There are 36 Ocarina of Time heart pieces in the Switch 2 remake, the same total as the 1998 original, and every four of them add one Heart Container to Link’s health. None are inside dungeons: they sit in the overworld or come from minigames and side quests. Some spots have changed, though, and two Hyrule Field pieces now hinge on the remake’s new Fairy Thoughts.
This list draws on the two full post-launch guides published on November 5, from Nintendo Life (Ollie Reynolds) and TheGamer (Collin MacGregor). Where they disagree, we say so. Checked November 6, 2026, 01:30 UTC, the day after the Ocarina of Time Switch 2 launch.
Table of Contents
Quick answer
- Total: 36 Pieces of Heart, which makes 9 extra Heart Containers. Add the boss containers and Nintendo Life puts Link’s maximum at 20 hearts.
- Most in one area: Kakariko Village and its graveyard hold 8 between them. Zora’s River has 4.
- Magic Beans: 5 pieces need a bean planted as Young Link and a ride on the plant as Adult Link: the graveyard, Lake Hylia, Death Mountain Trail, Death Mountain Crater and the Desert Colossus.
- Remake changes: the graveyard grave no longer needs the Sun’s Song, the old Cucco jump to the Zora’s River pillar doesn’t seem to work, and two Hyrule Field pieces use Fairy Thoughts.

Lon Lon Ranch and Lost Woods heart pieces
- #1 Lon Lon Ranch: in the stone storage tower at the back right of the ranch, pull the crates away from the bars and crawl through the gap to the piece.
- #2 Lost Woods, Skull Kid on the stump: go left from the Kokiri Forest entrance and play Saria’s Song to the Skull Kid sitting there.
- #3 Lost Woods, Skull Kid memory game: go right from the entrance, climb down to the two Skull Kids and repeat their tunes on your ocarina. Nintendo Life says the first round pays 5 Rupees, the second 20 and the third the heart piece. Our Ocarina of Time songs list has the Switch 2 buttons for every note.
Kakariko Village heart pieces
- #4 Impa’s house roof: accept Kaepora Gaebora’s ride down from the top of Death Mountain. He drops you on a roof in the village. Hop to the red roof next to it for the piece.
- #5 Windmill: after beating Dampé’s race and getting the Hookshot, you exit into the windmill. TheGamer says to ride the rotating platform over to the piece.
- #6 Potion Shop roof: leave through the Potion Shop’s back door, Hookshot onto the neighbouring roof and talk to the man sitting there.
- #7 Skulltula House: the reward for 50 Gold Skulltulas.
Kakariko Graveyard heart pieces
- #8 Under a grave: pull back the grave at the top right of the graveyard (TheGamer: the far-right one in the second row) and drop into the hole for a chest. Nintendo Life notes that the original needed the Sun’s Song here. The remake doesn’t.
- #9 Dampé’s gravedigging tour: at night, pay Dampé 10 Rupees per dig. TheGamer says the prize spot is random, so save first and reload if needed.
- #10 Magic Bean ledge: plant a bean in the soft soil on the left side as Young Link, then ride the plant up to the piece as Adult Link.
- #11 Dampé’s race, second run: once you have the Hookshot, race Dampé again and finish in under a minute. TheGamer credits the remake’s new sprint button and warns that one hit from his fire can end the run.
Zora’s River, Zora’s Domain and Zora’s Fountain heart pieces
- #12 The pillar halfway up the river: you need a Cucco to reach it. Nintendo Life says the original ledge-grab trick doesn’t seem to work in the remake. Its route is to climb the vine to the highest island, bomb the cracked hole on its south side, take the Cucco from inside and use it to reach the piece.
- #13 Near the Zora’s Domain entrance: carry the Cucco from the start of the river to the entrance, then glide back down to the piece’s platform.
- #14 Frogs, Song of Storms: play the Song of Storms to the frogs on the river.
- #15 Frogs, butterfly game: play Zelda’s Lullaby, Saria’s Song, Epona’s Song, Sun’s Song and the Song of Time to the frogs. Then press the button for whichever frog has a butterfly above it. TheGamer maps the frog colours to Switch 2 buttons: light blue is L, yellow is R, dark blue is Y, grey is X and red is A. You need to get through the whole game without mistakes.
- #16 Zora’s Domain torches: light a Deku Stick at the torch by King Zora’s throne, then light the five unlit torches on the way down. A chest with the piece appears.
- #17 Zora’s Fountain ice platforms: as Adult Link, jump across the frozen platforms in the north-east corner, on the way to the Ice Cavern.
- #18 Bottom of Zora’s Fountain: after the Ice Cavern, sink to the fountain floor with the Iron Boots. TheGamer adds the Zora Tunic, which lets you breathe underwater. The piece sits in a ring of Rupees.
Gerudo Valley and Lake Hylia heart pieces
- #19 Behind the waterfall: glide with the Cucco from near the bridge down to the river, then climb the stone stairs behind the big waterfall.
- #20 Chest on the cliff: take the Cucco to the left of the bridge and glide across to the ledge with the chest.
- #21 Fishing Pond: pay 30 Rupees (Nintendo Life) and land one of the biggest fish. Neither guide knows the exact size needed: Nintendo Life’s catch was 59cm, TheGamer’s 58cm or bigger. According to TheGamer, the Young Link record gives the heart piece and beating it again as Adult Link gives the Golden Scale.
- #22 Lakeside Laboratory roof: plant a Magic Bean next to the lab as Young Link and ride the plant as Adult Link. Nintendo Life says you can also reach the roof as an adult with the Scarecrow’s Song and the Hookshot.
- #23 Laboratory dive tank: with the Golden Scale, dive to the bottom of the lab’s pool. The Lake Scientist hands you the piece.

