The free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo lands on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop on October 19 in North America (October 20 in Europe), and your progress carries over to the full game when it launches on Switch 2 on December 4, 2026. Capcom confirmed the date on the official Monster Hunter account, and digital pre-orders open at the same time with a launch discount down to $29.99.
Here’s what the demo includes, what it leaves out, and what it costs to keep hunting after it ends.

What’s in the Prologue Demo
The Switch 2 demo looks to be the same Prologue Demo already out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam, which VGC also noted. According to Capcom’s demo page, it covers:
- The opening of the story, including the full character creator, up to Chapter 1-3: “To the Forest”.
- All 14 weapon types, so you can try the Hunting Horn or Insect Glaive before you commit.
- NPC Support Hunters: firing an SOS Flare calls in AI hunters rather than real players.
- A save you can carry over to the full game, with your options and settings.
The demo is offline only, so online multiplayer and Photo Mode are not available. The Switch 2 version adds one thing the other demos don’t have: local play. Friends with their own Switch 2 and the demo can connect wirelessly and hunt together in the same room.
How to carry your demo save over
Capcom’s instructions are simple, with one catch. Launch the full game on the same user account you used for the demo, and choose “Yes” when it asks to carry over your Prologue Demo save. You don’t need to finish the demo first. The catch: the transfer is blocked if you already have a save in the full game, so don’t start a fresh file before moving your demo progress across.

Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 price and editions
The Standard Edition is listed at $39.99 on the US Nintendo eShop, but digital pre-orders get a discounted $29.99 until December 19, as Nintendo Life reports. The options:
- Standard Edition (digital): base game, $39.99 ($29.99 pre-order price).
- Gold Edition (digital): base game plus the Cosmetic DLC Collection of 126 DLC packs and premium bonuses.
- Deluxe Edition (physical, game-key card): $39.99, base game plus a Deluxe Pack voucher. A game-key card holds a download key rather than the full game, so you’ll need to download the game.
Pre-orders come with the Guild Knight layered armor and the Hope Charm talisman. The Switch 2 version includes every title update released so far, supports cross-play with PS5, Xbox and PC, and needs a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play.
Why the demo matters on Switch 2
Performance is the big question. Wilds had a rough technical launch on other platforms. On Switch 2, Capcom targets 30fps in every mode: 2240×1260 or 1920×1080 docked (Prioritise Resolution or Prioritise Frame Rate) and 1536×864 handheld, and it warns the frame rate may dip in demanding moments, according to Nintendo Life. Producer Genki Sunano called the port a “painstaking” process in an interview covered by Nintendo Life. A free demo lets you check how it plays in handheld and docked mode before you spend anything, and the $29.99 pre-order price makes it worth trying before December 19.
What’s next
Download the demo on October 19 or 20, try a few weapons and decide before the pre-order discount ends on December 19. The full game arrives on December 4, and the Ascendance expansion follows in 2027. Switch 2 owners have a busy holiday ahead, with the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 bundle due October 29 and the Ocarina of Time remake in November.
