The best start to a first save in Football Manager 27 is to keep it simple. Pick a stable club with money and good facilities, hand the jobs you don’t enjoy to your staff, choose one formation that suits your best players, and use FM27’s new Tactical Effectiveness gauges to check whether the team understands your plan. Sports Interactive’s own advice to newcomers, given on the Official Xbox Podcast on October 28, comes down to two words: delegate and be patient.
This Football Manager 27 beginner’s guide puts that advice in order, from setup to your first matches, using SI’s FM27 feature deep dives, the Xbox Wire first-timer tips interview with SI Senior Features Manager Ant Farley and community advice, checked on October 29, 2026. It’s written for the free Launch Preview (PC and Mac, from 18:00 UTC on October 29), whose saves carry over to the full game on November 10.

Quick answer: FM27 tips for beginners
- Club: start with a well-run club that has a decent budget and modest expectations. Save the lower-league rebuild for your second career.
- Setup: load only the leagues you want to play in or follow, and pick a Continue Flow preset (Streamlined, Balanced, Comprehensive or Custom) that matches how much detail you want.
- Delegate: SI says you can hand training, recruitment and other areas to staff and come back to them later.
- Tactics: one simple system built around your best players. FM27’s Tactical Complexity rewards simple plans early on, especially at smaller clubs.
- Matches: use the new Tactical Tweaks from the touchline, and listen when your staff in the dugout say it’s time to start or stop one.
- Mindset: results take time. Farley’s top tip is patience, because “you can kind of make all of the right choices… and still lose the game”.
Before your first save: when and where you can play
The Launch Preview is free for everyone on PC and Mac from October 29, 18:00 UTC to November 3, 18:00 UTC, through Steam, the Epic Games Store, the Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass, according to SI’s Launch Preview announcement. Start times in every time zone and who keeps access after November 3 are in our FM27 Launch Preview start time guide. Check your PC first: FM27 asks for at least 6 GB of RAM and 20 GB of storage, with the full spec list in our Football Manager 27 new features and PC requirements page.
SI warns that some club and player assets may be missing from the preview until launch.
Step 1: Choose the right club for your first save
Taking a small club up the leagues is the classic story, and the hardest way to learn. Operation Sports’ FM26 beginner tips recommend starting at a bigger club “with as little pressure and as many resources as possible” and saving the long rebuild for later.
When you browse clubs, look at the things that make a first season forgiving:
| What to check | Good sign for a beginner | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Board expectations | Mid-table or “secure your place”, not “win the title” | You get time to learn before the board loses patience |
| Finances | Secure, with a transfer and wage budget | You can fix weak positions in the first window |
| Training and youth facilities | Good or better | Players improve faster, and young players are worth developing |
| League you know | A league you watch in real life | You already know the rivals and the style of play |
Once you take the job, read the welcome messages before you press Continue. The chairman’s introduction summarises the club’s finances, budgets and facilities on one screen, and the board meeting about the club vision tells you what you’ll be judged on.

Step 2: Set up your game world and the Continue Flow
Load the league you manage in, plus the leagues your rivals and transfer targets play in, and leave the rest out. A bigger database means slower processing, especially on a minimum-spec PC.
FM27 adds a setting that matters a lot to new players: the Continue Flow. SI’s football world deep dive says you choose it when you begin your first career, and it decides how often the game stops when you press Continue.
| Continue Flow preset | What SI says it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlined | Fewer breaks as you speed through the weeks toward match days | Tactics-and-matches players |
| Balanced | More insights and information as they happen | A first save: you see the key news without too many stops |
| Comprehensive | The most stops and information, taking you to different areas of the game | The full story of the wider world |
| Custom | You choose how often the game stops for messages, results, fixtures and news | Fine-tuning once you know what you care about |
There is also a setting for the Continue button itself: it can either take you through your messages or carry on with unread messages. New players should have it go through messages, so a contract request or injury isn’t missed.
Step 3: Create your manager
The Manager Creator is mostly about looks, but two things help: you can set up to four favourite clubs, and SI has increased font sizes, with Large, Medium and Small scaling modes for 1440p and 4K monitors (per the accessibility deep dive).
Step 4: Delegate what you don’t want to do yet
This is SI’s main onboarding advice. “Let’s just say you’re new to the game and buying players is something that really excites you, but maybe the training, not so much,” Farley told Xbox Wire. “We have the option to delegate that to your staff members.” He adds that you “could play an FM save where all you’re doing is picking your tactics and playing the matches”.
In FM27 the delegation options sit in the new control panel at the top of each main area. SI’s interface deep dive names delegating responsibilities as a Squad control panel action, and the Recruitment control panel also lets you read staff advice, change budgets, set a recruitment focus, adjust your scouting range and delegate. A sensible split for a first save:
| Keep it yourself | Hand it to staff at first |
|---|---|
| Tactics and team selection | Training schedules |
| Matches, Tactical Tweaks and Shouts | Opposition instructions |
| Big transfers | Contract renewals of fringe players, youth and reserve friendlies |
| Talking to your key players | Some press conferences |
Which jobs can be handed over exactly depends on the staff responsibilities options in your save, and they can be changed at any time. You can take any job back later. Operation Sports puts it simply: you can “always take back control later once you understand how each system works”.
Step 5: Learn the six main menus
FM27 has six primary menus: Portal, Squad, Tactics, Recruitment, Training and Club. Messages are colour-coded by topic, and many of them now contain the item itself, such as the full scout report or every offer for one player in a single message. SI has also added more tooltips. Hover over anything you don’t understand.

