Build a TheoTown airport in order: 12-tile runway, tower, entry, gates, taxiway. Plus the landmarks and awards with the most culture, and why culture matters.

A working TheoTown airport needs four built pieces, in this order: a runway at least 12 tiles long on flat ground, a control tower, an entry (the terminal building) and at least one gate, joined to the runway by a taxiway. Then you tap the tower, add a lane and assign a plane to it. Culture is a separate map influence. You raise it with landmarks, culture awards such as the Old Dutch Windmill, opera buildings and culture plugins. Since version 1.11.01 it has also decided whether your residential zones get demand for level 3 buildings.

This guide covers both topics because players usually hit them at the same stage: a mid-sized city that has stopped growing and has money to spend. The airport facts come from the TheoTown wiki entries on the official forum, the developer’s changelog and forum help threads. The culture numbers come from a community screenshot of the in-game build menu. Everything was checked on October 29, 2026, against version 1.12.97 (App Store, October 28). For the basics of zoning, money and growth, start with our complete TheoTown strategy guide.

Quick answer

  • Airport build order: runway, then control tower, then entry, then gates, then a taxiway from the gates to the runway. The tower unlocks the entry, and the entry unlocks the gates.
  • Runway rule: at least 12 tiles long on flat terrain. Shorter runways don’t work.
  • First flight: tap the tower, add a lane, tap the lane, add a plane.
  • Don’t paint the airport zone first. It’s placed automatically around airport buildings, and painting it by hand can block your runway and roads.
  • Budget: the wiki prices one of each piece at about 2.8 million Theons. A 2022 guide put the simplest airport at about 4.2 million. Check your build menu for today’s prices.
  • Culture: the biggest vanilla sources are the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben (80 culture each), then the Eiffel Tower and the Old Dutch Windmill (60 each). Landmarks cost diamonds on mobile.
  • Why culture matters: since update 1.11.01 (June 2023), culture adds a happiness value and drives demand for level 3 residential buildings.

How to build an airport in TheoTown

Each airport piece has a job, and the wiki entries on the official TheoTown forum list what each one requires:

  1. Flatten a long strip of land. Longtime forum member CommanderABab points out that airports have to be flat, so level the ground with the terrain tools before you start. Leave room beside the runway for the tower, terminal and taxiway.
  2. Build the runway. It has to be at least 12 tiles long. Players describe the tool like this: tap a starting tile, then use one of the green guide lines to set the length and direction.
  3. Build the control tower. It needs power and water. Without it you can’t create lanes or assign planes, and it unlocks the entry.
  4. Build an entry. This is the terminal building. It needs a road next to it, plus power and water. Entries are rotation-aware, so turn them to face your road.
  5. Build one or more gates. Gates need a road connection, power and water. Neighbouring gates join up into one larger terminal.
  6. Connect the gates to the runway with a taxiway. Gates send out follow-me cars, and those cars have to reach the aircraft. The wiki warns that without them a plane will wait a long time before it takes off.
  7. Start flights. Tap the tower, add a lane, tap the lane and add a plane, the sequence TouchTapPlay’s airport guide describes.

Why your TheoTown runway won’t build

The most common problem is the airport zone. A new player asked about it on the forum in April 2026, and an experienced player gave a clear answer: delete the zone you painted and build the tower, terminal and runway directly. The airport zone is placed under (or around) airport buildings automatically, at 100 Theons a tile, and a hand-painted zone gets in the way of the runway and your roads. The other usual causes are uneven ground and a runway shorter than 12 tiles.

TheoTown airport costs and requirements

These figures come from the TheoTown wiki entries, written in December 2017. Later updates have changed airport balance (version 1.9.55 raised airport income, for example), so treat the prices as a guide and check the build menu.

Piece Listed price Monthly cost Needs Unlocks or does
Runway 10,000 Theons None 12+ tiles, flat ground Where planes land and take off
Control tower 1,000,000 Theons None Power, water Lanes and planes; unlocks the entry
Entry (terminal) 800,000 Theons 200 Theons Tower, road, power, water Unlocks gates
Gate 1,000,000 Theons 200 Theons Entry, road, power, water Sends out follow-me cars; gates join into one terminal
Taxiway 100 Theons per tile None Connects gates to the runway Lets follow-me cars reach the planes
Airport zone 100 Theons per tile None Placed automatically Required under airport buildings; adds the fence

One of each piece comes to roughly 2.81 million Theons plus the taxiway. TouchTapPlay put the simplest airport at about 4.2 million Theons in 2022, so prices have probably gone up since 2017. The wiki lists 8 plane types in the base game.

