How to build a copper golem, how it moves items from copper chests into matching chests, its 32-block range and a simple 10-chest sorting room for 26.3.

To make a Minecraft copper golem, place a block of copper and put a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on top of it last. The golem appears where the pumpkin was, and the copper block turns into a copper chest. Drop items into that copper chest and the golem carries them, up to 16 at a time, into nearby wooden chests that are empty or already hold the same item. This guide covers the build, the sorting rules, the exact range and a simple sorting room for Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.60, with the Java vs Bedrock differences. Checked November 5, 2026 against the Minecraft Wiki and Mojang’s own changelogs.

Minecraft copper golem quick answer

  • Recipe: 1 block of copper (9 copper ingots, any oxidation stage) with 1 carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on top. The pumpkin has to go on last.
  • Bonus: the copper block becomes a copper chest, so every golem comes with its own input chest.
  • What it does: takes up to 16 of the first item it finds in a copper chest and puts it in a wooden chest or trapped chest that is empty or already holds that item.
  • Range: Mojang gives the search area as 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically from the golem. It can only reach chests up to 1 block above or 2 blocks below itself.
  • Limit: it checks at most 10 chests in a row. If none fits, it idles for 7 seconds and tries again.
  • Keep it working: wax it with a honeycomb. An unwaxed golem oxidizes and eventually freezes into a copper golem statue.

How to build a copper golem

The build is two blocks tall, like a mini iron golem:

  1. Get 9 copper ingots and craft a block of copper. Smelt raw copper for the ingots, or mine copper blocks out of a trial chamber, whose floors are mostly copper (our Minecraft mace guide covers trial chambers and how to find one).
  2. Make a carved pumpkin by using shears on a pumpkin. A jack o’lantern works too.
  3. Place the block of copper where you want the input chest to end up.
  4. Put the pumpkin on top last. The golem spawns at the pumpkin’s spot, and the copper block turns into a copper chest facing the same way as the pumpkin. A dispenser can place the pumpkin, and the wiki notes the build also works sideways or upside down as long as the pumpkin is the final block.

Any oxidation stage of copper block works. The golem and its chest match the block’s oxidation (a weathered block gives a weathered golem), but a waxed block does not give a waxed golem, so wax it yourself afterwards.

Item Recipe Notes
Copper golem Block of copper + carved pumpkin (or jack o’lantern) on top Copper block becomes a copper chest
Block of copper 9 copper ingots Any oxidation stage works for the golem
Copper chest 1 chest surrounded by 8 copper ingots Needs a stone pickaxe or better to pick it up
Waxed copper chest Copper chest + honeycomb Stops the chest from oxidizing
Carved pumpkin Shears on a pumpkin Also drops pumpkin seeds

How the copper golem sorts items into chests

Mojang’s Java 1.21.9 notes and the matching Bedrock 1.21.111 changelog describe the same loop for both editions:

  1. Pick up: with empty hands, the golem walks to the nearest copper chest (any oxidation stage, waxed or not) and takes up to 16 of the first item it finds. The wiki says it stops for 3 seconds at each chest it checks.
  2. Drop off: holding an item, it walks to the nearest wooden chest or trapped chest. It puts the items in if the chest is empty or already holds the same type of item.
  3. Give up and retry: it checks at most 10 chests in a row. If none fits, it idles for 7 seconds and starts again. The wiki adds that it forgets which chests it has visited every time it drops off successfully.

A few rules decide where an item lands:

  • Item type only. The golem ignores durability, enchantments, custom names and the contents of shulker boxes and bundles. An enchanted diamond sword goes into the same chest as a plain one.
  • Potions differ by edition. In Java the golem can’t tell potion types, tipped arrows or suspicious stews apart, so they all end up together. Bedrock sorts them by type.
  • It doesn’t remember. Golems open each chest to see what’s inside and never learn which chest holds what, so compact rooms work best.
  • Only chests count. Golems use copper chests, wooden chests and trapped chests only. They ignore barrels, ender chests, minecarts and boats with chests, other containers, and items on the ground.
  • One golem per chest at a time. A golem won’t open a chest another golem is already using, so several golems can share one room.

If a golem is holding something you want back, use it with an empty hand and it drops the item.

Copper golem range: how far it searches

Mojang’s changelogs give the search area as 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically from the golem’s position. The wiki describes the same thing as a 65 x 17 x 65 block box centred on the golem.

The height limit matters more than the distance. The wiki says a golem can’t use a chest more than 1 block above or 2 blocks below its feet, though it will try to walk there if it finds a path. In practice:

  • Stack chests no more than two high (floor level plus one).
  • Keep the input copper chest and the destination chests on the same floor, or give the golem stairs it can use. Mojang’s Java 26.1 notes fixed a bug that stopped golems from walking down blocks between half a block and a full block tall to reach a chest.
  • Copper golems stay active even when you are more than 32 blocks away, unlike most passive mobs.

Simple copper golem sorting system (step by step)

This is our layout, based on the rules above. It uses one golem, one input chest and up to nine sorted chests, so the golem’s 10-chest limit is rarely hit. Materials: 1 block of copper, 1 carved pumpkin, 9 to 10 wooden chests, 1 honeycomb, and an iron door.

