Planet Zoo 2 has 136 animal species: 130 in the base game and 6 more in the Deluxe Upgrade Pack. Frontier’s official Zoopedia lists all of them, and that is where every number in this guide comes from (checked October 29, 2026 UTC). Below, the full list is sorted by where each animal lives in your zoo: land habitats, aviaries, aquariums and exhibits. For each one you get its biomes, the minimum space it needs, its barrier, its group size and its food cost.
We sorted the animals using the requirements on each Zoopedia page. Birds with a flight area go in aviaries. Species that only need deep water go in aquariums. Animals with a humidity requirement and no barrier go in exhibits. Everything else lives in a land habitat. New to the game? How many animals are in Planet Zoo 2?
Planet Zoo 2 launched on October 13, 2026 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with 130 species in the base game. Frontier’s launch post on Steam describes this as “over 130 awesome animals”. The Deluxe Upgrade Pack ($17.99 on Steam) adds 6 more species plus exclusive animal signs. The Deluxe Edition bundles it with the game for $64.99, against $49.99 for the standard edition (Steam US prices, October 29). The pre-purchase Bonus Content Pack has no animals in it, only a shop, donation bins and a photo stand-in.
| Housing type | Species | What you build |
|---|---|---|
| Land habitat (terrestrial and semi-aquatic) | 57 | Barrier habitat with terrain, shelter and water |
| Aviary (flying birds) | 12 | Barrier habitat with support poles and a mesh roof |
| Aquarium (fully aquatic) | 37 | Aquarium barrier, filtration network, set salinity |
| Exhibit (small animals) | 30 | Self-contained exhibit with temperature and humidity |
| Total | 136 | 130 base game + 6 Deluxe |
By class, the roster has 51 mammals, 29 ray-finned fish, 14 birds, 13 reptiles, 9 insects, 8 amphibians and 6 sharks and rays. The rest are a scorpion, a tarantula, a centipede, a snail and the Moon Jelly. Fourteen species are Critically Endangered in their Zoopedia entries: African Penguin, Axolotl, Black Rhinoceros, Gharial, Great Hammerhead, Hawksbill Turtle, Javan Green Magpie, Lehmann’s Poison Frog, Sand Tiger Shark, Sumatran Orangutan, Sunda Pangolin, Western Chimpanzee, Western Lowland Gorilla and White-Backed Vulture.
How to read the tables
- Land, flight and water area are the Zoopedia’s minimum habitat requirements. Each page has a planned-population control, so a bigger group needs more space than shown.
- Water area is the Zoopedia’s “aquatic area”. “Deep” is the deep water area that swimming species need.
- Barrier is shown as grade and height, so “G3, 3 m” means a Grade 3 barrier at least 3 m high.
- Group size is the Zoopedia’s population range.
- Food cost is the Zoopedia’s “Periodic Food Expenses” figure. Use it to compare animals, not as an exact bill.
- Animals marked (Deluxe) need the Deluxe Upgrade Pack.

Which animals can live together in Planet Zoo 2?
The clearest mixed habitat in the Zoopedia is the African savannah. On the pages of Nyala, Sable Antelope, Springbok, Cape Buffalo, Thomson’s Gazelle, Masai Giraffe, Reticulated Giraffe, Gemsbok, Common Warthog, Black Wildebeest, Blue Wildebeest and Plains Zebra, each lists the others plus the Common Ostrich and White-Backed Vulture as thriving relationships. That makes 14 species for one big grassland habitat. The habitat must meet every species’ needs, so plan for the giraffes’ 1,500 m² and a Grade 3 barrier at least 2 m high (the Cape Buffalo needs Grade 3, the Reticulated Giraffe Grade 3 at 2 m). The White-Backed Vulture has a flight area requirement, and Frontier’s guide says flying birds need an aviary, so adding it means roofing the habitat.
The big cats, the Grizzly, Brown and Sun Bears, the Spotted Hyena, Grey Wolf and African Wild Dog list no compatible species at all, so give each one its own habitat. A few others are only “neutral” with each other. The Giant Panda can share with the Red Panda, and the Western Lowland Gorilla with the Western Chimpanzee. The Sumatran Orangutan is neutral with 8 Southeast Asian species: North Sulawesi Babirusa, Wild Boar, Siamang, Great Hornbill, Javan Green Magpie, Asian Small-Clawed Otter, Long-Tailed Parakeet and Malayan Tapir. Check the “Neutral relationships” list on a species’ Zoopedia page before you mix anything else.
Planet Zoo 2 aviary birds (12)
For the first time in the series, these birds fly. Frontier’s official animals guide says they need an aviary built from barriers, support poles and a mesh roof, with nests inside. Each one has a flight area requirement on top of its land area. The other two birds in the game don’t fly: the Common Ostrich lives in a normal habitat, and the African Penguin in a land and water habitat (both are in the land table above).
| Bird | Biomes | Land area | Flight area | Barrier | Group size | Food cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eurasian Bittern | Temperate, Wetlands | 40 m² | 20 m² | G2, 1 m | 1–2 | $191 |
| Golden Eagle (Deluxe) | Desert, Grassland, Taiga, Temperate, Tundra | 400 m² | 50 m² | G2, 1 m | 1–2 | $775 |
| Great Hornbill | Tropical | 80 m² | 50 m² | G2, 1 m | 2–10 | $494 |
| Greater Flamingo | Estuarine, Temperate, Wetlands | 100 m² | 60 m² | G1, 1 m | 20–500 | $36 |
| Javan Green Magpie | Tropical | 50 m² | 25 m² | G1, 1 m | 1–2 | $337 |
| Long-Eared Owl | Grassland, Taiga, Temperate, Wetlands | 250 m² | 50 m² | G2, 1 m | 1–2 | $264 |

