the 13-shift story: whether you call Sheriff Clyde after Shift 12, and whether your personal funds reach the $250 your pet’s surgery costs. Below are the exact conditions, how to bank the money, and the official answers on player count, crossplay and platforms.
Spoiler warning: the endings sections describe who lives and who dies in each outcome. The player count, crossplay and platform sections further down are spoiler-free.

Quick answer
- True Ending: do not call Clyde after Shift 12, and have at least $250 in personal funds when the vet asks for payment after Shift 13. Clyde and your pet both live.
- Grave Decision: call Clyde after Shift 12. The surgery is paid and your pet lives, but Clyde dies. Your own balance does not matter.
- Empty Home: do not call Clyde and finish below $250. Clyde lives, your pet does not.
- How many players: solo or up to 3 players in online co-op, as designed. A day-one patch added an optional lobby size of up to 6, which the developer says is outside how the game was designed.
- Crossplay: only between Xbox consoles and the Xbox/Game Pass version on PC. Steam players can only play with Steam players.

All 3 Shift at Midnight endings at a glance
The three ending names match three hidden achievements on the game’s official Steam page (Grave Decision, Empty Home and True Ending; the game has 10 achievements in total). The conditions below are the ones reported by guides that reached each ending: Destructoid, AllThings. How, GamesHorizon and Player.One. All four agree on them.
| Ending | Call Clyde after Shift 12? | Personal funds at the vet | Clyde | Pet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| True Ending | No | $250 or more | Lives | Lives |
| Grave Decision | Yes | Any amount | Dies | Lives |
| Empty Home | No | Below $250 | Lives | Dies |
Some guides call the bad ending “Empty House”. The achievement on Steam is named Empty Home.
How the endings are decided: the $250 surgery and the Clyde call
The setup comes from the developer. In a July 8 Steam post, solo developer Bun Muen explained that you adopt a pet before your first shift (a cat, a husky, a puppy or a goose), that it gets sick, and that you take the Midnight Mart job to pay for its medicine, which it needs within your first 3 shifts.
From there, guides describe the same sequence:
- After Shift 10, the vet says your pet needs surgery costing $250 (Destructoid, AllThings. How and GamesHorizon all place this after the tenth shift).
- After Shift 12, you get the option to call Sheriff Clyde, with the promise that the surgery will be covered if he visits the store. This is the point of no return.
- Shift 13 is the final night. After it, the vet checks your personal funds, unless you called Clyde.
AllThings. How adds a useful detail: the Shift 13 payout lands before the vet checks your balance, so you don’t need the full $250 at the moment the Clyde choice appears. In the runs it describes, players finished at $252 and $257. A small gap can close on the last night, but a run that was about $75 short was judged too far behind and called Clyde instead.
Personal funds are not store money
This is the most common way to miss the True Ending. The game tracks three different numbers, and only one pays for the surgery:
| Balance | What it does | Pays for surgery? |
|---|---|---|
| Store quota | The revenue target you must hit to pass the shift | No |
| Store balance | Buys stock, traps, weapons, ammo, boards and decorations | No |
| Personal funds | Your wage; pays pet medicine and the $250 surgery | Yes |
According to Destructoid, your personal pay is a $10 daily wage plus 10% of the store’s revenue when you beat the day’s quota, with deductions for killing human customers. Because traps and weapons come out of the store balance, AllThings. How advises buying the defenses you need on the final night rather than skimping to “save” surgery money.
How to get the True Ending in Shift at Midnight
The True Ending is the strictest of the three because you fund the surgery yourself. The tips below are the ones the guides above agree on, plus one official balance change.
- Don’t kill Clyde on his earlier visits. He drops by the store several times and can show up as a doppelganger. Destructoid, AllThings. How and Player. One all warn that killing the real Clyde removes the Shift 12 call and can lock you out of the endings. Check him as carefully as any customer.
- Never shoot a human customer. Wrong kills dock your end-of-shift pay. If you are unsure, guides suggest letting the customer go and surviving the hunt instead.
- Serve doppelgangers first, then deal with them. Destructoid and AllThings. How both recommend completing a doppelganger’s transaction before killing it, so you keep the money and avoid being hunted. The exception they note: on a Blood Moon the entity shows up anyway.
- Collect tokens before you start the shift. Search for tokens at the start of the night before reading the notice board (reading it starts the shift), then use the prize wheel; Destructoid suggests aiming for the $10 result.
- Keep the store earning. Restock shelves, keep the checkout moving so waiting customers don’t leave, clean up messes, and decorate. GamesHorizon notes that a high shop rating changes what customers buy, which raises the revenue you take 10% of. Store Manager requests (such as catching shoplifters) pay bonuses, per Destructoid.
- Don’t overspend on medicine. Paying for your pet’s medicine lets it join the next shift, which helps solo players, but Destructoid warns that doing it too often leaves you short for the surgery.
- Decide the Clyde call by the size of your gap. Already at $250 or just a few dollars short of a normal shift’s pay: don’t call. Far short and you want the pet to live: calling Clyde is the safer choice.
The developer has also made the True Ending easier to plan for. The August 20 update “equalized product prices so getting true ending is less RNG”, and the same patch added Steam cloud saves.

