Minecraft has 18 armor trims. Each one comes from a smithing template that only generates in one structure, from the 25% Sentry chest in a pillager outpost to the 1.2% Silence chest in an ancient city. To apply a trim, put the template, an armor piece and a trim material in a smithing table. The material (one of 11) sets the colour. Once you find a template, you can copy it with 7 diamonds and one block. This list covers every template’s location, chance and copy recipe for Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.60. Checked November 4, 2026 against the Minecraft Wiki and Mojang’s changelogs.

Minecraft armor trims quick answer
- How many: 18 armor trim templates, plus the Netherite Upgrade template, for 19 smithing templates in total. No new trims have been added since Bolt and Flow in 1.21 (Tricky Trials).
- Easiest to get: Vex (50% per random-loot chest in a woodland mansion), Wild (33.3%, jungle temple), Sentry (25%, pillager outpost) and Eye (100% in stronghold library chests).
- Hardest: Silence, at 1.2% per ancient city chest. It’s the only trim with Epic rarity.
- How to apply: at a smithing table, combine the template, any helmet, chestplate, leggings or boots (turtle shells count) and a trim material. The template gets used up.
- How to duplicate: 7 diamonds, the template and its matching block (cobblestone, terracotta, netherrack, a breeze rod for Flow…) make 2 copies.
- Trim materials: amethyst, copper, diamond, emerald, gold, iron, lapis, quartz, netherite, redstone and resin brick.
- Stats: none. Mojang’s 1.20 notes say trims are “purely visual with no gameplay benefits.”

All 18 Minecraft armor trims and where to find them
Chances are per chest (or per vault, mob or brushed block). They come from the wiki’s loot tables, which list the same numbers for Java and Bedrock. “x2” means the template comes as a stack of two when it shows up. Rarity is the colour of the item name.
| Armor trim | Where to find it | Container | Chance | Rarity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sentry | Pillager outpost | Chest | 25% (x2) | Uncommon |
| Vex | Woodland mansion | Random-loot chests | 50% | Rare |
| Wild | Jungle temple (jungle pyramid) | Chest | 33.3% (x2) | Uncommon |
| Coast | Shipwreck | Treasure, map and supply chests | 16.7% (x2) | Uncommon |
| Dune | Desert pyramid | Chest | 14.3% (x2) | Uncommon |
| Wayfinder | Trail ruins | Rare suspicious gravel (brush it) | 8.3% | Uncommon |
| Raiser | Trail ruins | Rare suspicious gravel | 8.3% | Uncommon |
| Shaper | Trail ruins | Rare suspicious gravel | 8.3% | Uncommon |
| Host | Trail ruins | Rare suspicious gravel | 8.3% | Uncommon |
| Ward | Ancient city | Chest | 5% | Rare |
| Silence | Ancient city | Chest (not the ice box room) | 1.2% | Epic |
| Tide | Ocean monument | Elder guardian drop | 20% | Uncommon |
| Snout | Bastion remnant | Any chest (bridge, treasure, hoglin stable, generic) | 8.3% | Uncommon |
| Rib | Nether fortress | Chest | 6.7% | Uncommon |
| Eye | Stronghold | Library chest / altar chest | 100% / 10% | Rare |
| Spire | End city | Chest | 6.7% | Rare |
| Flow | Trial chambers | Ominous vault | 22.5% | Uncommon |
| Bolt | Trial chambers | Normal vault | 6.2% | Uncommon |
| Netherite Upgrade | Bastion remnant | Treasure chest / other chests | 100% / 10% | Uncommon |
Some patterns echo a mob or block from the structure they come from. Mojang’s Sofia Dankis gave the example that bastions hold “a piglin-inspired trim”: Snout, which looks like a piglin’s nose and ears.
Where to find each armor trim template: tips by structure
Overworld chests: Sentry, Vex, Wild, Coast and Dune
Start with these five. Every chest in the structure can roll the template, and four of them come in pairs, so one find already gives you a spare to duplicate. In woodland mansions, only the chests with random loot can hold Vex. The wiki notes that the allium room, sapling farm, tree-chopping room and fake End portal room chests always have the same fixed loot. Coast can turn up in all three shipwreck chests, so check every chest in a wreck.