  1. Pick a small, flat room, around 9 x 9 blocks, with a flat floor so every chest sits at the golem’s foot level or one block up.
  2. Build the golem in the middle. Copper block first, pumpkin on top. The copper block becomes your input chest.
  3. Wax the golem right away by using a honeycomb on it.
  4. Line the walls with wooden chests, one or two high. Don’t put anything conductive (a normal solid block) on top of a chest, or it can’t be opened. Glass is fine. On Bedrock, bottom slabs also block chests.
  5. Put one item in each chest to set what it collects: one cobblestone in the stone chest, one dirt in the dirt chest, and so on. Add item frames on the chests if you want labels.
  6. Leave one chest empty as a catch-all. The first stray item that lands in it turns it into that item’s chest, so check it now and then and move things out.
  7. Use an iron door. Copper golems open wooden and copper doors, but not iron ones, so an iron door keeps the golem in the room.
  8. Feed it (optional). Run hoppers from a farm into the copper chest. The wiki’s automatic smelting tutorial suggests using a copper chest as a smelter’s output chest so a golem sorts the results.

Speed tips: each trip moves at most 16 items and every chest check costs 3 seconds, so a 64-item stack needs at least four trips. If the room feels slow, build a second golem nearby. It brings its own copper chest, and two golems never open the same chest at once.

Why is my copper golem not sorting?

  • No chest fits. Every nearby chest holds something different and none is empty. Add an empty chest or one seeded with that item.
  • The chest is out of reach. It’s more than 1 block above or 2 blocks below the golem.
  • Wrong container. Barrels, ender chests and shulker boxes are ignored.
  • The chest can’t open. A solid block or a cat on top stops it. The golem counts that chest as checked and moves on.
  • It turned into a statue. Scrape off the oxidation with an axe (see below).
  • It’s on a lead (Bedrock). The wiki’s Bedrock history says leashed copper golems no longer transport items.
  • Too many chests nearby. If the right chest isn’t among the 10 nearest it checks, the golem waits 7 seconds and tries again. Smaller rooms fix this.

Oxidation and the copper golem statue

An unwaxed copper golem goes through four looks: unoxidized, exposed, weathered and oxidized. According to the wiki, each stage takes 420 to 460 minutes of game time (21 to 23 in-game days), and the timer keeps running even when the golem’s chunk isn’t loaded. So a fresh golem is fully oxidized after about 21 to 23 hours of play.

Once fully oxidized, an unwaxed golem soon turns into a copper golem statue (the wiki puts the average at 8.62 seconds) and drops whatever it was carrying. The statue keeps the golem’s name tag name.

  • Prevent it: use a honeycomb on the golem. Waxed golems stop oxidizing.
  • Undo oxidation: use an axe on the golem to remove one stage at a time. An axe also removes wax.
  • Bring a statue back: scrape it with an axe until it’s unoxidized, then scrape once more and it turns back into a golem.
  • Statues as decoration: use a statue to switch between four poses (standing, sitting, running, star). Each pose gives a different redstone comparator signal.
  • Lightning: a lightning strike removes oxidation one stage at a time. Mojang’s Java 26.4 Snapshot 7 notes list “Lightning removes the wax from a waxed copper golem” as a fixed bug, so on Java 26.3 a strike can still strip the wax. That fix is snapshot-only until 26.4 is released.

Abandoned camps can also generate an oxidized copper golem statue and oxidized copper chests.

Poppies, doors and other behaviour

  • Iron golems sometimes hand a copper golem a poppy, which it wears on its lightning rod. Use shears to get the poppy back.
  • Copper golems have 12 health (6 hearts), are fully passive, and run away in a panic if hit. When killed they drop 1 to 3 copper ingots.
  • They take no fall damage, sink in water without drowning, and still walk along the bottom.

What changed since The Copper Age

Copper golem changes in Mojang’s notes since launch (Java up to 26.3 and the 26.4 snapshots, Bedrock up to 26.60):

  • Java 1.21.11: fixed golems in cave or void air never turning into statues. Underground golems oxidize into statues like any other, so wax them too.
  • Java 26.1: fixed golems not walking down half-block to full-block steps to reach a chest.
  • Bedrock 1.21.120: statues keep the golem’s custom name, a golem with a flower drops a poppy when it turns into a statue, the lead attaches to the body, and statues glow in glow item frames.
  • Bedrock 26.10: golems now properly pick up spears, tridents and crossbows.
  • Java 26.2, 26.3 and Bedrock 26.20 to 26.60: no copper golem changes listed.

FAQ

What is the copper golem recipe in Minecraft?

There’s no crafting table recipe: place a block of copper, then a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern on top.

How far can a copper golem reach chests?

It searches 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically from where it stands, but it can only use chests up to 1 block above or 2 blocks below itself.

How do I stop my copper golem turning into a statue?

Use a honeycomb on it. If it has already become a statue, scrape it with an axe until it’s unoxidized, then once more to bring it back.

Does the copper golem work on Bedrock Edition?

Yes. It has been in Bedrock Edition since 1.21.111. Sorting works the same way, apart from the differences in the table above.
