Lightyear Frontier 1.0 came out on November 4, 2026 on Steam and Xbox, and it changes how the early game plays. Automation now starts at Milestone 4, mech tools level up along fixed upgrade paths, and the HUD shows you what a crop rotation will give before you plant. These Lightyear Frontier tips are our own suggestions for what to do first, built on FRAME BREAK’s 1.0 patch notes and Frontier News posts.
FRAME BREAK and Coffee Stain Publishing list the game at $29.99 / €29.99 / £23.49. On Steam it is 20% off ($23.99) until November 12 (store page checked November 5, 2026 UTC).

Quick answer: Lightyear Frontier tips for 1.0
- Upgrade the Seed Shooter first. At Mk. 2 it gets Lock-On, which plants many mounds at once. At Mk. 4 it gets Seed Stacking for bigger yields.
- Get the other tools to Mk. 2. In 1.0, every tool gets its secondary ability at Mk. 2 (Spike Saw Sweep, Harvest Vortex, Hydro Splash, Sprout Volley). You no longer need a mod chip for it.
- Plan for automation at Milestone 4. Automation Pipes now pull straight from storage, and one crafting construct can loop up to 3 recipes.
- There are no sprinklers. Watering runs on Watering Drone Stations fed by Water Pumps, Water Reservoirs and rain.
- Rotate crop types (Nitrogenic, Potassic, Phosphoric) and use the new HUD preview. In 1.0, mutated harvests always give normal crops as well.
- Clay comes from stone: grind Stone into Sand, then craft Sand into Clay. You need 12 Clay for a Furnace.
- Co-op is 1-4 players. Use a Shared Save so any friend can host, and let the strongest PC host.
What changed in Lightyear Frontier 1.0 (and should you start a new save?)
The 1.0 launch post adds two late-game areas, the Sandswept Highlands and the Hollow Marsh, which make the world about 40% bigger. It also adds Milestones 13 and 14, the story ending and new neighbor missions for Diane and Ulf. Deliveries were merged and rebalanced, so fewer of them are needed overall, and the Delivery Cannon menu now lets you queue several deliveries and launch them all at once. To start the ending missions, every colony must reach “Thriving”.
Old saves keep working. Even so, the official 1.0 FAQ says a new save gives “a more natural and better-flowing overall experience”. Our tip: start a new save if you are below the mid-game, because the reordered milestones now bring automation and neighbors in much earlier. The new areas are open from the start. FRAME BREAK says they are built for experienced players, though, with late-game resources and extra-tough Floaters, so leave them for later.
Each new save also asks you to pick a difficulty preset (from the 1.0 quality-of-life post):
| Preset | What it does |
|---|---|
| Creative | Building and crafting cost nothing; no damage, no threats |
| Relaxed | No damage taken; longer days |
| Balanced | The standard game; recommended for new players |
| Challenging | More damage, items lost for good on knockout, scarcer fuel |
Best early mech upgrades in Lightyear Frontier
In 1.0 you no longer craft new versions of tools and parts. Each tool, part and transform mode now has its own slot and an upgrade path, gets better base stats with every level, and costs no Power. The mech customization post says there are fewer mod slots overall but each mod chip is stronger. So the Power you have now goes to mods, and an upgrade does more than it used to. The left and right arms are now one part (Mech Arms), and so are the legs. The Windshield and Engine became one Mech Body.

FRAME BREAK’s farming and tools post lists when each tool gets its secondary ability:
| Tool | Unlocks at | Ability | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seed Shooter | Mk. 2 | Lock-On | Targets many mounds at once |
| Seed Shooter | Mk. 4 | Seed Stacking | Several seeds in one mound for a yield bonus |
| Spike Saw | Mk. 2 | Sweep | Hits several objects at once; now swings back and forth |
| Vacuum Harvester | Mk. 2 | Harvest Vortex | Pulls crops straight out of the ground |
| Irrigation Hose | Mk. 2 | Hydro Splash | Charges up to water a rectangular area |
| Sprout Cannon | Mk. 2 | Sprout Volley | Plants several sprouts in an area |
Our upgrade order:
- Seed Shooter Mk. 2, then Mk. 4. Deliveries drive progress, and crops are what you deliver. Lock-On saves the most time early on, and Seed Stacking multiplies every field you already have.
- Spike Saw Mk. 2. Sweep speeds up wood and stone gathering. The new Weak Points that appear when you hit something give a 25% damage bonus, so aim for them.
- Vacuum Harvester Mk. 2 and Irrigation Hose Mk. 2. Harvesting and watering by hand are the next bottlenecks until drones take over.
- Legs when you start hauling. According to the patch notes, leg upgrades make the mech steadier and less likely to fall over.
Fuel matters less than it used to. Running out no longer switches off your mod chips; you just get a stat penalty that grows over time. The new Eco Driving coziness buff cuts mech fuel use by 20%. Late in the game, the Seed Shooter’s Minigun mod and the Hover Thrusters engine mod are built for seeding very large fields.
Lightyear Frontier automation: pipes, storage and multi-recipe crafting
The 1.0 automation post moves the first automation content to Milestone 4 and removes the Automator. Its job now belongs to Automation Pipes:
- Pipes pull from storage. Storage Box II, Silo, Silo II, Small Shed and Storage Shed now have outputs, so a pipe can feed a crafting construct straight from storage. Hover over a construct in the Build Menu to see its inputs and outputs.
- Pipes cost Energy, which replaces the Automator’s connection limit. Keep an eye on your energy balance as your network grows.
- Resource Filters on each storage construct can Accept or Deny any item or whole category, including items you haven’t found yet. Set one box to accept everything and it works as the dump chest players have been asking for.
- Up to 3 recipes can loop in one crafting construct. If the resources for one recipe run out, the construct skips it and moves to the next.

