Pokémon GO Explorer Gadget: How to Use It + Not Working Fixes

The Explorer Gadget now auto-catches and spins while Pokémon GO is open, marked by pink Poké Balls. Level 20+ setup steps and every official reason it stops.

The Pokémon GO Explorer Gadget now works while you have the app open, not only in the background. Since the update announced on pokemongo.com on November 2, 2026, it keeps auto-catching Pokémon and spinning PokéStops as you play, and a pink Poké Ball icon marks what it is going for. It still needs Trainer level 20, still throws only regular Poké Balls, and still stops for the day once it hits its daily limit.

Below: how to turn it on, what the November update changed, and why it can look like it is “not working”. Every fact comes from the official Pokémon GO news posts and the official Pokémon GO Help Center. Checked November 4, 2026 (UTC).

Quick answer

  • What it is: a built-in Key Item that throws Poké Balls at nearby Pokémon and spins PokéStops for you while you walk. You don’t need an accessory.
  • Who can use it: Trainers at level 20 or higher.
  • How to turn it on: tap the Explorer Gadget icon at the top right of the map (or open Item Bag, then Key Items), then tap Use.
  • New since Nov 2: it also works while the app is open. A pink Poké Ball icon shows the Pokémon or PokéStop it is targeting, and you can tap that target to take over for a short time.
  • Limits: regular Poké Balls only (no Great Balls, Ultra Balls or Berries), one throw per Pokémon, and a daily catch and spin limit that depends on your Trainer level.
  • Most common reasons it stops: a full Pokémon Storage or Item Bag, no Poké Balls left, the daily limit reached, or a connected Pokémon GO Plus + or other accessory.

What changed in the Explorer Gadget update (November 2026)

When the Explorer Gadget debuted on August 13, 2026, it only ran while Pokémon GO was not actively open on your phone. The idea was that you lock the screen and walk. The November 2 update keeps that background mode and adds an active-play mode on top.

Feature At launch (Aug 13, 2026) After the update (Nov 2, 2026)
When it works Only while Pokémon GO is not actively open In the background and while you’re actively playing
What you see on the map Nothing; you check the summary later A pink Poké Ball icon over each Pokémon or PokéStop it’s engaging
Taking over Not possible Tap the marked Pokémon or PokéStop within a limited window to catch or spin it yourself
Level requirement Trainer level 20+ Trainer level 20+ (unchanged)
Balls it uses Poké Balls only Poké Balls only (unchanged)
Pokémon it skips Pokémon not yet registered in your Pokédex, mighty Pokémon Same (unchanged)
Accessories Can’t be active at the same time as a Pokémon GO Plus + or similar device Same (unchanged); no need to unpair

The same post lists other recent changes. There’s a clearer catch summary, a dedicated Appraise button above the Additional Options button on a Pokémon’s page, and new rings around Pokémon drawn in by Lure Modules or met on Routes. Spun PokéStops now have clearer color contrast with unspun ones, which makes it easier to see what the gadget has already done. One change matters if you play Max Battles: visiting a Power Spot, or placing a Pokémon at one after a Max Battle win, no longer triggers special wild encounters around it. Our Pokémon GO Max Battle schedule for this week has the current bosses.

How to get the Explorer Gadget

You don’t buy or unlock anything. Pokémon GO calls the Explorer Gadget a built-in feature, and you’ll find it in the Key Items section of your Item Bag. The official Help Center lists five conditions for using it:

  1. You’ve reached Trainer level 20 or higher.
  2. You aren’t using an accessory device such as the Pokémon GO Plus +.
  3. You haven’t reached the Explorer Gadget’s daily limit yet.
  4. You have free space in your Pokémon Storage and Item Bag.
  5. To catch Pokémon, you have Poké Balls in your Item Bag.

The August launch post described a phased rollout, so not every account got the gadget on day one. The November 2 post and the current Help Center article no longer mention a phased rollout. Neither one gives a date when every account had it, though.

How to use the Explorer Gadget

  1. On the map, tap the Explorer Gadget icon at the top right. You can also open the Item Bag and go to Key Items.
  2. Tap Use in the window that opens.
  3. Keep moving. The Help Center says you still need to explore the real world with your phone on you for the gadget to work fully. The launch post says it runs while you move at a casual pace.
  4. To pause or resume, tap the Explorer Gadget icon on the map again.
  5. To see what it did, tap the icon (or find it under Key Items). It shows which Pokémon it caught and how many PokéStops it spun.

Using it while the app is open

When the gadget is on and you’re playing normally, a pink Poké Ball icon appears over the Pokémon or PokéStop it is trying to catch or spin. If you want that Pokémon for yourself (for example, to use a Berry or an Ultra Ball), tap it and catch it manually. You only have a short window after the pink icon appears, and the official post doesn’t say how long it is. Pokémon you catch by hand while the gadget is on don’t show up in its summary.

