To become a movie director in BitLife, you need the Movie Director Expansion Pack. It is a paid add-on, sold separately in the BitLife Marketplace, and it launched on September 10, 2026. Once you own it, players report that directing works as an activity, not as a job in the Occupation menu. Each film runs the same loop: pick a script, split the budget, cast actors, handle problems on set, then release the film and collect reviews and awards.
This guide covers how to unlock it, how the budget and casting work, and which choices make sense when you’re starting out. It’s based on Candywriter’s own announcement, launch video and screenshots, the App Store listing, and dated player reports from September and October 2026. Everything was checked on November 1, 2026, against BitLife 3.26, the current iOS version, released October 22, 2026. Candywriter hasn’t published a formula for how a film succeeds. Anything below that comes from players is labelled that way.

Quick answer
- Unlock: buy the Movie Director Expansion Pack in the BitLife Marketplace. Boss Mode, Bitizenship and the Job Pack don’t include it for most accounts. Older “Legacy Bitizen” accounts got access after a fix on September 21, 2026.
- Where it is: players say it’s under Activities, not under Occupation or Special Careers. If it’s missing, update the app and restart it.
- Requirements: Candywriter’s own screenshots show an 18-year-old with no job using the Movie Director menu. No official source lists a degree, an acting career or a minimum fame level.
- Budget: Candywriter says you split your money across effects, cast, crew and marketing. Players say the casting budget is the tight part, and actors often turn down offers.
- Best choices: pick a script with a long Script Quality bar. Plan the casting budget for every role before you make your first offer. Rehire actors who worked out. Avoid back-to-back flops: Candywriter’s own line is “one flop won’t end you… but two might.”
Is the BitLife movie director pack free?
No. Candywriter’s launch post (September 10, 2026) says the pack “is available now in the BitLife marketplace.” Version 3.24.7, released the same day on the App Store, announced it in its notes. It’s an Expansion Pack, which is a different product line from the old Job Pack.
That difference caused the biggest complaint of the launch. Dozens of App Store reviews from September 10-21 say that owning Boss Mode, God Mode, Bitizenship or the Job Pack didn’t unlock Movie Director, even though those purchases had covered earlier job packs. One reviewer wrote on September 12 that Candywriter support told them the old “all future content” benefit only applies to Bitizens from before March 2020. On September 21, @BitLifeApp posted that “Legacy Bitizen” accounts “should have access” from that day after a fix. If you bought Bitizenship early and still see a price, try Restore Purchases first.
The pack’s price isn’t in the App Store’s public list of top in-app purchases. On November 1, 2026, that list showed the Landlord, Investor and C.U.L.T. Expansion Packs at $7.99 each, Boss Mode at $20.99 and Bitizenship at $9.99 (US). Players quote anywhere from about $4 to $8 for Movie Director in their reviews, so check the price in the Marketplace before you buy.

How to become a movie director in BitLife (step by step)
- Update BitLife. The pack arrived in version 3.24.7. The current iOS version is 3.26 (October 22, 2026), and Google Play shows an update on October 20, 2026.
- Buy the pack in the Marketplace, or restore it if you already own it.
- Open Activities. Reviewers point out that Candywriter “made it an activity” (a “premium activity”, in another review), and one buyer couldn’t find it under jobs. If the option is missing, a fan guide on Ezechax suggests closing the app completely and reopening your life.
- Be an adult. Candywriter’s promotional screenshots use an 18-year-old who just finished secondary school, with “Independently Wealthy” as her status and $1,000,000 in the bank. That’s the clearest official hint that you don’t need a film career first. No source gives a lower age limit.
- Choose a script from the Movie Director list. You can’t write a film from scratch: one reviewer complained on September 23 that you can’t name or create your own movie.
You don’t need to act first, but you can combine the two careers for roleplay. Our older guide to becoming an actor in BitLife covers the acting side, which comes from the Actor job pack.
The BitLife movie director pipeline, stage by stage
Candywriter’s launch video description (September 10, 2026) calls it “a full filmmaking pipeline from pitch to premiere.” The official screenshots and player reports fill in what each stage looks like.
| Stage | What Candywriter says or shows | What players report |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Pitch and greenlight | “Write your script and survive the studio room.” Scripts are listed with a genre and a Script Quality bar. There are 11 genres, including musical, fantasy, western, horror, thriller and historical. | Scripts are pre-set. One reviewer says the better scripts sit behind ads. |
| 2. Budget allocation | “Split your money across effects, cast, crew, and marketing and live with the consequences.” | The overall budget can be large while the casting part stays small. |
| 3. Casting | Audition cards show the actor’s age, background, past work, and Acting and Fame bars, with “Offer her the role” or “Keep looking”. A “Talent Rolodex” keeps the stars you discover. | You can see 3 random actors for free or watch an ad to use a casting agent. You get one offer per actor, with no negotiation. |
| 4. On set | “On Set Chaos”: events such as a lead’s Creative Vision request, answered with Let them do it, Only in a few scenes or Refuse. You can “hire or fire anyone at any time.” | None of the sources documents what each answer changes. |
| 5. Release | Reviews, box office, award premieres and festivals. | Pantha’s video thumbnail (September 26) shows a theatrical re-release earning a $2,183,784 box office. |
| 6. Reputation | “One flop won’t end you… but two might.” | One reviewer says their “director reception” didn’t rise even after a good film (September 11). |

