Township Building Materials: How to Get Them + Full List

Cartoon steam train with cars of bricks, glass panes and stone slabs arriving beside a scaffolded town building
Written by Nora

Trains are the main source of glass, bricks and slabs in Township. Here are the other legit sources, plus what all 96 community buildings need.

Township building materials (glass, bricks and slabs) come mainly from trains: load the rail cars with goods and each train brings back a random material or tool. Playrix’s own help center lists the other sources as chests (mine, friends’ towns, island ships, full planes), the daily sea chest from level 29, the House of Luck, Regatta rewards, Market offers and Township Cash. From level 60, new community buildings also need drills, electric saws and jackhammers, and you can only get those at the Tool Exchange.

This guide covers one question: how to get building materials faster, and how many each community building and expansion needs. The full table of all 96 community buildings is further down. Facts were checked on October 31, 2026 against the Playrix help center and the community-run Township Wiki. Township is on version 40.0.0 on the App Store (October 28, 2026).

Quick answer

  • Glass, bricks and slabs build community buildings and zoo enclosures. Trains are the main source.
  • Shovels, axes and saws clear land expansions. They come from the same places: trains, chests, the House of Luck, the Regatta and the Market.
  • Hammers, nails and paint upgrade the barn. Playrix also lists them under building materials, but the barn is where you spend them.
  • Drills and electric saws (level 60) and jackhammers (level 62) come only from the Tool Exchange, where you trade glass, bricks and slabs for them.
  • Fastest legit routine: keep all three trains running, upgrade train lines at the Academy of Industry, open the free daily balloon and sea chest, and finish one community building at a time.

Township building materials list: what each one is for

The Township Wiki counts 12 construction materials. The table groups them by what they build. The T-cash prices are the wiki’s figures from its 2023 Construction Materials page. Check the price in your own game before you pay, because Playrix can change it.

Material Used for When you start needing it Where it comes from T-cash price (wiki, 2023)
Glass, bricks, slabs Community buildings, zoo enclosures Level 5 Trains, planes, chests, House of Luck, Regatta, Market 8 each
Shovel Town expansions Expansion 20 Trains, planes, chests, House of Luck, Regatta, Market 12
Axe Town expansions Expansion 34 Same as above 12
Saw Town expansions Expansion 50 Same as above 12
Paint, nails, hammers Barn upgrades Level 5 Same as above 12 each
Drill, electric saw Community buildings from level 60 Level 60 Tool Exchange only 50 each
Jackhammer Community buildings from level 62 Level 62 Tool Exchange only 50

Playrix’s help center confirms that you clear expansions with saws, shovels and axes, and that you upgrade the barn with hammers, nails and paint. It also confirms that drills and chainsaws (level 60) and jackhammers (level 62) “can only be obtained at the Tool Exchange in exchange for construction materials”.

How to get bricks, glass and slabs fast

Every source below is on Playrix’s official list or the wiki’s Train page. None of them changes how often a material drops, and Playrix publishes no drop rates. What you can control is how many rolls you get each day.

1. Keep every train moving (the main source)

  • You get your first train at level 5. The wiki lists the second at level 14 for 1,000 coins and the third at level 25 for 14,000 coins. Buy both as soon as you can, because more trains means more material rolls.
  • Loading rail cars gives XP but no coins. The reward is what the train brings back: building materials, barn materials, expansion tools or mining tools.
  • Upgrade the train lines at the Academy of Industry (unlocks at level 22, paid in ingots). According to the wiki’s upgrade table, an unupgraded train takes 4h15m to 5h. At train level 21, travel time is 50% shorter, about 2h7m to 2h30m. That doubles the material deliveries from the same three trains. The wiki suggests keeping all three lines at similar levels so they come back together.
  • From level 7 you can ask friends or your team to fill one rail car per train. Load Coupons from events also fill a car.
  • The Shortcut lab booster makes trains arrive twice as fast for one day. It comes free from events or for tokens at the Yacht Club, according to Playrix’s Laboratory booster list.

2. Steer the train “algorithm” (community tips, not official)

Playrix only says that each train “delivers randomly selected materials” and that some appear more often than others because they have different values. Players have three habits they believe tilt the odds. The wiki itself labels them “an assumption or observation”:

  • Finish one community building or zoo enclosure at a time. The wiki’s Train and Construction Materials pages say that leaving several unfinished buildings can bring you materials you don’t need yet.
  • Sell the surplus down to one below what you need. The wiki gives this example: with 70 glass, 20 bricks and 20 slabs, and a building that needs 40 of each, sell glass down to 39 so trains favour bricks and slabs. Don’t sell barn materials this way, since they are rarer.
  • Keep trains running even when nothing is being built. A December 2025 post on the fan blog Township Hub says trains then often bring slabs and bricks. It’s unverified, but sending a train costs you nothing anyway.

3. Open every free chest and balloon

  • Daily sea chest: from level 29, after you restore the Port, a daily chest appears near the islands (Playrix).
  • Ships with ingots: a ship sent without an ingot “will never bring back a chest”. The more valuable the ingot, the better the chance of one (Playrix’s Port and ships FAQ).
  • Planes: fully loaded planes give a chest reward. You have 15 hours to load, and you must send the plane yourself before the timer ends or you lose the reward (Playrix’s Airport FAQ).
  • Mine chests and friends’ towns: both are on Playrix’s list. The wiki adds that the first hot air balloon each day is free and later ones cost 3 T-cash.