Our layout tip: build storage-to-crafter chains under a roof. FRAME BREAK changed the roof check for the crafting efficiency bonus in 1.0: it now looks straight up from the center and the four corners of each construct. If an old setup lost its bonus, check the roof first. Since the Automation Update (March 2026), Energized crafting constructs work 2.5x faster, and 1.0 raised the Energy output of every generator. So it pays to add one more generator before you add another crafter.
Sprinklers and watering in Lightyear Frontier
The game has no sprinklers. Watering is automated with Watering Drone Stations. Water Pumps move water from rivers, lakes or the ocean through pipes into drone stations and water troughs, a Water Reservoir stores large amounts, and rain refills drone stations too. In 1.0, the Drone Station II waters a smaller 1×2 area but works faster to make up for it, and there is a new Drone Station III.
Harvesters
For harvesting, use the Vacuum Harvester’s Harvest Vortex. The patch notes say it now almost always pulls in everything caught in its suction, as long as you keep holding the button. Width upgrades for the Harvester tractor mode now reach the full 25 segments (before 1.0 they stopped at 20). Once you have width mods, you can change the width while driving, which helps with odd-shaped fields.
Lightyear Frontier crop rotation explained
Every crop and every mound has one of three types: Nitrogenic, Potassic or Phosphoric. The community-run Lightyear Frontier Wiki (on Fandom, last updated before 1.0) explains how it works. When a crop finishes growing, the mound takes on that crop’s type. What you plant there next then grows as a regular, high-yield or mutated crop:
| Mound type | Nitrogenic crop | Potassic crop | Phosphoric crop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nitrogenic | Regular | High Yield | Mutated |
| Potassic | Mutated | Regular | High Yield |
| Phosphoric | High Yield | Mutated | Regular |
So the high-yield loop is Nitrogenic → Potassic → Phosphoric → Nitrogenic, and the mutated loop runs the other way (Nitrogenic → Phosphoric → Potassic). The wiki lists Wheat, Chromaize and Zappertwig as Nitrogenic; Polyberry, Caroot and Honeybottle as Potassic; and Rabbage and Lumbloom as Phosphoric. 1.0 adds four new crops (Cloudbud, Coilvine, Papristalk and Quartznip), so check their types in-game.

1.0 makes rotation easier in three ways. The HUD previews what planting will give before you plant. Harvesting a mutated crop now always gives normal crops too. And fertilizer now comes in two kinds: Mulch (the old fertilizers, which change a mound’s type) and new Fertilizers from later milestones, which raise a mound’s yield without changing its type. Both are made from new Powder items, which you get from animal droppings or wood. The Compost Box is now called the Fertilizer Infuser and has a tier II. Our tip: use Mulch to fix a mound’s type, then use Fertilizer and Seed Stacking for yield.
How to get clay and other resources
According to the community wiki, you make Sand by grinding Stone in the Grinder (2 Sand per Stone), then craft Clay from Sand (1 Sand per Clay). The Furnace costs 12 Clay and 12 Wood, and you need it for glass and metal bars. Clay also goes into the Well, all the brick building pieces and the plant pots. Our tip: set up a Grinder early and keep a stack of Stone on hand, because a Furnace and a few brick pieces use up clay fast.
Resource changes in 1.0 that help you early on (from the patch notes):
| Change | Before | 1.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Wood per log (all log types) | 4 | 6 |
| Glo Tree fruits per cycle | 2 | 15 |
| Inventory and storage capacity | 1x | 10x (crops take about 1/10 the space) |
| Large Trees drop | Hardwood | Regular Wood logs |
| Happy Farm Animal daily drops | 1 | 3 |
| Content Farm Animal daily drops | 50% chance of 1 | 1 guaranteed |
The new Resource Scanner in the Map menu points you toward resources you can’t find. Colorflowers now grow in fewer places but in bigger clusters. Colonies also drop care packages with valuable resources at random spots around the world. Farm animals are easier to keep, too: Content now needs 2 needs met (was 3) and Happy needs 4 (was 5). Petting a happy animal drops its resource right away, once a day.
Lightyear Frontier co-op tips
The Steam page lists the game for 1-4 players, with online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. For a group, use Shared Saves (added in the Greater Cause Update). Anyone with access can host, so the farm keeps going when the creator is offline. You can have up to 10 Shared Saves. Only one person can host at a time and only 4 can play together, but more than 4 people can have access to the save. You can also copy a save between Standard and Shared.
- Pick the host’s settings up front. In 1.0, day length, growth time and other playstyle settings are per world and controlled by the host.
- Let the most powerful PC host. FRAME BREAK recommends it, and warns that hardware at or below Xbox Series level may not hold 60 FPS when hosting 3-4 players on a late-game save.
- Split the jobs (our tip): one player farms and runs deliveries, one gathers stone and wood, one builds the automation lines. Prometheus Station’s Research Deliveries no longer need other players, so solo players can earn those mod blueprints too.
