Best Terraria 1.4.5 loadouts for melee, ranger, mage and summoner at every stage, from Starfury to Zenith, with armor, accessories and what 1.4.5.7 changed.

Terraria class setups come down to four damage types, melee, ranged, magic and summon, and the gear you stack on top of them at each stage of progression. The quick version: melee is the most survivable, rangers live on ammo and emblems, mages trade defense for homing and lifesteal, and summoners let minions and whips do the work. In 1.4.5 the best endgame picks are the Zenith, the S.D.M.G. or Phantasm, the Last Prism and the Stardust Dragon Staff. Every loadout below was checked on Oct 30, 2026 against the official Terraria Wiki’s class setups guide (last edited Oct 25) for version 1.4.5.7. Vanilla only; Calamity gets a short note at the end.

Quick answer: best Terraria class setups (1.4.5)

  • Melee: Starfury and Blade of Grass early, Night’s Edge before the Wall of Flesh, Terra Blade after Plantera, Zenith at the end. Armor: Molten, then Titanium or Adamantite, Turtle/Beetle, Solar Flare.
  • Ranger: Boomstick and Star Cannon early, Phoenix Blaster before Hardmode, Megashark and Chlorophyte Shotbow after the mechs, Tsunami and Eventide after Golem, S.D.M.G. or Phantasm at the end. Armor: Fossil, Necro, Frost, Shroomite, Vortex.
  • Mage: Demon Scythe for most of pre-Hardmode, Aqua Scepter before the Wall, Unholy Trident and Venom Staff after the mechs, Razorblade Typhoon and Arc Surge after Golem, Last Prism at the end. Armor: Jungle or Meteor, Spectre, Nebula.
  • Summoner: Cattiva or Foxparks and the Snapthorn early, Imp Staff before Skeletron, Blade Staff and Firecracker in early Hardmode, Terraprisma after Golem, Stardust Dragon Staff at the end. Armor: Flinx Fur Coat, Bee/Obsidian, Spider, Tiki, Stardust.
  • Every class: keep two free minions and two sentries running (Bewitching Table and War Table), even if you’re not a summoner. The wiki calls it essentially free damage.

How classes work in Terraria

Terraria has no class you pick at the start. Your class is whatever your weapons, armor and accessories boost. That’s why you can switch at any time, and why mixing is normal. Re-Logic’s Loki put it plainly on the official forums in May 2026: “Terraria isn’t an rpg where you pick your class at start and that’s it. One could argue that hybrid styles are actually best.” The wiki still recommends leaning into one class, because accessory slots are limited and most late-game armor boosts only one damage type.

Class Strengths Weaknesses
Melee Highest defense and the most health-regen bonuses Short-range weapons need tank builds late in the game
Ranged Strong single-target damage from range, flexible ammo Ammo costs money and crafting time; can’t shoot through blocks
Magic Homing, lifesteal and area damage; great crowd control Fragile, and weapons slow down when mana runs out
Summon Minions aim for you; whips buff minion damage Low-defense armor; whips pull minions onto whatever you hit last

Melee setup by progression stage

Melee gets the most defense. Close-range swords hit hard, but projectile-firing melee weapons become the better pick later on.

