Switch Sports Resort is out Oct 22 on Switch 2, and day-one update Ver. 1.1.0 unlocks ranked, Casual Online and 8-player Friend Lobbies, plus a Mii setting.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is out today, October 22, on Nintendo Switch 2, and its first Switch Sports Resort update, Ver. 1.1.0, is already live. Nintendo published the patch notes on its Japanese support site on October 21. The patch switches on every online mode: the ranked league, Casual Online and Friend Lobbies for up to eight players. It also adds a setting for how often your Mii characters show up. Nintendo’s notes say you need the latest update to play anything online.

Switch Sports Resort Ver. 1.1.0 patch notes

When we checked at 05:40 UTC on October 22, Nintendo had posted the full notes in Japanese only. The summary below is our own translation of the official page. Nintendo Life reported the update the same afternoon.

Mii

  • New Mii frequency setting: go to Options, then User Settings, then Other. It only affects competitive sports played offline.
  • Set it to “Always”, and every Mii registered on the console, plus guest Miis, appears in every match.
  • When several players have different settings, the highest frequency wins.

General

  • Online matches (ranked) are now available. You play people around the world and try to move up to higher leagues, across 9 competitive sports. Nintendo’s store page calls this mode the Pro League.
  • Casual Online is now available. These matches don’t record wins or losses, and they cover the same 9 competitive sports. If you pick the option to play as a pair with a far-away friend, you team up and take on other players together.
  • Playing with friends who are far away is now available. Up to 8 people can join one group online and play all 12 sports, competitive and leisure. A group can split up and play different sports at the same time. A “Join ID” lets people who aren’t on your friend list join a session for a while.
  • Several issues were fixed to make the game run more smoothly. Nintendo doesn’t list which ones.

Which sports you can play online

Nintendo’s UK game page gives the online player limit for every sport. The three leisure sports, Skateboarding, Power Cruising and Prop Plane, can be played online only in a Friend Lobby. They aren’t part of ranked play or Casual Online.

Sport Offline players Online players
Bowling 1-4 1-16
Golf 1-4 1-8
Tennis, Volleyball, Basketball, Archery 1-4 1-4
Table Tennis 1-4 1-2
Boxing, Thumb Wrestling 1-2 1-2
Skateboarding, Power Cruising, Prop Plane 1-4 1-4 (Friend Lobby only)

Every online mode needs a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. Friend Lobbies allow up to two players per console, and GameChat works in the game, according to the US store listing.

How to get the Ver. 1.1.0 update

If your console is online, it should download the patch by itself. To check, or to update by hand, follow Nintendo’s support steps: on the HOME Menu, highlight Switch Sports Resort without opening it. Press + or -, choose Software Update, then Via the Internet. If you have a physical copy, update it before you go online, because Nintendo’s notes say online play needs the latest version.

What’s next

Nintendo says the in-game Item Center gets two new collections every week and new themed items every month, so expect more small updates. If Nintendo posts official English patch notes or a Ver. 1.1.1 fix, we’ll add them here. Switch Sports Resort shares launch day with Cult of the Lamb’s Switch 2 version, and the rest of the week’s releases are in our new Switch 2 games roundup. Already bought it and want more for less? The eShop Screaming Deals sale is running until November 1.
