GTA 6 brings back a six-star wanted level, but the stars are no longer the whole story. Police only come after you once a witness reports the crime or an alarm goes off, and a new “heat” system remembers what they know about you: your clothes, your car, your weapon, whether CCTV caught you and whether you were seen as a couple. To lose them, you make yourself harder to recognise.
Rockstar hasn’t published a guide to the GTA 6 wanted system. This page collects what its own footage and developers have shown, plus the three previews Rockstar allowed: IGN’s interview with Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson (August 27), the official Extended Look video (August 27) and Edge magazine’s cover feature (October 29). Each detail says where it comes from. Leaked footage is left out. Checked October 31, 2026.

Quick answer: the GTA 6 wanted system
- Six stars are back. The Extended Look shows Jason and Lucia at four stars with room for two more. GTA 5 stopped at five (Shacknews, Eurogamer).
- Witnesses matter. A crime is only reported if someone sees it or an alarm goes off, Nelson told IGN.
- Heat is what police know. Icons at the top of the screen show your description, outfit, partner, CCTV and weapon. Edge calls it “the contents of the police report you are trying to outrun”.
- How to lose the cops: change clothes, swap cars or go on foot into a crowd, split Jason and Lucia up, drop the weapon, or hide long enough.
- Police tactics seen so far: helicopters with searchlights, stinger strips, SUVs and a K9 unit whose dog pinned Jason to the ground (Edge, Shacknews).
- Not the Criminal Profile. The wanted level is what police know right now. The GTA 6 Criminal Profile is a separate long-term record of how you play.
How the GTA 6 wanted system works
Nelson set out the basic rule in IGN’s preview: a crime only gets reported if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off (Inven Global’s summary of IGN’s full transcript). Eurogamer, which pulled details from IGN’s preview and the Extended Look, says the same thing. Police don’t appear out of nowhere. Someone has to call it in.
Edge’s feature adds that the game doesn’t punish every slip. Pedestrians notice whether a shotgun is slung on your back or held in your hands. Crowds back away, and some people challenge you. Still, “the game allows a degree of latitude before behaviour crosses the threshold into a wanted level”. Dropping the weapon is one way to calm things down. Edge says the aim is to show “how information travels organically through the world”, not to bring the full force of the law down on every minor offence.
Once the wanted level starts, the old six-star ladder applies. Shacknews spotted it in the Extended Look’s police chase: four stars brought cop cars, SUVs and helicopters, with two empty stars still above them. Rockstar hasn’t shown what five or six stars bring.
Nelson also explained why GTA 6 feels less safe for the player. “I think in previous GTA games you were a bit all-powerful,” he told IGN, via PC Gamer. “Apart from the police, everyone would run in terror from you if you started acting out. This world in GTA 6 is not like that.”

GTA 6 heat system: what the police know about you
This is the biggest change from GTA 5. According to Edge, a “heat” system tracks the information police have gathered. Each detail appears as an icon at the top of the screen, under the stars. “Escape is no longer merely a matter of waiting for stars to evaporate,” Edge writes, “but a process of making yourself progressively less recognisable.”
| What police know | How to shake it | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Your physical description | Make yourself less recognisable; Rockstar hasn’t detailed how hair or masks count | Edge |
| What you’re wearing | Change clothes; buying a new outfit removes heat | Edge; Nelson via IGN transcript |
| Whether you were a pair | Split Jason and Lucia up if witnesses saw two people | Edge; Eurogamer; Insider Gaming |
| The car you’re driving | Swap vehicles, or go on foot into a busy area | Eurogamer; Nelson via IGN transcript |
| CCTV footage of you | Not explained yet | Edge |
| The weapon you carried | Drop it | Edge |
Two details from IGN’s full transcript make the system easier to work with. Your personal vehicle, which you can call at any time, stores spare outfits as well as every weapon you’ve bought. And a Focus mode, which Nelson compared to Eagle Eye in Red Dead Redemption 2, highlights things like nearby cops (Inven Global’s summary).
Police chatter backs the system up. GamingBolt, crediting Eurogamer, says officers in the Extended Look read out suspect descriptions over the radio, including clothes, car and companions. Insider Gaming sums up IGN’s preview the same way: if you’re seen committing a crime, police may get a description of you, your vehicle, your clothing and whether you’re moving as a couple.
Does GTA 6 have a vehicle description?
Yes. Eurogamer lists “the car you’re driving” as part of the suspect description, and Nelson told IGN that switching cars helps throw the police off. GamingBolt says the Extended Look shows the player losing part of a wanted level by hiding long enough and switching to a different vehicle.
Stolen cars bring their own risks. Edge says a newer, expensive car may have a tracker that keeps broadcasting your position, and that stealing almost any car risks the owner reporting it. According to IGN’s transcript, a phone scanner shows whether a car is locked, has an alarm or carries a tracker, and cars with an advanced tracker have to be driven fast or they ping their location to the police. The WAINK theft-to-order app and the rest of the car systems are in our GTA 6 vehicles list.
GTA 6 police tactics: stinger strips, helicopters and K9 units
Edge watched Nelson play for 90 minutes, and one police chase shows how the pieces fit. After a botched robbery, Jason and Lucia flee on a stolen motorcycle. You can hand the driving to one and shoot as the other. Up ahead, officers radio each other and lay a stinger strip across the road, “almost invisible when driving at speed at night”. Nelson misses it, the front tyre blows and the couple are thrown over the handlebars. They limp away, and a K9 unit joins the chase. In Edge’s words, the dog “closes the gap almost immediately and pins Jason to the ground”.
Edge also describes the “warm beam of a helicopter searchlight” you try to avoid while slipping through back alleys and abandoning cars. Its summary of the design: previous GTAs made the player feel “almost godlike”, while GTA 6 “deliberately makes criminality feel precarious”.