4. Regatta, events, the House of Luck and the Market

  • The weekly Regatta and town events reward materials and tools. In the Regatta, you need to complete at least one task to get any reward, according to Playrix.
  • The House of Luck and the City Market both sell or award materials. Playrix says the Market “sometimes” offers tools and materials at a discount.
  • Township Cash buys any missing piece. The wiki calls it the expensive route, and suggests spending T-cash to speed up a train (up to 9 T-cash) instead of buying materials one by one.

Avoid “free T-cash” or material generators and sellers. They’re scams. Playrix warns that third-party offers for in-game resources are “likely an attempt to gain access to your personal data and credit card information” and break its Terms of Use.

Tool Exchange: drills, electric saws and jackhammers (level 60+)

From the Planetarium onward, every new community building needs two of the three “electro” tools as well as one regular material. Playrix’s Tool Exchange FAQ says the building opens at level 60, that you trade construction materials for tools, and that “the number of tools and requested materials is generated randomly”. The wiki adds these numbers:

  • It costs 12,000 coins and needs 7,100 population.
  • It has three offer slots: the first is free, the second costs 8,000 coins and the third 15,000 coins.
  • Each offer gives up to 4 tools, and one tool costs roughly 4 to 6 construction materials. Trades cost no coins.
  • If you dump an offer, a new one appears after 1 hour, or sooner if you pay T-cash.
  • Jackhammers don’t appear before level 62, so dumping offers to get one earlier is wasted effort.

The wiki’s advice is to never trade away glass, bricks or slabs that the next community building needs, and to collect tools about two levels ahead of time.

Township community building materials: the full list

Community buildings raise your population cap, and houses then fill it. That’s how Playrix’s population FAQ puts it: “First expand the cap with community buildings, then grow your population by building houses.” The table below lists all 96 community buildings with their unlock level, the cap they add, their coin cost and the materials needed to finish them. It comes from the Township Wiki (page last edited October 10, 2026; the Coworking Space, the 96th building, arrived in v39.0.0 on September 15, 2026). Version 40.0.0 adds a new town building, the Barista School. The wiki hadn’t listed its materials when we checked, so it isn’t in the table.

138 Coworking Space +4,440 768,000 236 bricks, 100 drills, 98 electric saws

Two patterns stand out in the table. Up to level 59, each building needs a mix of all three materials, rising from 1 brick for the Grocery Store to 93 in total for the Auto Repair Shop. From level 60, each building needs a large amount of one material plus two kinds of tools. So it pays to read the next building’s row before you trade at the Tool Exchange.

What town expansions need

Playrix says almost every game update adds new expansions, and that new plots can be anywhere on your town map. According to the wiki, each plot costs coins, needs a minimum population and, after the first 19, also needs tools. Shovels start at expansion 20, axes at 34 and saws at 50. The table shows sample rows from the wiki’s expansion table, which covers 349 plots. That page was last edited in April 2025, so newer plots aren’t on it.

Expansion Population needed Shovels Axes Saws Coins
1 60 0 0 0 25
20 430 1 0 0 280
34 850 2 1 0 550
50 1,450 3 2 1 1,100
100 4,280 6 4 3 6,900
150 7,900 8 7 5 18,000
200 11,900 12 10 9 35,400
250 15,900 15 14 12 59,000
300 19,900 18 17 16 88,900
349 23,820 22 20 19 120,750

Because every plot has a population requirement, expansions depend on community buildings too. Short on shovels, axes or saws? They come from the same trains, chests, House of Luck and Regatta as glass, bricks and slabs, and Playrix also lists the Market and Township Cash.

Barn upgrades: hammers, nails and paint

To upgrade the barn, tap Upgrade at the bottom of the Barn screen and hand in the hammers, nails and paint it asks for, or buy the missing ones with Township Cash (Playrix’s barn FAQ). A bigger barn matters here because unused materials sit in it too. The Spacious Barn lab booster adds 20% capacity for 2 days, and the Town Pass perk adds 30% while the pass event lasts.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to get building materials in Township?

Run all three trains nonstop and upgrade the train lines at the Academy of Industry. According to the wiki, train level 21 halves travel time to about 2 to 2.5 hours. On top of that, open the free daily balloon and sea chest, send ships with ingots so they can bring chests, and fully load planes.

Why do my trains keep bringing glass instead of bricks or slabs?

Playrix says train materials are random and that some appear more often than others. Players report better luck when only one community building is unfinished and when surplus materials are sold down to just below what the building needs. Neither tip is confirmed by Playrix.

Where do I get drills, electric saws and jackhammers?

Only at the Tool Exchange, which opens at level 60. You trade glass, bricks and slabs for them. Jackhammers become available at level 62. Trains never bring these tools.

How many community buildings are there in Township?

The Township Wiki lists 96, from the Grocery Store (level 5) to the Coworking Space (level 138, added in v39.0.0). Version 40.0.0 adds the Barista School as a new town building.

Are Township material or T-cash generators real?

No. They’re scams. Playrix says the only safe way to buy resources is in the app itself, and that third-party sellers are likely after your personal and card details.