Stage Best weapons Armor Key accessories
Before any boss Starfury (Skyware Chests on Floating Islands), Blade of Grass, Ball O’ Hurt (Corruption Shadow Orbs) Platinum or Gladiator Feral Claws; Strung Counterweight and Pyroclastic Stone after the Goblin Army
Before Skeletron Volcano, Hive-Five, Flamarang Molten (Shadow or Crimson until then) Feral Claws, Pyroclastic Stone; Sharpening Station, Flask of Fire
Before the Wall of Flesh Night’s Edge (Light’s Bane or Blood Butcherer + Muramasa + Blade of Grass + Volcano), Sunfury Molten Same as above
Early Hardmode Bananarang (Clown, Blood Moon), Shadowflame Knife (Goblin Warlocks), Chain Guillotines or Fetid Baghnakhs (Mimics), Drippler Crippler Titanium or Adamantite Warrior Emblem, Berserker’s Glove, Yoyo Bag, Moon Charm
After the mechs True Excalibur, Chlorophyte Claymore, Death Sickle (Solar Eclipse Reapers), Yelets Hallowed or Turtle Mechanical Glove, Fire Gauntlet, Warrior Emblem
After Plantera Terra Blade (True Night’s Edge + True Excalibur + Broken Hero Sword), Vampire Knives Turtle or Hallowed Warrior Emblem, Fire Gauntlet
After Golem Flying Dragon (Betsy), Influx Waver (Martian Saucer), Terra Blade Beetle, or Valhalla Knight pieces Same, plus Magic Yoyo Bag for yoyos
Lunar Events Daybreak, Solar Eruption, Flying Dragon Keep your post-Golem set Keep your post-Golem set
Endgame Zenith, Meowmere, Star Wrath, Terrarian Solar Flare Warrior Emblem, Mechanical Glove, Fire Gauntlet

The Zenith is crafted at a Mythril or Orichalcum Anvil from the Terra Blade, Meowmere, Star Wrath, Influx Waver, The Horseman’s Blade, Seedler, Starfury, Bee Keeper, Enchanted Sword and a Copper Shortsword. In 1.4.5, throwing it into Shimmer turns it into the True Copper Shortsword. It works exactly the same, but every sword in the attack is a Copper Shortsword. Our Terraria boss order guide shows where each of those bosses and drops fits.

Ranger setup by progression stage

Ammo matters as much as the gun: Frostburn or Shimmer Arrows and Silver or Tungsten Bullets early, Ichor plus Venom Arrows and Crystal or Chlorophyte Bullets late.

Stage Best weapons Armor Key accessories
Before any boss Boomstick, Blood Rain Bow (Blood Moon fishing enemies), Musket or The Undertaker, Grenades Fossil (a Gi can replace the Fossil Plate) Poison Barb, Harpy Charm, Snapping Stone; Archery Potion
Before Skeletron Star Cannon (fires Fallen Stars), The Bee’s Knees (Queen Bee), Molten Fury Shadow or Crimson Sweet Barb, Harpy Charm
Before the Wall of Flesh Phoenix Blaster, Quad-Barrel Shotgun (Arms Dealer in a Graveyard), Hellwing Bow Necro Same as above
Early Hardmode Daedalus Stormbow (Hallowed Mimics), Dart Rifle, Coin Gun, Uzi (Angry Trappers) Frost or Adamantite Ranger Emblem, Phoenix Quiver, Chaos Cylinder
After the mechs Flamethrower (uses Gel), Chlorophyte Shotbow, Pulse Bow (Traveling Merchant), Megashark Chlorophyte or Hallowed Ranger Emblem, Phoenix Quiver
After Plantera Nail Gun, Piranha Gun, Venus Magnum, Sniper Rifle Shroomite Ranger Emblem, Chaos Cylinder
After Golem Tsunami (Duke Fishron), Eventide (Empress of Light), Aerial Bane (Betsy), Xenopopper, Snowman Cannon (Frost Moon) Shroomite Recon Scope, Sniper Scope, Chaos Cylinder
Lunar Events Phantasm, Vortex Beater Keep Shroomite Keep your post-Golem set
Endgame S.D.M.G. and Celebration Mk2 (Moon Lord), Phantasm Vortex Ranger Emblem, Phoenix Quiver, Recon Scope, Chaos Cylinder

Mage setup by progression stage

Mages are fragile, so the wiki splits armor into defensive and glass-cannon picks. Mana Crystals are permanent, so use them as early as you can. The 1.4.5.7 rework also made gem staves worth carrying: matching a gem staff with the same gem robe raises its damage, and the robe’s gem adds its own effect to the shots.

