No release date and not cancelled: every official Prison Architect 2 update from the 2024 delays to the 2026 closed betas and Paradox’s October 2026 report.

Prison Architect 2 release date: none yet, and the game is not cancelled. As of November 1, 2026, the Steam store page lists the release as “To be announced”, and nobody can pre-order it. The last fixed date was September 3, 2024. Since then, Paradox has run three closed betas in 2026, the latest announced for September 9, and its October 29, 2026 financial report still counts it as an announced game in development.

Below is every official status update in order, what the 2026 betas tell us, which platforms are planned, and what Paradox has not said yet. Each status line is dated, because this page tracks a moving target.

Quick answer

  • Prison Architect 2 release date: none announced (Steam “To be announced”, checked November 1, 2026 UTC).
  • Is it cancelled? No. Paradox’s August 2, 2024 delay notice says “No, the game is not canceled”, and its January-September 2026 report (October 29, 2026) still lists it among “the announced games” it is developing.
  • Latest official news: a closed beta announced on August 31, 2026, starting September 9, 2026 (sign-ups ran until September 2).
  • Developer: Kokku, after Double Eleven left the project in May 2024. Paradox Interactive publishes.
  • Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S were announced in January 2024. The 2026 betas were PC only, according to coverage of the September test.
  • Pre-orders: closed. All pre-orders were refunded after the August 2024 delay.

Is Prison Architect 2 cancelled?

No. Three pieces of official evidence point the same way, and none of them is older than August 2024.

  1. The delay notice itself. The August 2, 2024 announcement includes a Q&A with the question “Is the game canceled?” and the answer “No, the game is not canceled.” Paradox said it needed to improve performance and content and to “re-assess the scope of the work” before setting a new date.
  2. Three closed betas in 2026. The official X account opened beta sign-ups on January 14, April 8 and August 31, 2026. In 2024 Paradox had said there would be no extra beta access “right now”, so the betas are the clearest sign that work moved forward.
  3. Paradox’s own accounts. In its interim report for January-September 2026 (published October 29, 2026), Paradox writes that “capitalised development costs remain for, among others, the announced games Prison Architect 2, Afterworld and LEGO Skylines.” In plain terms, the company still books it as a game in development, next to two projects it announced at Gamescom 2026.

Why do so many people search “Prison Architect 2 cancelled”? In 2024 the indefinite delay came shortly after Paradox cancelled another life and management sim, Life by You, and outlets such as GamesRadar covered the two together. The game also vanished from sale when pre-orders were refunded, and the official news page has had no new post since August 2024 (the 2026 updates went out on X and the Paradox forum instead). None of that is a cancellation.

Prison Architect 2 release date: what we know (November 2026)

There is no date, no release window and no price. Paradox has not announced a 2026 or 2027 launch anywhere we checked: the Steam page, the Paradox game page, the official X account (latest post August 31, 2026) and the Q3 2026 report. Any site quoting a specific 2026 or 2027 day is guessing.

What the record does show:

  • The game was close to done once. In April 2024 Paradox said it had “builds certified on all platforms” and was ready to release, but crash rates on low-end PCs missed its targets. The May 2024 handover post repeats that the sequel had passed “certification on all platforms”.
  • The 2024 rework was about performance and content. Kokku’s June 2024 dev diary describes reworking lakes and ponds for frame rate and rebalancing inmate freedom, frustration and misbehaviour.
  • Three betas ran in 2026 (January, April, September). Paradox has not said whether more tests are planned. Until it sets a date, treat any launch as unannounced.

Prison Architect 2 beta: how the 2026 tests worked

Each beta was announced on X with a sign-up link to the Paradox forum, and the windows were short: four days in April (April 8-12) and two days in late August (August 31 to September 2). The official posts give only the start dates and sign-up deadlines. For the September test, AllThingsHow (September 2, 2026) reported these conditions:

Detail September 2026 closed beta Source
Sign-ups closed September 2, 2026 @PrisonArchitect (Aug 31)
Beta start September 9, 2026 @PrisonArchitect (Aug 31)
Beta end September 15, 2026 AllThingsHow
Platform PC only AllThingsHow
Age 18+ AllThingsHow
NDA Required (no footage, screenshots or impressions) AllThingsHow

The NDA explains why there is almost no beta footage online. Places are limited and selected players are contacted directly, so signing up did not guarantee access. No beta sign-up is open as of November 1, 2026. The fastest way to catch the next one is to follow @PrisonArchitect on X or the Prison Architect 2 board on the Paradox forum, where the 2026 sign-ups were posted.

Is Prison Architect 2 coming to PS5 and Xbox?

Yes, that is still the plan on record. The January 2024 announcement FAQ says the game “will be on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5”, and the Paradox game page still links to PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings (checked November 1, 2026), though neither sells the game. The 2026 betas were reported as PC only. We found no announcement of Nintendo Switch 2, Mac or mobile versions, and Steam lists Windows only.

Prison Architect 2 PC system requirements

Steam still shows the minimum specs published in 2024. The recommended specs are listed as “TBC”, which fits a game whose performance target was the reason for the delay. Expect these to change before launch.

Part Minimum (Steam, checked Nov 1, 2026)
OS Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU Intel Core i7-6700K or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
RAM 8 GB
GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB) or AMD Radeon RX 480 (8 GB)
Recommended TBC

What changes in Prison Architect 2

From Paradox’s 2024 feature highlights and store page, the sequel’s main changes over the 2015 original are:

  • Full 3D with multiple floors, the two features Paradox called design pillars (“an easter egg in the original game”).
  • A new inmate behaviour system where prisoners form relationships, rivalries and schemes based on their needs.
  • An upgraded Career Mode on a world map of prison sites, each a scenario with its own goals and completion bonus.
  • World of Wardens prison sharing across platforms, according to the launch FAQ.

What to play while you wait

The original Prison Architect is still on sale on Steam ($29.99, Windows, Mac and Linux, checked November 1, 2026) with 12 DLC packs, and our Prison Architect building and management guide covers layout, staffing and security basics. FAQ

Is Prison Architect 2 still coming out?

Yes, according to Paradox. It ran closed betas in January, April and September 2026, and its October 29, 2026 report still lists Prison Architect 2 among its announced games in development. There is no release date yet.

Why was Prison Architect 2 delayed indefinitely?

Paradox said in August 2024 that internal reviews and beta testers flagged performance and content problems it wanted fixed before launch. The earlier April 2024 delay cited memory usage and crashes on minimum-spec PCs.

Can I pre-order Prison Architect 2?

No. Pre-orders were removed and refunded on all platforms after the August 2024 delay, and Paradox said the pre-order bonus items would be added to the base game for everyone. Steam currently offers only a wishlist button.

Who is developing Prison Architect 2?

Kokku, a studio that started working on the game in autumn 2023 alongside Double Eleven and took it over in May 2024, when Double Eleven and Paradox “mutually agreed to part ways”. Paradox Interactive is the publisher.

How do I join the Prison Architect 2 beta?

Watch the official @PrisonArchitect X account and the Paradox forum. Each 2026 beta opened sign-ups on X with a link to a forum form, and the April and August windows lasted only four and two days. Testers had to be 18 or older and sign an NDA, according to coverage of the September test.
