All 8 AION 2 classes explained: roles, weapons, strengths and weaknesses, plus the best class for beginners, solo play, groups and PvP based on community data.

AION 2 has eight classes in its global version: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric and Chanter. Two can tank, two can heal and the rest deal damage. If you only want the short version: new players and solo players are best served by the Gladiator or the Spiritmaster, and groups always need the Templar, Cleric and Chanter.

The question matters right now because AION 2 is the number one game on Steam’s top sellers chart this week, and plenty of players are rolling their first character. This guide explains what each class does, compares them side by side, and summarizes what the available data says about which one to pick. The rankings below come from community and data-site sources, credited throughout; they are not our own play results.

Key takeaways

  • 8 classes, 4 roles: Gladiator and Templar can tank, Cleric and Chanter can heal, and Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer and Spiritmaster are damage only.
  • Same base stats for everyone: every class has 35 skills (12 active, 10 passive, 13 Stigma) and an identical stat growth table, so the differences come from skills and weapons.
  • Best for beginners: Gladiator (self-healing melee with a simple rotation). Best solo: Spiritmaster (its spirits tank and heal for it).
  • Best for groups: Cleric, Chanter and Templar, the only classes with real party-wide tools.
  • Best PvP duelists: Assassin and Sorcerer, thanks to the deepest crowd-control kits.
  • No class is locked out: each class holds between 9.9% and 14.8% of the top 1,000 characters by Combat Power.

What AION 2 is and how classes work

AION 2 is NC’s free-to-play MMORPG built on Unreal Engine 5, with flight and aerial combat at the center of the design. It launched in South Korea and Taiwan in November 2025 and went live globally on Steam and NC’s PURPLE launcher on October 5, 2026, after five days of advance access for Founder’s Pack buyers, Inven Global reports. Steam alone peaked at 397,905 concurrent players on launch day, and Steam’s own player count API still showed roughly 216,000 players online on the morning of October 15.

Your class is fixed when you create a character, so it is the biggest decision you make. Three facts make it a little less stressful:

  • Faction doesn’t limit you. Elyos and Asmodians share all eight classes; your faction only changes your look, starting zone and which side you fight for.
  • Base stats are identical. According to MetaBot’s class data, read from the global game client, HP, Defense and attack growth are the same for every class. What differs is the weapon, the range and the numbers inside each skill.
  • Customization is shared. Every class gets five Daevanion boards (unlocking between levels 12 and 45) and Stigma slots that open at levels 22, 27, 32 and 37.

Every class also gets Defiance at level 16, a skill that removes Stun, Knockdown, Airborne, Grab, Frost and Fear and grants 5 seconds of immunity. So the PvP differences come from everything else in each kit.

All AION 2 classes at a glance

The table combines the weapon and role tags from the game client with the kit-based tier placements published by MetaBot’s AION 2 tier list, which scores every class from its skills (crowd control, range, healing, party buffs, cooldowns) and checks the result against more than 145,000 tracked level 45 characters.

Class Weapon Role Group PvE PvP Solo / beginner
Gladiator Greatsword Tank / Damage A A S
Templar Longsword (with shield) Tank S A A
Assassin Daggers Damage B S B
Ranger Bow Damage A A A
Sorcerer Spellbook Damage A S A
Spiritmaster Orb Damage B A S
Cleric Mace Healer S B B
Chanter Staff Healer / Damage S B A

Read the tiers as trade-offs, not verdicts. MetaBot itself calls them editorial, and they change with balance patches rather than popularity.

Tank classes: Gladiator and Templar

Gladiator

The Gladiator is a greatsword frontliner tagged as both Tank and Damage. Its key strength is sustain: Blood Absorption restores HP on hit and recovers 26% of Max HP when you drop below half health, and ten of its attacks can hit up to four enemies. Wrath Wave knocks down up to four enemies, and Blade Toss (20 m range) cuts a target’s Defense by 30% and the healing it receives by 50%, which makes it useful in PvP too.

Trade-off: it is melee only and brings little party utility beyond a small damage boost when it blocks. Pick it if you are new to MMOs, want to solo comfortably, and like the option of off-tanking later.

Templar

The Templar is the only class the client tags purely as a Tank. It has nine hard crowd-control skills, including two pulls, a Taunt that works on players, and Nezekan’s Shield, which shields every party member within 40 m for 41% of their Max HP. Comrade in Arms lets it share a party member’s incoming damage.

Trade-off: damage is modest, so solo play is slower, and you will be asked to tank. Pick it if you want guaranteed group invites and enjoy leading fights from the front.

Damage classes: Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster

Class Range Main strength Main weakness
Assassin Melee Single-target burst, stealth, 9 hard CC skills Fewest multi-target attacks (7); needs back attacks
Ranger 20 m (16 of 25 skills) Safe ranged uptime, 4-target stun No party utility
Sorcerer 20 m (19 skills) 11 multi-target attacks, the only Polymorph Fragile: no Max HP passive
Spiritmaster 20 m (21 skills) Spirits hold aggro and heal you No party-wide skills; damage over time

Assassin

Dual daggers, stealth and burst. The Assassin builds Insignia stacks (Savage Fang applies all five at once) and cashes them in with Insignia Explosion. Shadow Walk gives 20 seconds of out-of-combat stealth, and Triniel’s Dagger hits 30% harder from behind while lengthening the target’s cooldowns. It is MetaBot’s top PvP pick, but the weakest group-PvE kit because it has the fewest multi-target attacks. Pick it if you want to duel players and don’t mind positioning.