Stage Best weapons Armor Key accessories
Before any boss Demon Scythe (Underworld Demons), Thunder Zapper (Underground Desert chests), Mystic Bloom, gem staves Jungle (defensive) or Wizard Hat + Mystic Robe + Jungle Pants Band of Starpower, Nature’s Gift; Celestial Cuffs, Magnet Flower after the Goblin Army
Before Skeletron Demon Scythe, Gray Zapinator, Bee Gun, Space Gun Jungle or Meteor Celestial Cuffs, Mana Regeneration Band
Before the Wall of Flesh Aqua Scepter (Dungeon gold chests), Demon Scythe, Water Bolt, Flamelash Jungle or Meteor Celestial Cuffs, Magnet Flower, Restoration Shield
Early Hardmode Orange Zapinator (Traveling Merchant), Spirit Flame, Blood Thorn (Hemogoblin Sharks), Life Drain (Crimson Mimics) Adamantite Headgear + Breastplate + Forbidden Treads Sorcerer Emblem, Mana Cloak, Celestial Cuffs
After the mechs Unholy Trident (Red Devils), Venom Staff, Tome of Infinite Wisdom (Ogres, Old One’s Army), Magical Harp Hallowed or Chlorophyte Celestial Emblem, Sorcerer Emblem
After Plantera Leaf Blower (Plantera), Inferno Fork (Diabolists), Shadowbeam Staff (Necromancers), Wasp Gun Spectre Celestial Emblem, Mystic Arts Sash
After Golem Arc Surge (Martian Saucer), Razorblade Typhoon and Bubble Gun (Duke Fishron), Nightglow Spectre, or Spectre Mask + Spectre Robe + Dark Artist’s Leggings Celestial Emblem, Restoration Shield
Lunar Events Nebula Blaze, Nebula Arcanum, Arc Surge Dark Artist (offensive) Keep your post-Golem set
Endgame Last Prism and Lunar Flare (Moon Lord) Nebula Celestial Emblem, Celestial Cuffs, Sorcerer Emblem, Mana Cloak, Mystic Arts Sash

One Moon Lord tip from the wiki: Spectre armor’s lifesteal doesn’t work on the Moon Lord until its top eye is dead. That’s why Dark Artist armor, or a Valhalla Knight’s Breastplate for safety, is the better pick for that fight.

Summoner setup by progression stage

Summoners attack with minions and sentries, then use whips to point the minions at a target and boost their damage. The wiki’s tip: against bosses that spawn smaller enemies, target the boss directly and don’t use a whip. A whip pulls your minions onto whatever you hit last.

Stage Minions and sentries Whips Armor and accessories
Before any boss Cattiva or Foxparks (rescue a distressed Pal on the surface), Flinx Staff, Vampire Frog Staff, Finch Staff Snapthorn; Soulscourge (Corruption) or Vasculash (Crimson) Flinx Fur Coat, Feral Claws, Summoning Potion
Before Skeletron Imp Staff, Hornet Staff; Houndius Shootius (Deerclops) and Ballista Rod sentries Snapthorn, Starcrash Bee or Obsidian armor, Pygmy Necklace, War Table
Before the Wall of Flesh Imp Staff, Foxparks, Hornet Staff (or Mushroom Staff with Spinal Tap) Spinal Tap or Starcrash, plus Snapthorn for whip stacking Bee or Obsidian; Feral Claws, Silver Shield
Early Hardmode Blade Staff (Queen Slime), Sanguine Staff (Dreadnautiluses), Spider Staff, Ruinous Staff; Queen Spider Staff sentry Firecracker (Wall of Flesh) or Cool Whip Spider armor; Summoner Emblem, Twilight Grasp, Druidic Serpent Cloak, Wicked Claws
After the mechs Optic Staff, Trusty Cattiva or Trusty Foxparks, Blade Staff; Ballista Cane Durendal, Firecracker Hallowed or Chlorophyte (Squire for sentries); Avenger Emblem
After Plantera Deadly Sphere Staff, Staff of the Frost Hydra Firecracker, Durendal Tiki armor (Witch Doctor; set gives +4 minion slots); Hercules Beetle
After Golem Terraprisma, Xeno Staff (Martian Saucer), Blade Staff Kaleidoscope, Dark Harvest, Electric Eel, Firecracker Spooky (offensive) or Tiki; Papyrus Scarab, Necromantic Scroll, Ouroboros Ring
Lunar Events Stardust Dragon Staff, Terraprisma, Stardust Cell Staff Firecracker + Vulgar Display of Flower + Dark Harvest stack Keep your post-Golem set
Endgame Stardust Dragon Staff, Terraprisma; Lunar Portal Staff Possession, Constellation, Dark Harvest Stardust or Valhalla Knight armor; Papyrus Scarab, Necromantic Scroll, Pygmy Necklace