Trail ruins: Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper and Host
Trail ruins have no chests. You get these four by brushing rare suspicious gravel, and each one has a 1-in-12 chance per rare block. According to the wiki, most structure pieces turn nine gravel into six common and three rare suspicious gravel, so dig out the whole buried area, not just the tower top. You need a brush (a feather, a copper ingot and a stick, stacked in a column). Don’t dig it with a shovel: suspicious gravel drops nothing when it breaks, and it also breaks if it falls.

Ancient city: Ward and Silence
Ward has a 5% chance per chest. Silence has 1.2%, the lowest drop rate of any trim. When it was added in 2023, Mojang’s Kingbdogz called it “the hardest trim to get.” Silence is also the only trim that covers most of the armor’s surface in the trim material, which is why players want it. Ancient cities have many chests, but their sculk shriekers can summon the warden, so sneak between them.
Ocean monument: Tide
The ocean monument has no chests. Instead, each of its three elder guardians has a 20% chance to drop Tide. Looting doesn’t raise that chance, and the guardian doesn’t need to be killed by a player. Three elder guardians spawn per monument and never respawn, so each monument gives you three rolls. That works out to about a 49% chance of at least one Tide per monument.
Nether: Snout, Rib and the Netherite Upgrade
Snout has an 8.3% chance in every bastion remnant chest. Rib has a 6.7% chance per Nether fortress chest and is “intentionally darker than other armor trims” (Mojang marked the bug report as working as intended). The Netherite Upgrade isn’t a trim, but it shares the system. You need one to turn diamond gear into netherite. It’s guaranteed in the bastion treasure room chest and has a 10% chance in the other bastion chests.
Stronghold and End city: Eye and Spire
Every stronghold library chest has an Eye template. Altar chests have a 10% chance. Spire has a 6.7% chance per End city chest. Grab it when you go looting for elytra and shulker shells.
Trial chambers: Flow and Bolt
Both arrived in 1.21 Tricky Trials. Bolt has a 6.2% chance per normal vault, which you open with a trial key. Flow has a 22.5% chance per ominous vault, which you open with an ominous trial key during a Trial Omen. The wiki puts that at about one Flow template per 4.4 ominous vaults. These are the same vaults that hold the heavy core for a Minecraft mace, so you can farm both on one trip. In Java, each vault has an 80% chance of rare loot, compared with 20% in Bedrock. But Bolt and Flow come from a separate “unique” roll, so their chances are the same in both editions.

How to duplicate armor trim smithing templates
Duplication is how you trim a full set without finding four templates. Mojang’s recipe from the 1.20 notes is 7 diamonds + 1 smithing template + 1 block of the template’s material = 2 templates. Put the template in the top middle slot and the material block in the center, then fill the other seven slots with diamonds. You keep a copy, so one template is enough for unlimited copies. Trimming a full set takes 3 extra copies, which means 21 diamonds.
| Template | Duplication material | Extra options in Bedrock only |
|---|---|---|
| Sentry, Vex, Coast | Cobblestone | – |
| Wild | Mossy cobblestone | – |
| Dune | Sandstone | Smooth, cut or chiseled sandstone |
| Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper, Host | Terracotta | – |
| Ward, Silence | Cobbled deepslate | – |
| Tide | Prismarine | Prismarine bricks or dark prismarine |
| Snout | Blackstone | – |
| Rib, Netherite Upgrade | Netherrack | – |
| Eye | End stone | – |
| Spire | Purpur block | Purpur pillar |
| Flow | Breeze rod (the only non-block material) | – |
| Bolt | Block of copper or waxed block of copper | – |
The Bedrock-only blocks are the one crafting difference between the editions. The wiki tracks it as bug report MCPE-172711.