Ranger

The Ranger fights almost entirely from 20 m; only Ambush Kick needs you within 5 m. Arrow Storm stuns up to four targets, Deadshot is a charged shot, and Drill Dart applies a bleed that cuts healing received by 60%. Nothing in the kit is hard to execute, which is why it rates A tier across the board. Pick it if you want range without managing pets.

Sorcerer

The Sorcerer has the most varied crowd control in the game, including Root, Frost, Seal, Airborne and the only Polymorph, Curse: Tree, which turns a player into a tree for 10 seconds. Hellfire is a three-stage charged nuke on up to four targets, and Hibernation grants 5 seconds of damage immunity. MetaBot rates it the best overall DPS class because it deals top damage from range. The cost is survivability: it is one of only two classes without a Max HP passive. NC’s October 13/14 patch notes also fixed Fire Wall and Cold Storm not applying bonus damage when fighting across a difference in elevation.

Spiritmaster

Called the Elementalist in some Korean and Taiwanese English guides, the Spiritmaster lets its spirits do the frontline work. Summon: Earth Spirit pulls aggro off you, the Wind Spirit and Spirit Communion heal you, and 21 skills reach 20 m. That makes it the best solo class in MetaBot’s ranking. Its damage leans on damage over time, and it has no party-wide skills, which keeps it at B tier for group content. The same October patch fixed Ancient Spirit summons at level 15 or below not using their skills properly.

Healer classes: Cleric and Chanter

Cleric

The only pure healer. The Cleric has five healing skills, including Healing Light on a 6-second cooldown that targets the lowest-HP party member, plus Summon Resurrection from up to 40 m. Light of Protection gives the party 10.5% PvE damage and damage tolerance, and its Stigma Voice of Doom cuts enemy healing and potion recovery by 60%. Trade-off: low damage (MetaBot rates it two stars out of five), so solo play is slow, and it has only two hard CC skills. Pick it if you want to be the player every party is looking for.

Chanter

The Chanter is the game’s hybrid: a staff user tagged as both Healer and Damage, fighting at melee and mid range. It carries seven party-wide skills, including a party heal, a party shield, Power of the Storm (faster combat speed and 10% shorter party cooldowns) and Barrier Spell, which stops the whole party’s HP from dropping below 10% for 3 seconds. Pick it if you want to support a group and still deal damage.

One party-building note from MetaBot: the Cleric’s Light of Protection and the Chanter’s Undefeated Mantra are the same 10.5% buff and don’t stack, so in a party with both, one of them should use that Stigma slot for something else.

Which AION 2 class is the best?

It depends on what you plan to do. Based on the sources above:

If you want… Pick Runner-up
The easiest start Gladiator Ranger
To play mostly solo Spiritmaster Gladiator
To tank Templar Gladiator (off-tank)
To heal Cleric Chanter
Ranged damage Sorcerer Ranger
Melee damage Gladiator (groups), Assassin (bosses, PvP) –
PvP duels Assassin Sorcerer

What high-level players actually play

MetaBot’s armory snapshot from October 6, 2026 shows how evenly the classes are spread. Across all 145,000+ tracked level 45 characters, every class sits between 12.3% and 13.3%. Among the 1,000 highest Combat Power characters, the split is:

Class Share of top 1,000
Sorcerer 14.8%
Assassin 14.1%
Gladiator 13.7%
Chanter 12.9%
Spiritmaster 12.3%
Ranger 12.2%
Templar 10.1%
Cleric 9.9%

Combat Power rewards damage stats, so tanks and healers trailing here doesn’t make them weaker. It does show that no class is shut out of the top end.

The Korean server picture

Korea has played AION 2 for almost a year, and its population looks different. According to aion2tool figures cited by Guild Order (520,228 characters, September 6, 2026), the Ranger was the most played class at 19.77%, followed by the Cleric at 18.31%, while the Templar sat at just 8.70%. The practical takeaway for global players: if Korea is any guide, tanks are the role in short supply, so a Templar or Gladiator rarely waits long for a group. The Korean version also has a ninth class, the Brawler, which is not in the global client.

Is a class rebalance coming?

NC’s global patch notes so far (October 6/7 and October 13/14) contain bug fixes for the Spiritmaster and Sorcerer but no number changes to any class. The Korean version, live since November 2025, is already further along with a nine-class roster and its own update history, so expect the global tiers to move as balance patches arrive. Since every class has the same base stats, a balance patch is unlikely to turn any class from viable to unplayable.

If you are coming from other class-based games, our Diablo 4 best classes guide and Windwalker Monk class guide for World of Warcraft follow the same idea: pick by role first, then by playstyle.

FAQ

How many classes are in AION 2?

Eight in the global version: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster, Cleric and Chanter. The Korean version also has the Brawler.

What is the best AION 2 class for beginners?

The Gladiator. It heals itself on every hit, hits several enemies at once and has a simple melee rotation. The Ranger is the best ranged alternative.

What is the best solo class in AION 2?

The Spiritmaster, because its Earth Spirit holds enemy attention and its Wind Spirit heals you, so most fights end before anything reaches you.

Which AION 2 classes can heal?

The Cleric (pure healer) and the Chanter (healer and damage hybrid).

Is the Spiritmaster the same as the Elementalist?

Yes. The global client calls the class Spiritmaster; Elementalist is the name some Korean and Taiwanese English guides use.