The Terraprisma is a guaranteed drop from the Empress of Light if every hit of the fight lands during the day. Cattiva and Foxparks are the Palworld crossover Pals added in 1.4.5. Since 1.4.5.7 you can craft them with a Kinship Peach into their Trusty versions, and the distressed-Pal event is 25% more common and guarantees the Pal you don’t have yet. If you also play Pocketpair’s game, our Palworld breeding combos guide covers the other side of the crossover.

Accessories worth using with any class

Survival Worm Scarf or Brain of Confusion, Band of Regeneration, Restoration Shield Frozen Shield, Star Veil, Mystic Arts Sash, Celestial Shell
Damage Stinger Necklace, Shark Tooth Necklace Destroyer Emblem, Avenger Emblem, Celestial Shell

What changed for class setups in 1.4.5 and 1.4.5.7

Bigger & Boulder (1.4.5) arrived on Jan 27, 2026. The 1.4.5.7 changelog followed on PC on Aug 19, 2026 with a heavy balance focus. According to Re-Logic’s notes, these changes matter most for loadouts:

  • Whip stacking: whips can now stack tag effects with the right accessories. You start with one tag slot. The wiki lists the Mobius Strip, Wicked Armlet and Silver Bracer (and their upgrades, such as the Ouroboros Ring) as giving extra slots, up to 4 in normal play.
  • Around 30 new class accessories, including the Poison Barb, Harpy Charm, Snapping Stone, Phoenix Quiver, Chaos Cylinder, Heavy Sling, Twilight Grasp, Ouroboros Ring, Restoration Shield and Mystic Arts Sash.
  • New weapons: the Daybloom Staff, Glacier Fang, Mystic Bloom, Arc Surge, Clay Bud Staff and Ruinous Staff.
  • Loadout sharing: favorite a piece of equipment to share it between your loadouts, which makes it cheaper to keep a second class set ready.

Loki describes the balance aim as “to bring classes more in line with each other in terms of fun and performance.” The next update is 1.4.6, Crossplay Phase One. Re-Logic’s October 2026 State of the Game says it’s in final testing and submission.

Calamity class setups (mod)

Calamity is a tModLoader mod, not part of vanilla Terraria. It adds a fifth class, Rogue, which uses a Stealth mechanic and thrown weapons, along with its own bosses and progression. The tables above don’t apply to it.

FAQ

What is the best class in Terraria?

There’s no single best class. Melee is the safest, because it gets the most defense and, as the wiki puts it, is arguably the only class built around health regeneration. Re-Logic’s Loki says hybrid styles may be strongest, and every class benefits from a couple of free minions.

What class should a beginner pick in Terraria?

Melee is the most forgiving choice. Its armor has the highest defense, and early melee weapons like the Starfury and Blade of Grass come from chests and crafting rather than boss drops. Summoner and mage are the most fragile, since most of their armor trades defense for damage.

Can you change class in Terraria?

Yes, at any time. A class is just the gear you wear. The wiki recommends switching if you find a strong off-class weapon that stays useful for a long time. Off-class weapons still work, they just don’t get your armor’s bonuses.
