The best Minecraft modpacks in 2026 are Prominence II for a story RPG, All the Mods 10 for a huge questbook, Better MC for a vanilla-style adventure, Vault Hunters and Cobblemon for playing with friends, and Fabulously Optimized if you just want the newest version to run faster. All 16 packs below come with their Minecraft version, loader, newest file, downloads and license, taken from each pack’s official CurseForge or Modrinth page and checked on November 2, 2026, between 06:29 and 06:35 UTC.
Quick answer
- Best RPG modpack: Prominence II: Hasturian Era (Fabric 1.20.1, updated October 29).
- Best modpack with quests: All the Mods 10 (NeoForge 1.21.1) or FTB StoneBlock 4 for a guided underground start.
- Best to play with friends: Vault Hunters Third Edition, the Cobblemon Official Modpack or Society: Sunlit Valley.
- Best for solo vanilla-plus: Better MC BMC4, or Vanilla Perfected on the current 26.3 release.
- Versions: Java 26.3 is the current release (September 15, 2026, per Mojang’s version manifest), but most big content packs are still on 1.20.1 or 1.21.1. That’s normal; the launcher installs the right version for you.
- Free vs paid: every modpack here is a free download. Running your own server is free; hosted servers cost money (prices below).
- Java Edition only. Modpacks don’t run on Bedrock (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile).

Best RPG modpacks: Prominence II, Craft to Exile 2, DawnCraft, RLCraft
Prominence II: Hasturian Era is built around its own lore: you play one of the Flameborn of Vaaz trying to stop the Void’s invasion. Its page lists a story campaign told through interactive quests, two storylines (The Void’s Invasion and The Hasturian Era), a talent tree, artifact weapons you forge and upgrade, and, since v4.0, a capital city full of NPCs that changes as you progress. It’s on Fabric 1.20.1, and v4.1.6 arrived on October 29.
Craft to Exile 2 is for players who want Diablo or Path of Exile in Minecraft. It’s built on the Mine and Slash ARPG mod, with classes, a talent tree, ascendancies, dodge rolls, maps and “uber” bosses, and its page promises over 250 quests with a full campaign. DawnCraft lists a souls-like combat system (built with the Epic Fight mod), dozens of bosses with their own attack patterns, a complete quest line and a reputation system. RLCraft is the famous hardcore one on 1.12.2: a thirst bar, temperature and seasons, no healing from food, Ice and Fire dragons and Lycanite’s Mobs, according to its page. Its last release, v2.9.3, dates from June 2023, so expect an old game version, but its CurseForge page has the most downloads of any pack in this list.
Best Minecraft modpacks with quests: ATM10, StoneBlock 4, To the Sky, Better MC
All the Mods 10 is the big “everything” pack on NeoForge 1.21.1. Its team describes it as the basics of other big-name packs plus newer and lesser-known mods, and CurseForge tags it Exploration, Magic, Tech and Quests. FTB StoneBlock 4 starts you surrounded by stone with no sky. Progress runs through handcrafted Vaults (puzzle, combat and endurance trials) and holographic “Echoes” that act as guides, according to Feed The Beast. All the Mods 10: To the Sky turns ATM10 into skyblock: you start with a tree and a single block. Its quests are optional, and its page recommends 6-8 GB of RAM.
Better MC BMC4 is the most-favorited pack in this list. It keeps the vanilla feel but adds 100+ quests, overhauled world generation, thousands of new dungeons and structures, new bosses from Mowzie’s Mobs and Cataclysm, the Aether, rideable dragons and 350+ mods in total. A separate Fabric version (BMC2) is on Modrinth.

Best Minecraft modpacks to play with friends
Vault Hunters Third Edition says outright that it’s “better with friends”. You raid a dimension called The Vault for loot, gear and talents, aiming to collect all 25 artifacts to unlock the final challenge. Its own install guide sets memory to 8,192 MB. The Cobblemon Official Modpack is the Pokémon pick: catch, level and evolve Pokémon (its page says over 800), with battles run on the Pokémon Showdown engine. It’s MPL-2.0 licensed and updated to 1.8.4 on October 27.
Society: Sunlit Valley plays like Stardew Valley in Minecraft. Crops grow at 6 a.m., you fill bundles for rewards, dive into the Skull Cavern for iridium, raise fish ponds and run shops for up to 19 custom villagers. Homestead is a calmer, hand-built world with chapters of quests, farming and building. DeceasedCraft is an urban zombie apocalypse. Note its current 5.10 beta “cannot be completed” (two districts are missing) according to the authors, who point players wanting a full run to v5.5.5. A newer experimental build is Patreon-only.