Death Mountain and Goron City heart pieces
- #24 Death Mountain Trail: plant a Magic Bean by the entrance to Dodongo’s Cavern, then ride the plant as Adult Link to the opening above it.
- #25 Goron City spinning vase: light the torches around the giant Goron-shaped vase on the bottom floor so it spins, then get a bomb into its top opening. TheGamer uses a Bomb Flower from the floor above, which means getting the Goron Bracelet first.
- #26 Crater bean plant: plant a Magic Bean in the soft soil by the Fire Temple entrance as Young Link, then ride it as Adult Link to the tall pillar. TheGamer’s route uses the Bolero of Fire to warp in as a child, with a bug in a bottle for the soil. The heat drains your health the whole time.
- #27 Crater ledge by the upper entrance: just inside the crater from the top of the mountain, climb down the net on the left to a ledge holding the piece. TheGamer gets it after Dodongo’s Cavern. Nintendo Life does it as Adult Link and lists the Hookshot and Goron Tunic. TheGamer advises going in at full health because the heat drains you fast, and says picking up the piece restores your health.
- #28 Business Scrub in the crater: as Young Link, find the Business Scrub on the lower level, stun him (with your shield per Nintendo Life, or a Deku Nut per TheGamer) and buy the piece for 100 Rupees. You’ll be back here for the Biggoron’s Sword trading sequence.
Hyrule Castle Market heart pieces
- #29 Richard the dog: at night, a woman near the market entrance has lost her dog, Richard. He is one of two white dogs in the back alley, so if the first one is wrong, bring back the other.
- #30 Treasure Chest Shop: at night, win five rooms of the chest game in a row. The Lens of Truth shows which chest holds each key.
- #31 Bombchu Bowling Alley: opens on the left side of the market once you have bombs (Nintendo Life says after Dodongo’s Cavern). The heart piece is one of the prizes, and TheGamer says you need to clear all three difficulty levels to unlock it.
Gerudo Fortress and Desert Colossus heart pieces
- #32 Top of the fortress: once you can roam the fortress, climb to the highest rooftops, play the Scarecrow’s Song at the gap and pull yourself across. Nintendo Life names the Hookshot. TheGamer names the Longshot. Then open the chest.
- #33 Horseback archery: ride Epona on the archery course and score at least 1,000 points. TheGamer’s tip: ten bullseyes at 100 points each gets you there.
- #34 Desert Colossus: plant a Magic Bean next to the Spirit Temple entrance as Young Link (TheGamer warps there with the Requiem of Spirit), then ride the plant around the desert as Adult Link until it drops you by the piece.
Hyrule Field heart pieces and Fairy Thoughts
Nintendo’s Japanese site describes “Fairy Thoughts” (妖精の想い) as glowing markings found across Hyrule that hold “special secrets”, which Navi reads for you. Both guides list two Hyrule Field heart pieces that use them:
- #35 Under the arch near Gerudo Valley: in the west of Hyrule Field, look for a small chest under the stone arch. As Adult Link, it’s already open and empty. Read the Fairy Thought nearby, then come back as Young Link, when the chest is still closed, and open it.
- #36 Business Scrub by the castle drawbridge: bomb the cracked ground to the right of the drawbridge. The Business Scrub below won’t sell without a password. As Adult Link, read the Fairy Thought on the tree opposite the hole, then return as Young Link and say the password. TheGamer gives it as “Sell somethin’, will ya?”. The piece costs 100 Rupees, according to Nintendo Life.

Ocarina of Time heart pieces in order: a suggested route
TheGamer orders its list by when each piece becomes available. Roughly:
- Early game: Lon Lon Ranch, the two Lost Woods Skull Kid pieces, Dampé’s gravedigging, the graveyard grave.
- After the Goron Bracelet and Dodongo’s Cavern: the Goron City vase, the two crater pieces near the entrance, then the owl drop onto the Impa’s house roof.
- Once you have bombs: Bombchu Bowling, Richard the dog, the Gerudo Valley pair, the Fishing Pond, the Zora’s River and Zora’s Domain pieces.
- Mid-game, once you can travel through time: the graveyard, Lake Hylia and Death Mountain bean plants, the windmill, Dampé’s second race, the Potion Shop roof, the laboratory dive, the Gold Skulltula reward and both frog pieces (TheGamer returns to the past for those after learning the Song of Storms).
- Late game: both Hyrule Field Fairy Thought pieces, the two Zora’s Fountain pieces, the Treasure Chest Shop, the Gerudo Fortress pair and the Desert Colossus bean.
Plant Magic Beans early. Nintendo Life says the bean seller sits at the Zora’s River entrance, and buying them all at once takes a lot of Rupees. With more hearts, the timed boss rematches in the Hall of Fallen Foes get easier.
FAQ
How many heart pieces are in Ocarina of Time?
There are 36 in both the remake and the original, according to Zelda Wiki and both post-launch guides. Every four pieces form one Heart Container, so the full set adds 9 hearts.
Are there heart pieces in dungeons?
No. Nintendo Life says none are in the main dungeons, unlike Gold Skulltulas. Dungeons give full Heart Containers when you beat their bosses.
Do heart pieces in the remake match the N64 version?
Mostly. TheGamer says several are in brand-new locations. The changes reported so far are the Sun’s Song no longer being needed at the graveyard, a new route to the Zora’s River pillar, and the two Fairy Thought pieces in Hyrule Field. If you’re planning your playtime, our guide to how long the Ocarina of Time remake is has the playtime estimates from reviews, and our Ocarina of Time Switch 2 review scores roundup has the critic verdicts.
