Recently in an interview with Wccftech Chief Technical Officer of 4A Games (Developers behind the Metro series), Oleksandr Shyshkovtsov was asked about the potential downside of having to support a lower min spec with the Xbox Series S. He responded with, “The RAM is not an issue for us (currently), but GPU performance presents challenges for future titles. Our current renderer is designed for high spatial and temporal resolution (read: 4K @ 60 fps). It is stochastic by nature. Dropping any of those would require us to do more expensive calculations, dropping performance even further. We have a compromise solution right now, but I am not satisfied with it yet.”
So basically, what he is trying to say is that the RAM of Xbox Series S is not an issue for 4A Games, at least for now, but the GPU Performance is already presenting challenges for upcoming 4A Games titles. To make games work on Xbox Series S, they will have to make multiple compromises, which could be Graphical compromises or resolution compromises. This is not great news for those who bought Xbox Series S for a complete next-gen experience since game developers might end up making a lot of compromises for their games to run on Xbox Series S, and you will not be able to experience their games properly. I was always against the idea of Xbox Series S because all the developers that want their game on Xbox Series X will also have to make their game run on Series S, so it kind of abolishes “The Most Powerful Console” thing.