Best modpacks for Minecraft 26.3 and low-end PCs
If you want the current release, pick from this group. Vanilla Perfected adds higher FPS, updated HUD and menus, mob animations and Minecraft Dungeons-style structures while keeping the vanilla feel. Fresh & Smooth makes the game more animated but is client-only, so it works on servers that don’t run it; its author warns it needs a capable PC, especially the CPU. Fabulously Optimized adds no content at all. It bundles performance mods such as Sodium and Lithium plus most OptiFine features (shaders, connected textures, zoom), so you can join any server. Its stable 14.1.2 build is for 26.2; the 26.3 build (15.0.0-beta.3, November 1) is still a beta.
Why most big modpacks aren’t on 26.3
Big packs need hundreds of mods to update before the pack can move, so they settle on one version for years: 1.20.1 (released June 2023) and 1.21.1 (August 2024) are the common bases right now. All the Mods 11 shows where things are heading. It’s an early pack for 26.1.2 on NeoForge (0.13.0-beta, October 27), and its page calls it a “super early alpha”. For single mods that already run on 26.3, see our best Minecraft mods for 26.3.
How to install a Minecraft modpack
You need Minecraft: Java Edition. Use one of these free launchers; each one installs the right Minecraft version, loader and mods for the pack.
CurseForge app
- Download the app from curseforge.com/download/app. CurseForge’s support pages list Windows 10 and 11, macOS 12 or newer, and official Ubuntu releases on Linux.
- Choose Minecraft Java Edition, then search for the pack in Browse. You can also click Install on the pack’s CurseForge web page and choose Open to send it to the app.
- Once it’s installed, press Play from My Modpacks. For big packs, raise the allocated memory in the app’s Minecraft settings first (Vault Hunters’ guide uses this slider).
Modrinth App
- Get the open-source launcher from modrinth.com/app.
- Search Modpacks in the app and install the one you want. It creates its own instance, so packs don’t clash.
- If a pack won’t start, Modrinth’s support guide says to open Settings, go to Java installations and click “Install recommended” for Java 21, 17 and 8.
Prism Launcher
In Prism Launcher, open Add Instance and pick CurseForge, Modrinth, FTB, ATLauncher or Technic from the sidebar to browse packs. Import takes a .zip or .mrpack you already downloaded, and FTB App Import picks up packs you installed in the FTB App.
How much RAM does a modpack need?
| Modpack | RAM its page recommends |
|---|---|
| RLCraft | 3-4 GB (the default 1 GB “is NOT enough”) |
| Craft to Exile 2 | At least 6 GB |
| All the Mods 10: To the Sky | At least 6-8 GB |
| DawnCraft | 6 GB minimum, 8-12 GB recommended |
| Vault Hunters Third Edition | 8,192 MB (8 GB) |
| DeceasedCraft | 8 GB recommended (5 GB minimum); server 10 GB+ |
How to play a modpack with friends: free vs paid servers
Everyone needs the same pack and the same pack version. Your options:
- Open to LAN (free): one player opens a single-player world to the local network. It’s good for people in the same house.
- Built-in world sharing (free): Better MC BMC4’s page lists “Built-in, Free World Sharing”.
- Host it yourself (free): most packs publish a server pack. On CurseForge it’s under the pack’s Files tab, and on November 2 we saw one for ATM10, To the Sky, Prominence II, Craft to Exile 2, DawnCraft, RLCraft, Vault Hunters, Society and DeceasedCraft. FTB packs have server files on feed-the-beast.com. You’ll need a PC that stays on and enough RAM.
- Paid hosting: on November 2, Modrinth Hosting listed Small ($10 a month billed quarterly, 4 GB RAM), Medium ($15, 6 GB) and Large ($20, 8 GB, “ideal for … modpacks”), plus custom plans from $5 a month. Vault Hunters, Prominence II and FTB name BisectHosting as their paid hosting partner.
- Not Realms: the Minecraft Wiki notes that mods and plugins can’t be installed on Java Realms.
Only download modpacks from official pages
Get packs from the CurseForge, Modrinth or FTB pages linked above, or through the launchers. Re-uploads on other sites can be outdated or tampered with, and most of these packs’ licenses don’t allow them. You also don’t need a paid tool: the CurseForge app, Modrinth App and Prism Launcher are all free, and you only need a Minecraft: Java Edition account.
FAQ
What is the best Minecraft modpack in 2026?
For a story RPG, Prominence II. For the most content and quests, All the Mods 10. If you want something close to vanilla but bigger, Better MC BMC4. All three were updated in October 2026.
What are the best Minecraft modpacks to play with friends?
Vault Hunters Third Edition, the Cobblemon Official Modpack and Society: Sunlit Valley are built for co-op. Vault Hunters and Society publish free server packs on CurseForge, and Modrinth marks the Cobblemon pack as required on both the client and the server, so everyone plays with the same mods.
Can I play modpacks on Bedrock?
No. Modpacks are for Java Edition, and the CurseForge app supports Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock uses add-ons and Marketplace content instead; our Minecraft mods guide covers Bedrock add-ons.
Can I add shaders or texture packs to a modpack?
Usually yes. Fabulously Optimized supports shaders out of the box, and many packs include Iris or OptiFine-style support. See our best Minecraft shaders and best Minecraft texture packs lists. Seeds from our best Minecraft seeds guide only work in vanilla-style packs, because packs that change world generation create different worlds.