If you own a Pokémon GO Plus +

You can keep the accessory paired, but the gadget and the device can’t be active at the same time. With an accessory paired, the launch post says to start the Explorer Gadget from Key Items in your Item Bag. The Help Center adds that if you try to activate the gadget while an accessory is in use, the game asks you to disconnect it. Watch the order you do this in. If you switch to the accessory while the Explorer Gadget is running, the gadget stops and you can’t use it again until the next day, according to the launch post.

How the Explorer Gadget catches Pokémon

  • One throw only. It throws a single Poké Ball at each Pokémon. If the catch fails, the Pokémon flees.
  • Poké Balls only. It can’t use Great Balls, Ultra Balls or Berries. If you have no Poké Balls when you turn it on, you get some to start with. If you run out before the daily limit, the map shows an alert.
  • Skipped Pokémon. It won’t try to catch Pokémon you haven’t registered in your Pokédex, or mighty Pokémon. It will catch other forms of a species you already have. The Help Center’s example: if you have Pom-Pom Style Oricorio, it will still go for the Baile, Sensu and Pa’u Styles.
  • Summary and Journal. The summary pop-up lists catches from newest to oldest. Pokémon that fled aren’t in it, but you can see them in your Journal. If the gadget hasn’t finished its day’s activity by midnight local time, no summary pops up automatically; check the Journal instead.

It spins PokéStops that fall within your interaction radius as you walk and adds the items straight to your bag. PokéStop spins have a daily upper limit too.

Pokémon GO Explorer Gadget not working: official causes and fixes

The Help Center has no separate “not working” article for the Explorer Gadget. The table below matches each common symptom to the conditions the official pages give.

Symptom Cause according to the official pages What to do
No Explorer Gadget icon Below Trainer level 20; an accessory is paired; it came out as a phased rollout in August Reach level 20; look under Item Bag, then Key Items; update the app
It stopped catching Daily catch limit reached; no Poké Balls left; Pokémon Storage full Wait for the next day; get more Poké Balls; transfer Pokémon to free space
It skips some Pokémon Pokémon not yet in your Pokédex, and mighty Pokémon, are never targeted Catch those yourself
Pokémon ran away It throws one Poké Ball; a failed catch makes the Pokémon flee Tap the pink-marked Pokémon in time to catch it yourself
Not spinning PokéStops Item Bag full (a warning shows on the icon and in the summary); daily spin limit reached; the stop is outside your interaction radius Free up bag space; walk closer; wait for the next day
It shut off and won’t turn back on You switched to a Pokémon GO Plus + or other accessory while it was running It can be used again the next day
Very few catches in the background The gadget needs you to keep moving with your phone on you Walk at a casual pace with the phone on you

General app fixes from the Help Center

If none of the conditions above fit, try the Help Center’s general troubleshooting steps for Android and iPhone, in this order. They are written for the whole app, not for the gadget specifically:

  1. Update Pokémon GO to the latest version (Google Play Store or App Store).
  2. Check your internet connection, and try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  3. Refresh your game data: Settings > Advanced Settings > Refresh Game Data. This can switch Adventure Sync off, so check it afterwards.
  4. Set your phone’s date and time to update automatically.
  5. Android: clear the Pokémon GO cache, and make sure background data isn’t restricted for Google Play Services and the Google Play Store. iPhone: clear Safari’s website data.
  6. Uninstall and reinstall Pokémon GO. The Help Center says your progress is stored online and isn’t lost.

The Help Center also recommends turning on permissions such as Location: on Android go to Settings > Apps > Pokémon GO > Permissions, and on iPhone go to Settings > Apps > Pokémon GO. If the problem continues, report it through the Help Center’s Report a Bug page.

Community-reported: “it wasted all my Poké Balls”

This one isn’t an official issue, but players have run into it. In August, Mein-MMO reported on a Reddit post from a player whose gadget spent 35 Poké Balls on nothing but Wurmple. Other players pointed out that it was a Wurmple Spotlight Hour, so the gadget simply caught what was spawning. Before you switch it on, check the events running now; our Pokémon GO November 2026 events guide lists them.

FAQ

Can the Explorer Gadget use Great Balls or Ultra Balls?

No. It only throws regular Poké Balls, and it can’t use Berries. To use a better ball on a Pokémon it has marked, tap the Pokémon before the gadget’s window runs out.

How long does the Explorer Gadget last?

It runs until it hits its daily catch and spin limits, your Pokémon Storage or Item Bag fills up, or you pause it. The limits depend on your Trainer level, but the official pages don’t publish the numbers. After the limit, it stops until the next day.

Does the Explorer Gadget work with the app open?

Yes, since the November 2, 2026 update. Before that, it only worked while Pokémon GO wasn’t actively open. Now a pink Poké Ball icon shows what it is catching or spinning while you play.

Why is my Explorer Gadget not showing up?

You need Trainer level 20 or higher. If you have a Pokémon GO Plus + or other accessory paired, start the gadget from Key Items in your Item Bag. If you still can’t find it, update the app; the gadget launched as a phased rollout in August.

Is the Explorer Gadget allowed, or is it an auto-catcher cheat?

It’s an official feature built into Pokémon GO, announced on the game’s own news page and documented in its Help Center. It isn’t a third-party tool.
