It seems that 2022 is the big year of acquisitions. First, Activision-Blizzard’s acquisition by Microsoft, and now, Square Enix has sold off quite a few of its assets to the Swedish holding company Embracer Group to the tune of $300 million dollars. “A few” is a bit of an understatement, since, as a result of the agreement between Square Enix and Embracer Group, many popular game series have now fallen under a new owner. Square Enix Montreal, Crystal Dynamics, and Eidos have been acquired among other assets, and as a result of the acquisition, long-running series like Thief, Tomb Raider, Hitman and Deus Ex are now under Embracer Group. Recently, Square Enix has been developing new entries for Tomb Raider along with other brand new AAA titles for the next generation of consoles.
With this acquisition, there is a hope that some older titles like Thief and Legacy of Kain, which have not seen titles in many years, will finally return with new games. The new, upcoming Perfect Dark title is among those that have been acquired, and development is reported to still be underway amidst the previously reported development troubles the game has so far apparently suffered. Amidst all of this, the biggest acquisition by far is that of the legendary Gex. All hail the king. The transaction is set to finish up in July-September of 2022.