Is a TheoTown airport worth it?

For a mid-game city with savings, yes. Players on the forum report that more runways and a bigger airport bring in more money. TouchTapPlay suggests the same thing from the other direction: don’t spend your last Theons on the airport. Grow the economy first, then build bigger. Recent updates also make airports easier to manage:

  • 1.12.26 (September 2025): simple statistics in the airport view.
  • 1.12.30 (October 2025): airport-bound traffic, so the airport now pulls cars onto your roads. Give it a wide road or a direct link to the highway.
  • 1.12.85 and 1.12.86 (September 2026): tapping anywhere in the airport zone opens the airport information, which now has default actions for lanes.

For terminal and access layouts, a July 2026 forum write-up on modern airports recommends a loop road past parking and the terminal entrance, plus a bus stop or train station that leads straight into the terminal.

What is culture in TheoTown?

Culture is one of the influences a building can spread over the tiles around it. The game’s official scripting docs list it as its own influence type, next to education, health and the others. You can see your coverage in the culture view, one of the map overlays. Red areas have little or no culture.

It became important in version 1.11.01 (June 21, 2023), which added the opera feature and “culture happiness and culture effect (leads to level 3 residential demand)”. Low culture holds back your top-level residential growth. One player on the forum reported overall happiness stuck below 80% with culture at 50%, even though most other happiness values were above 80%. Later patches increased the culture range of opera buildings (1.12.11, January 2025) and allowed parks to carry culture influence (1.12.31, October 2025).

Best TheoTown buildings for culture

In a 2024 forum thread on raising culture, a player posted build-menu captures of the vanilla buildings that carry culture. The number in brackets is the culture influence shown next to each building’s name:

Building Where to find it Culture influence
Statue of Liberty Landmarks 80
Big Ben Landmarks 80
Eiffel Tower Landmarks 60
Old Dutch Windmill Public > Awards 60
Arc de Triomphe Landmarks 40
Brandenburg Gate Landmarks 40
St Basil’s Cathedral Landmarks 30
Leaning Tower of Pisa Landmarks 30
Sydney Opera House Landmarks 30
Angel of Independence Landmarks 30
Serene Symphony Park Public > Awards 10
Operatic Oasis Public > Awards Has culture (value not shown)

The captures date from October 2023, so values may have changed in later updates. Tap a building in the build menu to see its current influence. The Japanese TheoTown wiki (TheoTown攻略 on wikiwiki.jp) also lists a small culture influence for the Space Command building.

How to raise culture fast

  1. Open the culture view first. Find the red residential areas and fix those, not the areas that are already covered.
  2. Put one high-value landmark in the middle of each dense district. Influence spreads over the surrounding tiles, so a central spot covers the most homes. On mobile, landmarks cost diamonds, so save them for an 80-point option such as Big Ben or the Statue of Liberty.
  3. Fill gaps with awards and opera buildings. Look under Public > Awards. The Old Dutch Windmill is the strongest of the award buildings listed above.
  4. Use plugins if you play with them. The plugin store has a religion and culture section, and some landmark plugins (players mention the Budapest castle) carry culture influence.
  5. Check demand afterwards. Once a district is covered, watch the residential demand bar for level 3 growth.

FAQ

How long does a runway have to be in TheoTown?

At least 12 tiles, on flat ground. Shorter runways don’t work, and the runway needs level terrain.

Why won’t my TheoTown planes take off?

Usually the follow-me cars can’t reach them. Connect your gates to the runway with a taxiway, and check that every gate has a road, power and water.

Do I need to place the airport zone myself?

No. The airport zone is placed automatically under airport buildings. Painting it first can block your runway and roads, so delete it and build the tower, terminal and runway directly.

How do I increase culture in TheoTown?

Build landmarks and culture award buildings near dense residential areas, add opera buildings or culture plugins, and use the culture view to find the red spots. In the community list above, Big Ben and the Statue of Liberty give the most culture.

What does culture do in TheoTown?

Since version 1.11.01 it counts toward happiness and creates demand for level 3 residential buildings. A city with poor culture coverage has a hard time growing its top-level homes.