Minecraft armor trim materials and colours
The template sets the pattern and the material sets the colour. There are 11 trim materials. The hex code is the tooltip text colour the wiki lists for each one.
| Trim material | Tooltip colour | Darker palette on matching armor |
|---|---|---|
| Amethyst shard | #9A5CC6 (purple) | – |
| Copper ingot | #B4684D (orange-brown) | Yes, on copper armor |
| Diamond | #6EECD2 (aqua) | Yes, on diamond armor |
| Emerald | #11A036 (green) | – |
| Gold ingot | #DEB12D (gold) | Yes, on golden armor |
| Iron ingot | #ECECEC (light grey) | Yes, on iron armor |
| Lapis lazuli | #416E97 (blue) | – |
| Nether quartz | #E3D4C4 (off-white) | – |
| Netherite ingot | #625859 (dark grey) | Yes, on netherite armor |
| Redstone dust | #971607 (red) | – |
| Resin brick | #FC7812 (orange) | – |
Resin brick became a trim material in Java 1.21.4 and Bedrock 1.21.50 (The Garden Awakens). Copper armor (added in Java 1.21.9) can be trimmed like any other armor. When you use lapis lazuli as a trim material, the game calls it just “Lapis”, the only place that short name appears.
How to put armor trims on armor
- Craft a smithing table (2 iron ingots on 4 planks).
- Put the armor trim template in the first slot.
- Add any helmet, chestplate, leggings or boots. Leather, chainmail, iron, gold, copper, diamond, netherite and turtle shells all work.
- Add a trim material. The armor stand in the smithing table window shows a preview of the result.
- Take the trimmed piece. The template is used up, so duplicate it first if you plan to trim a whole set.
Each piece can only have one trim. Applying a new template replaces the old pattern. Two side effects are worth knowing. Gold trim doesn’t calm piglins unless the armor itself is golden, and a netherite trim doesn’t make iron or diamond armor fireproof.
Best looking armor trim combos (our picks)
These are our picks, not official rankings. They’re based on the patterns and palettes in the wiki’s renders and Mojang’s screenshots.
- Silence + amethyst on iron: Mojang uses this combination in its own artwork of Alex. Silence shows more trim colour than any other pattern, so a bright material really stands out.
- Snout + gold on netherite: a piglin-themed set for a Nether base. Just remember the gold trim alone won’t keep piglins calm.
- Rib + quartz on netherite: Rib is drawn darker on purpose, and off-white quartz gives a skeleton look on dark armor.
- Bolt + copper on netherite: one of Mojang’s own screenshots shows copper trims on netherite armor. The warm orange contrasts well with the dark base.
- Coast + diamond on diamond: a matching material switches to the darker palette, which gives a subtle two-tone look instead of a clash.
Armor trim achievements and commands
Smithing with Style (achievement in Bedrock, advancement in Java) asks you to apply these eight templates at least once: Spire, Snout, Rib, Ward, Silence, Vex, Tide and Wayfinder. Crafting a New Look (Java) unlocks the first time you trim armor at a smithing table. If cheats are on, the item IDs are the trim name plus _armor_trim_smithing_template in both editions, for example /give @s silence_armor_trim_smithing_template. The Netherite Upgrade is netherite_upgrade_smithing_template. Our Minecraft commands list covers /give syntax for Java and Bedrock. Remember that turning cheats on disables achievements in Bedrock.
FAQ
What is the rarest armor trim in Minecraft?
Silence. It has a 1.2% chance per ancient city chest and is the only trim with Epic rarity. Ward, Eye, Vex and Spire are Rare, and the rest are Uncommon.
Do armor trims give any bonuses?
No. Mojang’s changelog says trims are purely visual. If you want better stats, look at enchantments instead. Our Minecraft enchantments list ranks the best ones for each armor piece.
Can you get armor trim templates from villagers?
No. Templates only come from structure loot, elder guardians and trial chamber vaults. Villagers do sell diamond armor you can trim, though. See our Minecraft villager trades chart for the armorer’s offers.
Can you remove an armor trim?
Not directly. You can only replace it by applying a different template, which overwrites the old pattern.
Are there new armor trims in 2026?
No. Mojang’s Java 26.1-26.3 and Bedrock 26.0-26.60 changelogs only include trim bug fixes and resource pack changes. The newest trims are still Flow and Bolt from 1.21. If you want something new to show off a trimmed set on, our Minecraft happy ghast guide covers the latest flying mount.
