20 Minecraft mods with 26.3 builds checked Oct 31, 2026: Sodium, Xaero’s maps, JEI and more, with loaders, Modrinth downloads and Fabric/NeoForge installs.

The best Minecraft mods for 26.3 right now are Sodium and Lithium for speed, Xaero’s Minimap and World Map for navigation, JEI and Jade for recipes and info, and Distant Horizons for huge view distances. Every one of the 20 mods below has a file tagged for Java Edition 26.3 on Modrinth, checked through Modrinth’s public API on October 31, 2026 (12:20 UTC), with the loader it runs on and its Modrinth download count. Bedrock players can’t use these Java mods; they get add-ons instead, covered further down.

Quick answer

  • Minecraft version: Java 26.3 is the current release (September 15, 2026, per Mojang’s version manifest). 26.4 is still in snapshots, and mods built for 26.3 won’t load there.
  • Loaders: Fabric Loader 0.20.1 and NeoForge 26.3.0.100 are the latest stable 26.3 builds. A mod only works on the loader it was built for.
  • Start with: Sodium + Lithium (performance), Xaero’s Minimap (map), JEI (recipes), AppleSkin (hunger info).
  • Big mods not on 26.3 yet: Create, Farmer’s Delight and EMI still top out at 1.21.1.
  • Bedrock (Xbox, Switch, PlayStation, mobile): no Java mods; use add-ons from the in-game Marketplace or .mcaddon files.
  • Only download from Modrinth or CurseForge. Mod reupload sites are a common malware source.

Best Minecraft mods for 26.3 (checked October 31, 2026)

“Latest 26.3 file” is the newest full release for 26.3 on each mod’s Modrinth page; a beta is marked when that is all there is. Download counts are Modrinth’s all-time totals for the project (all versions), so they show popularity, not 26.3 installs. Most of these mods are also on CurseForge, where the counts differ.

Performance mods: Sodium, Lithium, Entity Culling, ImmediatelyFast

Install these four first. Sodium replaces the rendering engine to raise frame rates and cut micro-stutter. Its newest 26.3 file, 0.9.3-beta.1 (October 15), is a beta; 0.9.2 is the stable pick. Lithium optimizes physics, mob AI and block ticking without changing vanilla mechanics, according to its page, and also works on servers without clients needing it. Entity Culling uses spare CPU threads to work out which mobs and block entities you can’t see and stops drawing them. ImmediatelyFast batches the draw calls for entities, particles, text and the HUD. All four are client-friendly and don’t add items, so they’re safe in any world.

Map mods: Xaero’s Minimap and World Map

Xaero’s Minimap puts a vanilla-style rotating map in the corner with mobs, players and waypoints. Xaero’s World Map adds a full-screen map that fills in as you explore; the two work best together. Both got 26.3 updates on October 25 for Fabric, NeoForge and Forge. The author warns on both pages not to use the unaffiliated “XaeroPlus” add-on, which they say causes crashes.

Recipe and info mods: JEI, Jade, AppleSkin, Zoomify

JEI lists every item; hover and press R for recipes or U for uses. Version 31.14.0.72 (October 16) is the stable 26.3 file; newer 31.17 betas are posted too (the latest on October 31). Jade shows a small tooltip naming the block or mob under your crosshair, and some details (chest contents, bees in a hive) need it on the server too. AppleSkin shows hunger, saturation and how much a food restores. Zoomify adds a zoom key (default C); its page notes you may need to clear a conflicting vanilla keybind first.

Visual mods: Iris, Distant Horizons, 3D Skin Layers, LambDynamicLights

Iris loads shader packs and needs Sodium; our best Minecraft shaders for 26.3 guide lists the packs that run on it. Distant Horizons draws simplified far-away terrain for 256+ chunk views at a low cost, and one jar covers both Fabric and NeoForge. With Iris, it only works with shader packs built with Distant Horizons support. 3D Skin Layers turns the flat outer skin layer into a 3D model and switches back to 2D beyond 12 blocks. LambDynamicLights makes held torches and dropped glowing items light up the area around them.

Multiplayer: Simple Voice Chat

Simple Voice Chat adds proximity voice with push-to-talk, voice activation and password-protected groups. The 26.3 builds are betas (2.6.27, October 28), and the mod needs a special setup on the server, as its page explains, so check its wiki before inviting friends.

Survival and world mods: Waystones, Biomes O’ Plenty, Terralith, Traveler’s Backpack, VeinMiner

Waystones lets you teleport between activated waystones or with warp scrolls. On 26.x it also needs the Balm and Shogi libraries. Biomes O’ Plenty adds 50+ biomes across the Overworld, Nether and End and needs GlitchCore. Terralith adds almost 100 biomes made only from vanilla blocks; the mod version needs Lithostitched, or you can use the data pack version. Traveler’s Backpack adds wearable, upgradeable backpacks. VeinMiner breaks a whole ore vein in one go, and because it runs on the server, players don’t need it installed. These change world generation or add items, so start a new world (or back up your old one) before adding them. Both biome mods add new terrain types, so seeds from our best Minecraft seeds for 26.3 list will look different with them installed.