| Toco Toucan | Tropical, Grassland, Wetlands | 50 m² | 20 m² | G2, 1 m | 1–2 | $238 |
| White-Backed Vulture | Desert, Grassland | 475 m² | 60 m² | G2, 1 m | 6–80 | $582 |
| White-Tailed Sea-Eagle | Taiga, Temperate, Tundra, Wetlands | 400 m² | 50 m² | G2, 1 m | 1–2 | $866 |

Planet Zoo 2 aquarium animals (37)
Aquariums are new in Planet Zoo 2. Frontier’s aquarium guide says an aquarium fills with freshwater by default. You set it to freshwater, brackish or saltwater through a connected filtration network, and one water filter cleans up to 500 m² of water. Many of these fish are managed as shoals that grow and split over time, rather than as individuals. Twenty-four species need saltwater only and 7 need freshwater only. The Giant Grouper, Hawksbill Turtle, Javanese Cownose Ray and Pacific Sardine accept brackish or saltwater, the Giant Gourami takes freshwater or brackish, and the West Indian Manatee accepts any salinity.

Best saltwater aquarium mix
For a showpiece reef tank, the Zoopedia pages of the Humphead Wrasse, Indo-Pacific Leopard Shark, Javanese Cownose Ray and Ocellated Eagle Ray list each other as thriving relationships. They also list the Dolphinfish, Giant Grouper, Blackspotted Puffer, Blacktip Reef Shark, Sand Tiger Shark, Sailfin Snapper, Clown Triggerfish and Hawksbill Turtle, which makes 12 species. Smaller reef fish such as the Yellow Tang list a long set of neutral tankmates instead, including the Clown Anemonefish, Palette Surgeonfish and Pacific Sardine.
Planet Zoo 2 exhibit animals (30)
Exhibits hold the smaller species: insects, a scorpion and a tarantula, frogs, newts and salamanders, lizards, snakes up to the Yellow Anaconda, a terrapin, a snail and the Moon Jelly. Frontier’s guide calls exhibits self-contained ecosystems, so there’s no land area or barrier grade to plan. Your job is to keep temperature and humidity in range (and salinity for the Moon Jelly), and to keep the animals fed, watered and clean. Many are managed as colonies that regenerate their numbers. Every exhibit animal has the same food cost in the Zoopedia, $225.

Cheapest animals to start a Planet Zoo 2 zoo
If money is tight early on, these habitat animals have the lowest food costs in the Zoopedia. The Greater Flamingo ($36, 100 m² of land plus a 60 m² flight area) and the African Penguin ($83.75, but it needs 135 m² of water) cost the least. Springbok and Thomson’s Gazelle ($164 each) are the cheapest way into the savannah mix above.
Exhibit animals all cost $225 and need no barrier, which keeps their costs easy to plan. Playing other management sims too? See our Two Point Museum money guide, our Two Point Hospital staff training guide and our older Planet Coaster guide for Frontier’s theme park series.
Will Planet Zoo 2 get more animals?
Nothing new has been added since launch. The Zoopedia still lists 136 species on October 29. Frontier’s latest updates, 1.0.6 and hotfix 1.0.7 on October 23, are fixes and balancing, including a pass on animal accreditation tier requirements.
