There are four ArcheAge Chronicles classes at launch: Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, each with two weapons and a separate trait tree for each weapon. The Warrior is the safest first pick for most players, because it’s the class XLGAMES is updating first (a female option and a third weapon, the Gladius, in December), and its parry-based kit works solo and in groups. That pick is our reading of XLGAMES’ official class posts and patch notes, not a ranking from play: Early Access opens today, November 3, at 3:00 p.m. PST (23:00 UTC), and nobody has played the launch build yet.
- Best for most players: Warrior (Longsword for parry and control, Greatsword for staying power). It gets the first post-launch update.
- Best ranged pick: Ranger with the Longbow (marks, roots and long-range shots), with the Hatchets for melee. Ranged soft-lock targeting is still being reworked.
- Best for a group front line: Berserker with Axe and Shield. The Warhammer is its burst-damage weapon.
- Best area damage: Mage with the Elemental Staff. Its Wall of Fire and the Wavesword were both nerfed or rebalanced before launch.
- Gender locks: every class is locked to one gender at launch. Only the Warrior’s is official (male; the female Warrior comes in December).
- No dedicated healer: none of the four official class introductions describes a healing role.
Launch times by region, price, PC specs and the pre-order costume are in our ArcheAge Chronicles release date and time guide. This page is only about choosing a class.

ArcheAge Chronicles classes at a glance
XLGAMES introduced one class at a time on its official X account (Warrior July 10, Ranger July 30, Mage September 17, Berserker September 28). MMORPG.com reported each one in detail. The Steam demo announcement confirmed the same four classes.
| Class | Weapon 1 | Weapon 2 | Range | Official pitch | Gender at launch |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Longsword | Greatsword | Melee | “Hold the Line. Break the Enemy”: offence plus solid defence | Male (official); female in December |
| Ranger | Hatchets | Longbow | Melee or long range | A hunter, either a lightning melee fighter or a precision archer | Not listed by XLGAMES* |
| Berserker | Axe and Shield | Warhammer | Melee | Charges enemy lines; the shield build holds, the hammer burns and shocks | Not listed by XLGAMES* |
| Mage | Elemental Staff | Wavesword | Long range or melee | Fire and lightning from afar, or ice and energy blades up close | Not listed by XLGAMES* |
*See the gender lock section below.
Weapons matter more than the class name. The progression deep dive says each weapon has its own trait tree, and trait points come from Raeven’s Coilstones guarded by bosses, not from levelling. Two players with the same weapon can end up with very different builds. XLGAMES’ example is the Greatsword: one player takes the damage branch (Armor Break, and Sunder becomes Sweeping Slash, which hits twice in a wider arc). The other takes the defensive branch for Pummel Strike, an attack you can use while guarding that gives you a damage-absorbing shield. You also aren’t stuck with one weapon. MeinMMO’s Karsten Scholz, who played the October demo as a Warrior, wrote that you switch between your class’s two weapons with Q.

Warrior: the safest ArcheAge Chronicles best class pick
According to XLGAMES’ class introduction (as reported by MMORPG.com), the Longsword has two paths. One is built on timing and control: parrying incoming hits and pressuring enemies, with Bladeburst striking enemies both up close and at range. The other is a “path of blood” that spends your own HP for big damage and then drains it back from enemies. The Greatsword pushes through enemies and absorbs hits to build Resolve, which powers finishers such as Final Cleave and Rampage.
Why it’s our default pick:
- It’s first in line for new content. Producer Ham’s October 29 letter says the December update adds the female Warrior and the Gladius, a third Warrior weapon. Other classes get theirs “one class at a time” afterwards.
- Parry is strong. Scholz found he could reliably parry most enemies in the demo, including world bosses, and called the parry window “quite long”. In XLGAMES’ PvP post, Creative Director Jay Lee says one of the most fun parts of the team’s PvP footage was parrying ranged attacks and reflecting them back.
- Launch notes help it. Disarming with Parry now costs less durability, according to the October 29 letter.
The catch: if you want a female melee character on day one, there isn’t one. The Warrior is male until the December update.
Ranger: best ranged class (with a melee option)
The Ranger’s two weapons play like two different classes. Based on XLGAMES’ introduction as reported by MMORPG.com:
| Weapon | Key skills | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Longbow | Rapid Fire, Fire Arrow, Ice Arrow, Aimed Shot, Crescent Kick | Rains arrows on a marked target, roots enemies with Ice Arrow, lands single big shots from range; Crescent Kick is a spinning counter that deflects an attack |
| Hatchets | Stormsplitter, Overcharge, Shocking Kick, Storm Chaser, Wind Blade | Dodge-and-strike melee that calls down lightning; Overcharge chains attacks once power peaks; Wind Blade deflects and then hits near and far |
Two things from XLGAMES make the Longbow a little riskier right now. Fire Arrow was reworked in the October 29 notes and the Hatchet was tuned. Ham also says soft-lock targeting for ranged attacks is on the new combat team’s list. That’s a fix to come, not a fix that’s already in. If you want the bow, expect aiming to change during Early Access.