BitLife movie director budget: how to split it
Candywriter names four buckets: effects, cast, crew and marketing. It hasn’t published how each bucket affects reviews or box office. No reliable guide has a tested “best split” either, so don’t trust any page that gives exact percentages as fact. Here’s what the dated reports agree on:
- Casting is the bottleneck. A September 22 App Store review describes a $6.3 million casting budget. The player offered the lead actress $3.5 million, then $4 million, $4.5 million and $5 million, and was rejected every time, with three co-stars still to hire. Another review (September 18) says the free actors almost never accept unless you offer more than half the casting budget. An October 26 review says the budget “rarely allows good actors but has lots of money for all that other stuff.”
- Offers are one shot. Reviewers on September 11 and September 20 both say you can’t negotiate after your first offer. A rejection sends you back through the menu to pick someone else.
- More money isn’t a guaranteed hit. A fan guide on Ezechax (updated October 7, 2026) says players report big overall budgets paired with small casting budgets. It quotes one case of an $8 million casting budget against four actors who each wanted at least $10 million. It also says no published formula ties budget to success.
A practical split, based on those reports rather than an official rule: count the roles first (the September 22 player had to fill four). Decide the most you’ll pay the lead, leaving enough for the others, and fill smaller roles with lower-Fame actors whose Acting bar is still decent. Only use the casting-agent ad if the three free actors all fall short.
Best choices for your first movies
These are suggestions built from what the game shows you. Candywriter hasn’t confirmed them as rules.
- Script: pick the longest Script Quality bar you can get. It’s the only quality measure the script list shows. In Candywriter’s own screenshot, two near-identical horror titles, “Crimson Cheek” and “Crimson Cheeks”, have very different bars. The weaker one later earns a Worst Director nomination in the Award Season screenshot.
- Auditions: look at both bars. Acting is about the performance, and Fame is about star power. Candywriter’s example audition is a 49-year-old drama actress with a low Acting bar who “screamed every word.” On a card like that, Keep looking is the obvious answer.
- Rehire who worked: Candywriter’s September 24 post lists “rehire your favorite cast” as a core move. The Talent Rolodex keeps the stars you’ve worked with, although one reviewer notes that calling a contact doesn’t show their stats. Write down who was good.
- Creative Vision events: no source says what Let them do it, Only in a few scenes or Refuse changes. A cautious approach is to weigh the actor’s Acting bar: Candywriter’s example pairs a “made-up language” idea with a very low Acting bar.
- Festivals: Candywriter says showing films at festivals helps “build your reputation.” Pantha’s September 26 video thumbnail shows a Best Director award at a festival paying a $50,000 reward.
- Protect your reputation: after a flop, make a safer film next. Candywriter’s own warning is that two flops might end your career.

Bad films get joke nominations too; Candywriter's own checklist adds festivals, dating an actor and rehiring your cast. Image: Candywriter
Movie director awards, dating and other extras
Candywriter’s Movie Director page and its September 24 post on X list the extras: date an actor, direct a blockbuster, show a film at a festival, win a Bitcademy Award and rehire your favorite cast. The launch video adds that you can romance your leading talent, “then find out what that costs you.” Awards come as pop-ups. The official Award Season screen offers “Attend the ceremony” or “Stay home”, and bad films can be nominated for the joke awards too.

FAQ
Why is movie director not showing up in BitLife?
Check three things. You need version 3.24.7 or newer (3.26 on iOS now). You need the pack bought or restored. And you need to look under Activities, not Occupation. A fan guide on Ezechax says it sometimes appears only after a full restart. Legacy Bitizen accounts that were missing it should have had access since the September 21, 2026 fix.
Do you need a film degree to be a director in BitLife?
No official source says so. Candywriter’s own screenshots show an 18-year-old with no job directing films, and the launch notes list no education requirement.
How do you get actors to accept your offer?
There’s no confirmed rule. Players report that free-pool actors often reject offers worth well over half the casting budget, and that you can’t negotiate. Budget for every role first, try actors with lower Fame, or use the casting-agent option.
Is the movie director pack worth it?
Most App Store reviews since launch are critical. They complain about pre-set scripts, strict casting budgets and ads. What the pack adds is the loop Candywriter advertises: scripts, casting, drama on set, festivals and awards. If you already enjoy BitLife’s fame careers, that’s a new way to play. If you’re hoping for a full studio simulator, players say it’s more limited than that.