| Menu | Use it first for |
|---|---|
| Portal | Messages, news, the league table and your next fixtures |
| Squad | Seeing who your best players are, team meetings, delegating responsibilities |
| Tactics | Your formation, roles and the Tactical Effectiveness gauges |
| Recruitment | Staff advice, budgets, recruitment focus and scouting |
| Training | Schedules, player load and individual training |
| Club | Board expectations, finances, facilities and club history |
Pin the screens you open every week to the Bookmark Bar. In FM27 the bookmarks show text labels and can be dragged into a new order, and you can choose which screen each main menu opens on.
Step 6: FM27 tactics basics for new players
Football Manager 27’s biggest new system is Tactical Effectiveness, which builds on the old Tactical Familiarity. According to SI’s training and Tactical Effectiveness deep dive, gauges on the Tactics, Training and Recruitment screens show how comfortable your team is with your instructions, which means how likely they are to carry them out well. Four areas feed it:
| Tactical Effectiveness area | What it means for you | What moves it, per SI |
|---|---|---|
| Tactical Understanding | How well the squad knows your system | Team training focused on cohesion and your tactic |
| Player Ability | Whether your players have the attributes for it | Recruitment: scout reports now show Tactical Effectiveness |
| Player Buy In | Whether the players believe in your plan | How you connect with your squad over time |
| Next Match Information | How prepared the team is for the next opponent | Match-preparation training for the next match and opposition |
The key beginner lesson sits next to it. Tactical Complexity measures how many team, player and opposition instructions you’ve set. SI says a simple plan can be “instantly effective, but have limited potential”, while a complex one may struggle at first and has a higher ceiling. Its own example: “relentless counter-pressing may prove to be too complicated” in the lower leagues. For a first save, that means:
- Pick one formation that fits your best players’ natural positions. Don’t force them into a system you like on TV.
- Use mostly default roles and only a few team instructions.
- Watch the gauges over a few weeks before you change anything.
- Change one thing at a time, so you know what helped.
Our Football Manager 2024 tactics guide explains the common shapes; FM27’s gauges tell you whether your squad can play them.
Tactical Tweaks and Shouts on match day
Tactical Tweaks are FM27’s answer to the most intimidating part of the game. Farley calls them “a single button to press that will make multiple changes”, made from the touchline instead of the Tactics screen. Team tweaks include playing with more urgency, going longer with passes, exploiting width or reducing the press. Individual ones include swapping your wingers or sending the goalkeeper up for a late corner. Tweaks stay on until you turn them off, and some contradict each other.
The easiest habit for a beginner: read the dugout feed. SI’s match engine deep dive says your staff tell you what the opposition manager is changing, when to use a tweak and when to stop. Shouts were rebuilt to affect players’ mental state, and staff summarise how each one landed.
Step 7: Training without the headache
FM27 replaces the old training Units with a system aimed at the next match. The senior squad trains mainly for match preparation, cohesion and tactical understanding, with sessions for things like high pressing, build-up play or sitting in a low block. Individual training is still where players improve attributes or learn new positions and traits.
- If you run it yourself, copy a weekly schedule you like (copying is back in FM27) and watch the player-load indicators for the weeks ahead before a busy run of fixtures.
- For a wonderkid, SI says you now have to balance long-term individual training against the short-term need to win matches. Don’t drop a 17-year-old’s individual plan just because results dip.
Step 8: Your first transfer window
Ask your staff before you spend: the Recruitment control panel collects their advice. When you scout a target, check the Tactical Effectiveness rating in the scout report: SI says it shows whether a player can make an instant impact in your shape or will need time to learn it. For a beginner, players who fit straight away are worth more than a big name who doesn’t suit the system.
Step 9: Be patient with results
Farley’s top tip for new players is “be patient”. “Football is a game of marginal gains,” he told Xbox Wire, and the game rewards you once things click, whether that’s a run up the league or “taking a plucky underdog and killing a giant in a Cup game”. Don’t scrap your tactic after one defeat, and if a save goes badly, start another: Operation Sports notes that “every save teaches you something”.
Should a beginner play FM27 on PC or console?
Only PC and Mac have the Launch Preview. FM27 Console arrives on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 10. Farley says both versions “offer the same core experience”, but the console version is “a little bit more streamlined and faster paced”, with some console-only features such as “pivotal moments” for big player decisions. On phones, FM27 Mobile comes to Netflix and FM27 Touch to Apple Arcade on the same day. Our FM Mobile tactics guide covers the mobile game’s basics.