Getting caught still ends the familiar way. According to IGN’s transcript, an arrest brings up the “Busted” screen and a respawn.
How to lose the cops in GTA 6
Based on what Rockstar and the previews have described so far, this is the order that makes sense when you’re spotted:
- Don’t get reported. No witness and no alarm means no police response, according to Nelson.
- Break the description. Drop the weapon, split Jason and Lucia up if you were seen together, and change clothes. Your car holds spare outfits.
- Lose the car. Swap vehicles, or head on foot into a busy area. Watch for trackers on anything new and expensive.
- Get out of sight. Stay away from helicopter searchlights and hide long enough for the stars to drop, as shown in the Extended Look.
- Watch the road at night. Stinger strips are hard to see at speed, and a K9 unit can run you down on foot.
These steps come from preview descriptions, not hands-on play, and Rockstar hasn’t said how long heat takes to fade on its own. We’ll update this guide with real numbers after launch.
Wanted level vs Criminal Profile
They’re separate systems. The wanted level and heat cover what the police know right now. The Criminal Profile is a long-term record of how violently Jason and Lucia commit their crimes, and Rockstar told Edge it will influence how their story unfolds. A clean getaway keeps you out of trouble on both. Nelson’s rule of thumb, as quoted by Eurogamer: commit a crime and move on “before the cops get there”, without escalating, and “you’re generally going to be fine”. The levels, the shattered state and what counts against you are in our Criminal Profile guide, and the other systems from the previews are in our GTA 6 features list.
The Extended Look is on Rockstar’s YouTube channel:
What Rockstar hasn’t confirmed
- Five and six stars: Rockstar hasn’t shown either level, so what they bring (in older games, the military) is unknown.
- Heat timers: how long each piece of heat lasts if you do nothing.
- CCTV: whether you can destroy cameras or wipe footage. Push Square’s editor suggested it might be possible, but no preview confirms it.
- Masks and bribes: no source we could read quotes Rockstar on whether masks hide your identity or whether witnesses can be paid off, as in Red Dead Redemption 2.
- The K9 dog: whether you can fight it off. Edge only reports the office urging Nelson not to shoot it.
Leaked footage and datamined HUD details are not covered here. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Our GTA 6 release time and pre-load guide has the unlock hour in each region, and Edge’s other findings on Leonida’s crowds are in our GTA 6 map size and NPCs report.
FAQ
How many wanted stars does GTA 6 have?
Six. The Extended Look shows a four-star chase with two more stars on the meter, a return to the six-star system GTA 5 dropped.
Do the police know your vehicle in GTA 6?
Yes. The suspect description can include the car you’re driving, so swapping vehicles or going on foot helps you escape. Cars with trackers can also report your location.
Does GTA 6 have K9 units?
Yes. Edge saw a K9 unit join a chase, and the dog pinned Jason to the ground. Rockstar hasn’t said at which wanted level dogs appear.
Can you change clothes to lose the cops in GTA 6?
Yes. Your outfit is part of the heat system, and Nelson told IGN that buying a new outfit removes heat. Your personal vehicle carries spare outfits.
Do witnesses report crimes in GTA 6?
Yes, and that’s how police find out. According to Nelson, a crime only gets reported if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off.