Berserker: best front line for groups
The Berserker is the class closest to a tank, although XLGAMES never uses that word. Based on MMORPG.com’s report of the Berserker introduction:
- Axe and Shield: Reckless Destroyer pushes enemies back and builds their Bleed gauge, Shield Slam knocks them back, and Brutal Crash charges into the enemy line, staggers it and reduces the damage you take. Reel In uses a chain to pull you across gaps.
- Warhammer: Surging Heat follows a heavy blow with flame that builds Burn. Thundering Hurl throws the hammer charged with stored thunder. Meteor Hammer charges the weapon, and Galactic Impact releases all of that stored power at once.
Berserker took two launch changes: the Warhammer was tuned and Forceful Lunge was adjusted (October 29 letter). One limit for group play: Ham says the party aggro system still needs work, so a shield Berserker can’t count on holding a boss’s attention the way a tank does in a traditional MMO.
Mage: best area damage, most changed before launch
From the Mage introduction (MMORPG.com report; its headline calls the sword “Thundersword”, but XLGAMES’ patch notes call it the Wavesword):
- Elemental Staff: fire and lightning at range. Wall of Fire damages, staggers and builds Burn. Retain keeps a cast spell ready to reuse without the incantation, and each retained cast adds Energy Core stacks. At 10 stacks you can call down Shooting Star for heavy area damage.
- Wavesword: melee magic. Tidal Rend lunges in for three strikes and adds three area strikes with enough stacks. Thundersnow summons a blizzard that raises enemies’ Freeze gauge.
The Mage got the most launch changes. The October 29 letter cut Wall of Fire’s damage, made bosses resist max-HP-scaling skills more strongly, rebalanced the Wavesword’s attack power and scaling, and tuned the staff’s lightning skills. If a demo-era video crowned the Mage, that video is out of date.
Best class for solo vs group play
Ham’s July 2025 producer letter promised “smaller group sizes” than a traditional MMO, and it shows. The progression post says dungeons are instanced for you or a party of up to four and can be run solo. The October 29 letter adds that some solo-only dungeon sections can now be played in a party. Scholz found everything in the demo except world bosses manageable alone.
| If you mostly play… | Our pick | Why (from official notes) |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, new to action combat | Warrior (Longsword) | Parry and control, plus the most planned content |
| Solo, want to stay at range | Ranger (Longbow), Hatchets as a backup | Ice Arrow roots and Crescent Kick counters; you can swap to melee when targeting fails |
| In a party of 2-4 | Berserker (Axe and Shield) or Mage (Staff) | Damage reduction and knockbacks up front, area damage from behind |
| PvP channels | Warrior or Ranger (Hatchets) | The classes XLGAMES’ own developers played in their PvP footage; parry reflects ranged attacks |
| Want a female character now | Not the Warrior | The Warrior is male-only until December |
PvP is opt-in. According to the PvP post, standard channels have no player combat. In PvP channels, everyone outside your party and guild can attack you, and monster kills give 10 to 15% bonus EXP. Pick your class for PvE first, because that’s where most of your time goes.

Are ArcheAge Chronicles classes gender locked?
Yes. Ham’s September 15 letter said the gender-locked system would stay in place for Early Access. The October 29 letter sets out the plan: gender selection is coming to character creation one class at a time, starting with the female Warrior in December, with the goal of no gender locks on any class by full release.
XLGAMES hasn’t published which gender each of the other three classes has. Players on the official Steam discussion board describe the Warrior and Berserker as the male classes and the Ranger and Mage as female. Treat that as player reports until the character creator goes live tonight. One more thing before you lock in: the Nov 2 server notice rules out character transfers and cross-server play, so make your first character on the server your group will use.

FAQ
What is the best class in ArcheAge Chronicles?
There’s no official ranking, and launch balance changed on October 29. Our pick for most players is the Warrior: it’s flexible solo and in groups, and it’s first in line for new content. Pick the Ranger for range, the Berserker for a group front line and the Mage for area damage.
How many classes are in ArcheAge Chronicles?
Four at launch: Warrior, Ranger, Berserker and Mage, with two weapons each (eight in total). Each class will get a third weapon, one class at a time, starting with the Warrior’s Gladius in December.
Is there a healer class in ArcheAge Chronicles?
Not among the four launch classes. None of XLGAMES’ class introductions describes a healing role, so plan for self-sustain such as healing potions (MeinMMO mentions cooking them in the demo) and Nui Tears, which raise max HP.
Can you change class or weapon later?
You can switch between your class’s two weapons in combat, and each weapon has its own trait tree. XLGAMES hasn’t announced a class change. With gender locks in place and no server transfers, a different class means a new character.
