The best Dressmaker tips for beginners come down to three habits: read every number on the commission card before you buy fabric, cut each pattern piece on the grain, and sew slowly. Dressmaker is a $14.99 sewing sim from Cozy Lives (published by Free Lives) that launched on September 21, 2026 for Windows and Mac on Steam. As of October 22 it has 18,126 user reviews, 98.7% of them positive. It’s not on Switch or phones yet. Below you’ll find tips for your first commissions, the ten clients you’ll sew for, and where things stand with ports and mods.

Quick answer: Dressmaker tips for beginners
- Read the whole brief first. Each commission lists a minimum Quality, style targets (Professional, Romantic, Eveningwear and so on) and a budget in gold. Some briefs also set limits such as “Use only black”.
- Hit the style targets in the sketchbook before you buy anything. Changing bodices, sleeves and skirts costs nothing. Fabric you’ve already cut can’t be uncut.
- Buy fabric for its tags, not its looks. Every fabric shows tags with numbers, and cheap fabric often does the job.
- Cut on the grain. Guides agree that an off-grain piece caps the dress’s quality, however clean your sewing is.
- Sew slowly and use the options menu. Sewing Assist, Fast Trim Placement and Less Animation make the fiddly parts easier.
- Rotate between clients. Story requests unlock across characters, so a missing commission often depends on someone else’s storyline.

How a Dressmaker commission works
Every order follows the same steps, and there’s no timer. A client walks in and you measure their bust, waist and hips, then set the mannequin to match. Next you choose the bodice, collar, sleeves and skirt in your sketchbook. You buy fabric and trims at The International Emporium, cut the pieces in the cutting room, stitch them on the sewing machine and decorate the dress. Finally you take a photo and hand it over. The Steam page describes the same loop and adds that you can also sell ready-made dresses from your shop window.
Your first client is Rose, the town librarian, who answers your advert in the Town Herald. In Siliconera’s review, that tutorial order asks for Professional 40 and Quality 60, for no more than 200 gold. Siliconera points out that Black or Brown Wool Pinstripe already scores Professional 50 and costs only 10 gold a metre. Lesson one: the cheap fabric with the right tag beats the pretty expensive one.

Beginner tips for your first commissions
1. Treat the requirements card as a checklist
The requirements card lists each target with a star, and the same stars appear next to the matching tags in the sketchbook’s style list. Your progress shows as bars while you design. Look out for maximum limits as well as minimums. KeenGamer’s character guide warns that maximums are easy to overshoot. It also points out that a colour on the list doesn’t mean the whole dress has to be that colour unless the brief gives a percentage. Since the October 14 update (Build 443), small panels such as collars and sleeves count for more when the game checks colour and fabric requirements. Old guides that tell you to cover the whole skirt in one colour may now be overkill.
2. Settle the design while it’s still free
The sketchbook is where mistakes cost nothing. You can try fabric swatches on the sketch, watch the style bars move, and check the estimated fabric length shown under the pattern (one official screenshot reads “Approx. 3.85m fabric required”) before you spend any gold. The patch notes mention a few features that are easy to miss. You can page through the sketchbook to see your other open commissions. Clicking a component’s name shows every option for that slot. Since Build 443 there’s also a Randomise button for when you’re stuck for ideas.
3. Shop with the budget in mind
Fabric is sold by the metre, and each roll lists its tags. In one official screenshot, Dusty Pink Silk carries Simple 100, Elegant 100, Formal 100 and Eveningwear 100, and 2 metres cost 100 gold. Silk and velvet use up budget quickly. Guides from All Things How and KeenGamer suggest using up leftover fabric and patterns you already own, and saving some gold for trims a client has asked for. Use the Emporium’s tag filter to show only fabrics that score in the styles you need.

4. Cut on the grain and pack the pieces tightly
The Steam page puts it simply: how you place and cut your fabric is how it looks on the finished dress, whether a piece follows the grain or is cut on the bias. Each piece has a grain arrow, and the cutting room shows a “Grain Quality” percentage for it. Check that it reads 100% before you cut. According to All Things How, an off-grain piece is the usual reason a cleanly sewn dress never reaches 100% quality. The same guide says a bias cut is a turn of about 45 degrees and drapes more softly. Lay out the large pieces first and fill the gaps with small ones, so you have leftovers for the next order.
Build 443 added some safety features. The scissors now discard fabric only when you press the “discard fabric” button; the developers made that change after one player lost 5 metres of velvet to a misclick. There’s also a button that collects every cut panel at once.
5. Sew slowly, and turn on Sewing Assist if you need it
At the sewing machine, the official controls are Space to sew, A/D or the mouse to rotate the fabric, and W/S to change speed. A percentage dial next to the needle tracks how accurately you’re stitching. Slow down before curves and corners. All Things How suggests letting go to reposition rather than forcing a seam that’s going wrong. Siliconera found the optional Sewing Assist and accessory rotation settings helpful, especially on a handheld PC. Since Build 410 you can also change the thread colour by clicking the spools.

