All 12 trades from Pocket Egg to Claim Check: where each happens, the 3-, 3- and 4-minute timers, the 3-day wait and what we know about the Switch 2 remake.

To get Biggoron’s Sword in Ocarina of Time, adult Link has to finish a 12-step trading sequence. It starts with the Pocket Egg from the Cucco Lady in Kakariko Village and ends when Biggoron on the Death Mountain summit takes your Claim Check and hands over the sword. Three deliveries in the middle are timed (3, 3 and 4 minutes), and the last step makes you wait three in-game days. Here is the full Biggoron’s Sword trading sequence in order, as it works in the original game, with every location, timer and requirement.

The Switch 2 remake is out now in the UK and Europe and unlocks at 05:00 UTC (12:00 AM ET) in North America. Everything below comes from the 1998 Nintendo 64 game, and we use Nintendo’s original item names. Where the Switch 2 version differs, we say so only if Nintendo or a named reviewer has confirmed it. We’ll check the remake’s trading quest against this guide after launch.

Quick answer

  • Who can do it: adult Link only. The whole chain happens after the seven-year jump.
  • Order: Pocket Egg, Pocket Cucco, Cojiro, Odd Mushroom, Odd Potion, Poacher’s Saw, Broken Goron’s Sword, Prescription, Eyeball Frog, World’s Finest Eye Drops, Claim Check, Biggoron’s Sword.
  • Timed trades: Odd Mushroom (3 minutes), Eyeball Frog (3 minutes) and World’s Finest Eye Drops (4 minutes). Playing a warp song spoils a timed item instantly.
  • Bring: Epona makes the timed runs much easier. You need Epona or the Longshot to cross Gerudo Valley, and Blue Fire to thaw King Zora.
  • Reward: an unbreakable two-handed sword that does twice the Master Sword’s damage, but you can’t use a shield while it’s equipped.

What to do before you start

None of the chain is required to finish the game, but a little prep saves you failed deliveries:

  • Get Epona. VGC’s guide calls her the minimum. The timed runs cross Hyrule Field, and some fences on the way to Lake Hylia are easier to jump on horseback.
  • Get Blue Fire access. Zora’s Domain is frozen in the adult era. You’ll need Blue Fire from the Ice Cavern to thaw King Zora, according to VGC. Zelda Wiki adds that he gives you the Zora Tunic once he’s thawed.
  • Get the Deku Nut upgrade first. According to Zelda Wiki, in the original N64 game, picking up the Poacher’s Saw permanently locks the Deku Nut capacity upgrade from the Deku Scrubs at the Forest Stage. It’s a code bug that the 3DS version fixed. If you want that upgrade, get it before step 6.
  • Plan your timed routes without warping. Zelda Wiki and VGC both say a warp song spoils a timed item instantly. If something does spoil, the same character gives it to you again.

Steps 1-3: Pocket Egg, Pocket Cucco and Cojiro (Kakariko Village)

Pocket Egg. As adult Link, talk to the Cucco Lady in Kakariko Village. As a child, she’s the one who gave you a bottle for rounding up her Cuccos. Now she has bred a “Pocket Cucco” that doesn’t set off her allergies, and she gives you its egg.

Pocket Cucco. The egg hatches after a full in-game day. You don’t have to do anything special, just keep playing until the day passes.

Wake Talon. Talon, who ran Lon Lon Ranch until Ingo took it over, is fast asleep in Kakariko. VGC places him in the house next to the village staircase. Use the Pocket Cucco on him to wake him up. VGC notes that if you’ve already freed Epona, waking him sends Talon back to the ranch.

Cojiro. Take the Pocket Cucco back to the Cucco Lady. She swaps it for Cojiro, a rare blue Cucco that belonged to her missing brother and has stopped crowing since he left.

Steps 4-6: Odd Mushroom, Odd Potion and Poacher’s Saw (Lost Woods and Kakariko)

Odd Mushroom. The brother, called the Master Craftsman’s Son, is in the Lost Woods. Zelda Wiki puts him asleep beside the tree stump where the Skull Kid played his flute when Link was a child. Show him Cojiro and he gives you the Odd Mushroom for “the old hag in the potion shop in Kakariko Village.”

Odd Potion (3-minute timer). The mushroom spoils after three minutes, so leave the forest and head straight for Kakariko. The shop you want is Granny’s Potion Shop at the back of the village, not the main potion shop. According to Zelda Wiki, as an adult you get in through the back door of the main potion shop or by using the Hookshot from the windmill, and Granny’s shop is open at night. She brews the Odd Potion for free. (The 3DS version renamed it the Odd Poultice.)

