Ghost of Yōtei has sold an estimated 5.4 million copies on PS5 and earned about $407 million from game sales in its first year, according to new estimates from market research firm Alinea Analytics. That puts Ghost of Yotei sales roughly 1.5 million copies behind Ghost of Tsushima at the same point after launch, but only about 3% behind it in revenue. Sony has not published an updated sales figure, so these are third-party estimates, not official numbers.
The data was shared on October 16 by Rhys Elliott, Alinea’s head of market analysis, in one post on Yōtei’s sales and a follow-up comparing it with Tsushima. IGN reported the figures the same day.

Ghost of Yotei sales vs Ghost of Tsushima
Elliott’s comparison is launch-aligned, meaning both games are measured at the same age rather than on the same calendar date.
| Ghost of Yōtei (PS5) | Ghost of Tsushima (PS4) | |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated copies sold | 5.4 million | Nearly 7 million |
| Estimated revenue from copies | $407 million | $418 million |
| Launch price | $70 | $60 |
| Discounts | Two two-week PS Store discounts to $50 | Already $45 less than three months after launch |
| Installed base at this point | Nearly 100 million PS5s | About 117 million PS4s and 10 million PS5s |
The gap in units comes down mostly to price. Yōtei launched $10 higher and has rarely been discounted, so Alinea estimates it earns about 26% more revenue per buyer. Elliott called that “consistent with PlayStation’s goal of extracting more revenue per player.”
What else the Alinea estimates show
- Physical share: 36.8% of Yōtei’s copies were sold at retail, a share Elliott singled out in his post.
- Still selling: about 500,000 copies in the third quarter of 2026 (close to $30 million), and 1.8 million copies ($121 million) so far this year.
- Complete Edition: on October 1, PlayStation added the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion and the Most Wanted run-based mode, delisted the original game and replaced it with the Complete Edition, which is $69.99 on the PlayStation Store. Existing owners can upgrade for $14.99, according to Elliott. Alinea estimates nearly 50,000 people bought the digital Complete Edition in its first two weeks, bringing in more than $2 million.
- Players returning: daily active players averaged about 150,000 in the two months before the update, then jumped above 300,000 (a peak of 327,000), which Alinea reads as over 6% of the player base coming back.
How this fits with Sony’s own statements
Sony’s last hard number for the game was 3.3 million copies in its first month. In February, reporting results for the quarter ending December 31, 2025, Sony said Yōtei had exceeded Ghost of Tsushima’s sales over the same period and made a significant contribution to the quarter, as Game Developer reported. Sony did not say whether it meant units or revenue. Alinea’s figures suggest the two games are close on revenue but not on copies, and its revenue estimate covers copies sold alone, not upgrades or other add-ons.
Elliott’s verdict on the “flop” talk around the sequel was blunt: “anyone who says that Ghost of Yotei is a flop is flat-out wrong.” He also noted that Yōtei’s revenue curve is starting to flatten faster than Tsushima’s did. In short, if the estimates hold, Sony is earning about as much from Yōtei as it did from Tsushima while selling fewer copies at a higher price and with far fewer discounts.

What’s next
The next official word could come with Sony’s next quarterly results, though Sony doesn’t always give per-game numbers. Elliott suggested that a wave of new PS5 owners arriving for GTA 6 on November 19 could slow Yōtei’s flattening sales curve over the holidays. Until Sony reports again, treat the 5.4 million figure as an informed estimate.