6. Decorate last, and use the new trim tools
Buttons, bows, lace and appliqué go on at the end, once the dress already meets the brief. Trim placement is the part players complained about most, and the studio has said so itself. In Build 443 it added a “Fast Trim Placement” option, a button that duplicates a trim, rotating the mannequin while you place trim, and smoother zoom (Ctrl + mouse wheel, right-click and drag to pan). You’ll also find a “Less Animation” toggle and an option to hide the red outline in the settings.
7. Get paid even when it goes wrong
Not every dress needs to be perfect. Since the first patch (Build 403), a client who accepts a commission still pays even if the dress doesn’t meet every target. You ring the bell on the desk to call the next customer. The button now labelled “Sell as off-rack” in the photo studio sells a finished dress from your shop instead of handing it to a client, which is handy for designs you made for fun.
8. Rotate between clients to unlock the story
KeenGamer recommends working through several clients at once instead of finishing one character’s storyline at a time, because many requests unlock from other characters’ stories. Alice’s late requests need progress with Vivian, Marie and Prudence, for example. Excellent results also raise friendship faster. If a commission you expected hasn’t shown up, finish the linked story requests first.
Dressmaker characters: the 10 clients
In its May development update the studio planned ten clients, and the finished game’s achievement list names all ten. Each one has an achievement for completing her major commissions. The commission counts and style leanings below come from KeenGamer’s guide.
| Client | Commissions | Styles she tends to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Rose (the librarian, your first client) | 8 | Professional, Simple, Warm, later Glamour |
| Prudence (Prudence Mortimer) | 10 | Glamour and Elegant, practical workwear, deliberately uncomfortable dresses |
| Priya | 10 | Romantic, later Formal, Gothic and Glamour |
| Alice | 9 | Gothic, later Romantic, Cute and Risqué |
| Edith | 9 | Glamour and Risqué |
| Fiona | 9 | Cute, Playful, Professional, theatrical event wear |
| Adora | 8 | Romantic, Playful, Formal |
| Dorothy | 8 | Eclectic, unusual fabrics and accessories |
| Marie | 8 | Eclectic, from wedding to funeral wear |
| Vivian | 8 | Gothic, Risqué, velvet and dark colours |
The achievements also name group events such as the Duke’s funeral, the Spring Fete, the Twillford Pet Show, Alice’s séance, a summer ball, an opera gala and a coronation. There are also commissions that arrive by pigeon, and an achievement (“You’ve Got Mail”) for finishing Dorothy’s first dress and getting Berty. Steam’s global achievement stats show how long the campaign is. On October 22, 82.4% of players had finished the Duke’s funeral dresses and 78.4% had made a 100% quality dress. Only 10.0% had finished the Summer Ball and 7.2% the coronation.
Is Dressmaker on Switch or mobile?
Not yet. In its launch post on September 21, the studio said it is “planning mobile and Switch ports” because players kept asking for them. Cozy Lives hasn’t given a date, a price or any other platform since then. For now it’s PC and Mac only, and the Steam Deck works as a handheld option. Watch out for unrelated “Dressmaker” apps on other stores: as we noted in our list of games like Dressmaker, the Microsoft Store has lookalike listings that Cozy Lives didn’t make. If you’re waiting for the Switch version, our best cozy games on Switch 2 will tide you over.
Does Dressmaker have mods?
Yes, but they’re unofficial. Dressmaker has no Steam Workshop, and we found no statement from Cozy Lives about official mod support. Players have built their own scene on Nexus Mods instead: the Dressmaker section listed 628 mods on October 22. The most endorsed is “Yuuma’s Dressmaker ModLoader”, a BepInEx-based loader for custom content packs. Many of the popular mods are fabric and accessory packs, such as marbled silks, sequin fabrics, watercolour cottons and gem collections. Transparent fabrics are still on the developers’ to-do list, and fan mods already try to add them. Since none of this is official, back up your saves before installing anything. Updates like Build 443 changed how trims and scores work, so a mod may need its own update after a patch.
What’s coming next for Dressmaker
The developers’ post-launch plans include an online challenge mode where players vote on each other’s designs, transparent fabrics, proper controller support, and the mobile and Switch ports. In the meantime, the free updates keep adding content. Build 443 added two skirt variants, border-print cottons, silver and pastel pink lace, gradient silks, silver accessories, and spooky Black Dagger beaded trim and Widow’s Lace trim, just in time for Halloween. Items unlock retroactively if you’re past the point where they appear. If you’re making a costume, our Dress To Impress Halloween 2026 guide covers the other big fashion game this month. FAQ
Is there a free Dressmaker demo?
There’s no demo on Steam, but the original prototype is still on itch.io as a name-your-own-price download for Windows, macOS and Linux. The developers say it was made in about three weeks and is rougher than the full game.
Does Dressmaker work on Steam Deck?
Valve rates it “Playable”. It runs well, but some text is small and the on-screen button prompts don’t match the Deck’s buttons. Siliconera found Sewing Assist useful on a handheld.
Does Dressmaker have controller support?
Not officially. Steam lists no controller support. The game is designed for mouse and keyboard and offers a mouse-only option. The developers have called gamepad support and rebindable controls a high priority.
How long is Dressmaker?
The developers put the story commissions at about 35 hours, not counting dresses you make to sell off the rack.
The game crashes on my PC. Is there a fix?
In the Build 443 notes, the developers said some crashes are still under investigation, and that uninstalling “OMEN gaming hub” has fixed the problem for many players.