Poacher’s Saw. Take the potion back to the same stump in the Lost Woods. The son is gone. Fado, a Kokiri girl, says he has become a Stalfos and takes the medicine. In return she gives you the saw he left behind. Zelda Wiki doesn’t list a timer for the Odd Potion, but VGC’s guide calls this leg timed too, so don’t hang around.

Steps 7-8: Broken Goron’s Sword and Prescription (Gerudo Valley and Death Mountain)

Broken Goron’s Sword. The saw belongs to the Master Craftsman, the boss of the carpenters. He’s camped at the broken bridge in Gerudo Valley. Zelda Wiki lists two ways across: jump the gap on Epona or use the Longshot. Give him the saw and he hands over his broken Biggoron sword.

Prescription. Climb to the Death Mountain summit. Biggoron is next to the Great Fairy Fountain, and VGC says he stands up when you move over to the left side. He recognises the blade as his work, but he can’t fix it because the eruption has irritated his eyes. He gives you a Prescription to take to King Zora.

Steps 9-11: Eyeball Frog, Eye Drops and Claim Check (the timed run)

This is the hardest part of the quest. Fill your hearts and get Epona ready first.

  1. Eyeball Frog (3-minute timer). Show the Prescription to King Zora on his throne in Zora’s Domain. He has the ingredients but not the drops, and he gives you an Eyeball Frog to take to the doctor at the Lakeside Laboratory “before they spoil.”
  2. World’s Finest Eye Drops (4-minute timer). Ride to Lake Hylia and give the frog to the Lake Scientist in the lab. He wants to fry it until he learns it’s for Biggoron. Then he makes the drops and tells you to run to Death Mountain because they “won’t last long.”
  3. Claim Check. Get back to Biggoron before the four minutes run out. He uses the drops on the spot and gives you a Claim Check, and he asks you to come back after a few days.

Step 12: when to collect Biggoron’s Sword

According to Zelda Wiki’s quest table, the sword is ready three in-game days after you get the Claim Check. Biggoron himself only says “after a few days.” Come back to the summit after that and swap the Claim Check for Biggoron’s Sword. The in-game message calls it a blade “forged by a master smith” that “won’t break.”

Is Biggoron’s Sword worth it?

Here’s how it compares with the Master Sword and with the Giant’s Knife that Medigoron sells in Goron City, using Zelda Wiki’s figures for the original game.

Sword How to get it Damage Breaks? Shield
Master Sword Story (Temple of Time) Baseline No Yes
Giant’s Knife Medigoron, 200 Rupees (open his shop with bombs as a child) Same as Biggoron’s Yes, quickly No (two-handed)
Biggoron’s Sword This trading sequence Twice the Master Sword No No (two-handed)

The trade-off is defence. While it’s equipped, pressing the shield button just makes Link crouch, or block with the blade while Z-targeting, and Zelda Wiki says neither move stops damage. It also can’t land the final blow on Ganon, since only the Master Sword can do that. That makes it best for fights where you can dodge rather than block, and its long reach lets you hit from further away.

Is the trading sequence different in the Switch 2 remake?

Here’s what Nintendo and named reviewers who played before launch have said so far:

  • The quest is still in the game. In his Dexerto review, James Busby says the new Threads of Time feature helped him “remember the steps in the comically long-winded Biggoron’s Sword quest.”
  • A built-in quest tracker. On its official store page, Nintendo says the Threads of Time lets you “track your progress—and next objectives.” Dashing is also one of the remake’s new features (see our list of the 8 new features), which should help on the timed runs.
  • Some things have moved. In GamesRadar+’s review, Anna Koselke says not every heart piece or Gold Skulltula is where it was in the original. Characters and shortcuts on this route could have moved too.
  • Names may differ. VGC’s Dave Aubrey says his guide covers the N64, 3DS and Switch 2 versions, “but some item names have been altered.”

None of these sources says whether the 3-, 3- and 4-minute timers, the three-day wait or the Deku Nut bug changed in the remake. We’ll check those after launch and update this guide. Until then, assume the original rules.

FAQ

How long does the Biggoron’s Sword Claim Check take?

Three in-game days in the original game, according to Zelda Wiki. Biggoron’s own line is “after a few days.”

Can you use warp songs during the trading sequence?

Not while you’re carrying a timed item. Warping spoils the Odd Mushroom, the Eyeball Frog or the World’s Finest Eye Drops instantly. You can warp freely between the untimed steps.

What happens if an item spoils?

Go back to the character who gave it to you and you’ll get it again, so you only repeat that one leg.

Can young Link get Biggoron’s Sword?

No. The whole chain, from the Pocket Egg onward, takes place in the adult era.