How to get Grave Decision
Call Clyde when the option appears after Shift 12. That’s the only requirement: your personal balance doesn’t matter. Clyde comes to the store on the final night, the surgery is covered, and your pet survives, but Clyde is killed and the ending shows his funeral (GamesHorizon, AllThings.How). It’s the route to take if you’re far below $250 going into the last night and want the pet to live.
How to get Empty Home
Refuse the Clyde call, then finish Shift 13 with less than $250 in personal funds. The vet can’t operate and the pet dies; Clyde lives because he never came to the store. You don’t need to sabotage your income on purpose. A naturally short run gets there, and AllThings. How says the ending screen states that the surgery cost more than you had.
How many runs do you need for all 3 endings?
The conditions exclude each other, so plan on three Story Mode runs: True Ending first (the hardest money target), then Grave Decision (call Clyde, any balance), then Empty Home (refuse Clyde while under $250). AllThings. How suggests backing up your save right before the Shift 12 decision and reloading it for the other branches, but notes that this may not behave the same on every platform, so treat it as a shortcut that might not work rather than a guarantee.
Finishing the story also opens up more of the game. The developer said in its launch-eve post that Endless Mode (still labeled beta) unlocks only after you complete Story Mode, and the Steam page says a free, major Endless Mode update is planned for Q4 2026.
How many players can play Shift at Midnight?
Shift at Midnight is built for 1 to 3 players. The Steam page calls it “an online co-op detective horror for up to 3 players”, and the developer’s launch post says you can “play solo or with up to 2 extra friends”. The Xbox store listing shows online co-op for 2 to 3 players.
After launch-day complaints about the 3-player cap, the July 23 day-one patch added the option to set a lobby to up to 6 players. The developer was blunt that this is outside the design: the game “will likely become too chaotic, and is not recommended for your first playthrough.” In short: 3 is the intended maximum, and 6 is allowed if you want chaos.
Co-op is online only, with proximity voice chat. There’s no couch or split-screen mode listed on Steam or Xbox.

Is Shift at Midnight crossplay?
Partly. In the July 10 release-date announcement, the developer wrote: “Xbox and PC Gamepass players will have crossplay. Steam players will only be able to play with other Steam players.” None of the developer’s later update posts has changed that. The Xbox store lists cross-platform co-op for Xbox and PC, and the game supports Xbox Play Anywhere.
| Your version | Can play with | Cannot play with |
|---|---|---|
| Steam (PC) | Other Steam players | Xbox console, Xbox app/Game Pass on PC |
| Xbox Series X|S | Xbox console and Xbox app/PC Game Pass players | Steam players |
| Xbox app / PC Game Pass | Xbox console and other Xbox app players | Steam players |
If you can’t join a friend’s lobby on Steam, the developer posted a workaround on launch day: opt into the “network-issues-patch” beta branch (access code “networkissues”) in the game’s Properties, with everyone in the group on the same branch.