Popular Minecraft mods that aren’t on 26.3 yet

Some of the biggest content mods haven’t moved to the 26.x versions. On October 31, their newest Modrinth files were:

Mod Newest file Minecraft version
Create 6.0.10 (Apr 21, 2026) 1.21.1
Farmer’s Delight 1.3.4 (Aug 29, 2026) 1.21.1
EMI 1.1.24 (May 13, 2026) 1.21.1

If you want these, make a separate 1.21.1 profile instead of mixing versions. Mods built for one Minecraft version usually won’t load on another.

How to install Minecraft mods on Java 26.3

You need Minecraft: Java Edition, a mod loader (Fabric or NeoForge) and mod files that match both your game version and loader. The steps below follow the official Fabric and NeoForge player guides.

Easiest way: a mod launcher

The free Modrinth App installs the loader, the mods and their dependencies for you, and updates them with one click. CurseForge has its own app for its catalog. If you’d rather use the official Minecraft Launcher, follow one of the two methods below.

Install Fabric (official installer)

  1. Close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Download the installer from fabricmc.net. On Windows, the .exe version doesn’t need Java installed because it uses the Java bundled with the official launcher.
  3. Run it, pick Minecraft 26.3, keep “Create Profile” ticked and click Install.
  4. Download Fabric API (0.165.0+26.3, October 23). Most Fabric mods need it.
  5. Put the mod .jar files in your mods folder (paths below), open the launcher, pick the Fabric profile and press Play.

Install NeoForge

  1. Close the Minecraft Launcher.
  2. Download the installer .jar for 26.3 from neoforged.net. Unlike the Fabric .exe, it needs Java on your PC. Mojang’s 26.3 version file lists Java 25.
  3. Run it, keep “Install client” selected and click Proceed.
  4. In the launcher’s Installations tab, NeoForge’s docs recommend creating a new installation with its own game directory, outside the standard .minecraft folder, so mods stay away from your vanilla worlds.
  5. Start that profile once. A mods folder appears in the game directory; drop your NeoForge mod files in it.

Before updating a loader or mods, NeoForge’s guide says to back up your world: copy its folder from saves somewhere safe.

Where is the Minecraft mods folder?

System Default mods folder
Windows %appdata%.minecraftmods
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods
Linux ~/.minecraft/mods

Paste the path into the address bar of your file explorer. If you made a NeoForge profile with its own game directory, use the mods folder inside that directory instead.

Minecraft mods on Bedrock, Xbox and mobile: add-ons

Bedrock Edition (Windows Bedrock, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, iOS and Android) can’t load Java .jar mods. It uses add-ons instead: behavior packs and resource packs. Microsoft’s creator docs describe the two file types you’ll see. A .mcaddon is a zip of packs or worlds “generally used to distribute Add-Ons”, and a .mcpack is a single zipped resource or behavior pack. Microsoft’s own tutorial shows that opening a downloaded pack file imports it into Minecraft.

  • Official source: the Marketplace inside Bedrock Edition, and Mojang’s add-ons page at minecraft.net/add-ons. Some Java mods have official Bedrock versions there. Biomes O’ Plenty’s Modrinth page, for example, links its Bedrock add-on on the Marketplace.
  • Experiments: if an add-on asks for an Experiments toggle, that’s a world setting. Mojang warns experimental worlds “might crash, break, or not work with future updates”, so use a copy.
  • No free Minecoins: Mojang’s Marketplace FAQ says there is no way to earn or get Minecraft Coins for free, and offers that claim otherwise may be scams. Skip any “free Marketplace” unlocker.

This list covers Java mods only. For Bedrock, browse add-ons in the Marketplace from the game’s main menu.

How to stay safe when downloading mods

Fabric’s own player guide says most authors publish on Modrinth and CurseForge, which check that files are what they claim and act on reports of malicious mods. It warns that many other “mod download” sites are malware traps. Stick to the official project pages linked above. We don’t link cracked launchers, injectors or repacks, and you should skip them too. Check that each file says 26.3 and your loader (Fabric or NeoForge), then add mods a few at a time so you can tell which one causes a crash.

What about Minecraft 26.4?

Minecraft 26.4 is still in testing: snapshot 6 came out on October 27 (see our Minecraft 26.4 snapshots roundup). On October 31, Fabric API had builds for the latest 26.4 snapshots, but Sodium, Iris, Lithium, Xaero’s Minimap and JEI had none. Stay on 26.3 for a modded world until your mods ship 26.4 releases.

FAQ

Are Minecraft mods free?

Yes. Every mod in this list is a free download on Modrinth. Bedrock Marketplace add-ons can be free or paid with Minecoins.

Can I use Fabric and NeoForge mods together?

No. Each mod file is built for a specific loader, so pick one and download that version of every mod. Some mods, such as Distant Horizons, ship one jar that works on both.

Can you get mods on Minecraft Xbox or Switch?

Not Java mods. Console and mobile players use Bedrock add-ons from the in-game Marketplace.

Do mods work with commands and seeds?

Yes. Vanilla commands still work in modded worlds (see our Minecraft commands list), but biome mods such as Biomes O’ Plenty and Terralith change what a seed generates.
